In the midst of what, for our family was a truly troubling time, I hired Michael to represent my sister to fight a serious felony charge, that if convicted would impact her life forever, specifically diminish her relationship with her 8 month old baby because of jail time and end her career that she ...has worked so hard for. I will also share with you all who read this that even after delivering the news to me last night by phone, Michael shared with me his personal advice as to what he thinks should happen next outside of his representation. When his daughter Jean died Mark Twain wrote, “Possibly I know now what the soldier feels when a bullet crashes through his heart.” Sadly, as a parent I too can now relate. Late last year I received a call from a police officer friend who told me that my son had rear ended a stopped police car, i...njuring a police Sergeant in the police car and critically injuring his girlfriend who was the passenger in my son’s car. She was trapped inside of the vehicle and while it was on fire she was carried out of the driver’s side. The firey car crash was clearly captured on police dash cam video, my son’s blood was taken and it turned out that he was very intoxicated at the time. Not knowing what to do I turned to a trusted attorney friend who strongly recommended me to Mike Haber. I called Mike and the very next morning he and I met, and then together we went to the hospital to see my son. Mike interviewed my son with a surprising amount of knowledge and empathy. He understood our shock, emotions and also the immediate need to address the underlying issue of alcohol abuse. To simultaneously help my son with both his substance abuse and psychological and emotional issues (and as it turned out it was also a strategic tool for the case) Mike recommended inpatient treatment immediately after discharge from the hospital at a dual diagnosis facility. He explained that my son would spend 3 months inpatient, then step down to a halfway house and finally would come home and participate in intensive outpatient treatment. By structuring a plan to help my son on both personal and professional levels it was apparent that Mike genuinely cared about my son’s interests both outside and inside of the courtroom. But Mike’s strategy didn’t end there. As the case progressed we brought on experts to help build a defense (a forensic toxicologist for blood evidence issues, an accident reconstructionist for crash evidence and a forensic psychologist for mitigation). I honestly wasn’t sure why Mike insisted on all of this but I quickly found out the why of it. The State Attorney had no empathy at all for my son. Because of my son’s high blood alcohol content, the injury to the police Sergeant and the severe injury to my son’s girlfriend they refused to offer anything less than nearly 6 years in prison, and this is when the fight started in court. Mike and his partner started filing motions and set our experts loose to challenge the State’s evidence, and then I finally understood that our experts - the team that had Mike created - were really important to the motions that Mike was filing. Because of Mike’s strategy and his relentless efforts, after 8 grueling months my son was able to avoid a trial and a possible 7 year prison sentence by agreeing to serve 364 days in jail. Mike’s efforts got the State to make this offer, and now that it’s all said and done I honestly believe that Mike Haber saved my son’s life. I don’t wish it upon anyone but if at some future time you have one of Twain’s “bullet in the heart” life experiences that leaves you in a legal conundrum then let me pass on the recommendation that worked so well for my family: Call Mike Haber. (I should also mention that Mike always - ALWAYS - responded to our calls, texts, emails, etc., even when he was out of the country on vacation with his family.)

People usually get stressed and confused very easily. Between the costs of defense and dragging out cases for their own personal wealth and the lingo no-one but officers of the court understand puts a bad taste in people's mouths when the hear the word attorney. Never in my worst nightmares would I consider that I would need criminal representation. I was lost in a system I was unfamiliar with. I just hired Michael Haber to assist me with a serious legal issue. Ever since I was arrested this past week, I've been reeling mentally and emotionally.
