also known as Matt Smith
Matthew Smith was born and raised in Florida. He is a double Gator, earning both a bachelor’s degree in engineering (with honors) and law degree from the University of Florida.
Upon graduating law school, Matt entered active-duty service as a judge advocate (JAG) in the United States Marine Corps. During approximately ten years on active-duty, Matthew completed assignments in Okinawa, Japan, southern California, and at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, VA. During this time, Matt gained significant litigation experience as a criminal defense attorney where he represented numerous military clients facing serious allegations for complex felonies like manslaughter, sexual assault, domestic abuse, assault, and grand larceny. Matt left active-duty service in 2017 but continues to serve as a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves.
Prior to joining Morgan & Morgan, Matt gained civil litigation experience working for a boutique law firm in the Tampa Bay area, where he focused primarily on catastrophic personal injury and insurance bad faith cases in state and federal courts. In 2021 and 2022, Matt received peer recognition as a Best-Lawyer – Personal Injury Litigation (Plaintiffs).
Matt joined Morgan & Morgan so that he could continue to put his litigation skills to work for people who have been injured.

Even though Matthew is no longer practicing military law he still took around half an hour to recommend several attorneys and ensure that I understood the situation for clearing up an NCIC report. I can't imagine how hard this man would fight for you in the court room!

I met Matt when I was enlisted in the Marine Special Operations unit known as Marine Raiders. I had served 8 years at this time from 2004 - 2012 all with either Marine Recon or the Raiders with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Our paths crossed when I found myself in civilian trouble for...

Matt did an outstanding job representing me as my defense attorney!!!! I was accused of sexual harassment and was being investigated by the OSI and ultimately found innocent. Being the accused of a crime like this was a shock to me and my family. I learned a lot during this process like the accused ...
"Matt is a skilled, dedicated attorney who will work hard for his clients. He has the experience necessary to identify issues for his clients, and ensure that they are fully and competently represented. As a fellow military attorney, I have reached out to Matt for advice on several occasions, and trust his judgment and opinions."
"Attorney Matthew T. Smith is one of the most knowledgeable, professional, and hard-working Judge Advocates I worked with during my active duty military career. As a civilian attorney, he is the kind of lawyer I would want representing me if I ever needed help: A creative, tenacious fighter who has no fear in the courtroom. Matt and I defended a Sailor at a contested GCM together, and those qualities helped us win a great result against the odds. I would want him on my team in any kind of case! If you have Matt Smith in your corner, you have the kind of legal advocate who can make a true difference. He has my strongest personal endorsement."
"Matt Smith is a talented, innovated, dedicated and intelligent advocate who is committed to achieving the best results for his clients. I have worked with him on cases in the past and can attest to his effectiveness in front of juries and judges alike. Beyond being a truly talented attorney, Matt is also a great person who I would gladly hire to represent me, whether it be for a criminal matter or personal injury issue. So if you are looking for an upper hand, your first call should be to Matt Smith’s office."
"Matthew is an exceptional attorney with excellent legal skills and an individualized attitude towards clients. He is smart, but he is also very open and honest. He has excellent negotiation skills and is great at listening to people."
"Matt Smith is an excellent lawyer and perhaps even better person. I would not hesitate to hire Matt if my liberty was at stake or if I had been seriously injured and needed his help. Matt is driven to help his clients and you could not have a better lawyer in your corner. I can endorse Matt without hesitation."
"Matt Smith is a master at both the military administrative and criminal procedures. I go to him when I have a question about a regulation or order, and he always has what I need. When he takes a matter, he researches it thoroughly and fully attacks it. From his letters to the other side to his motions to his presentation in the courtroom, he does not simply offer adequate representation. He is thorough, detailed, and passionate, and his results speak for themselves. You will not be disappointed when you put your life in Matt Smith's hands. He has my full trust."
"Matthew “Matt” Smith is a true genius in the way he presents his cases. He is one of the most imaginative and daring lawyers I have ever seen. To describe his trial skills as impressive is an understatement. If anyone in my family was charged with a crime, I would pray that they would be so lucky as to have someone with Matt’s talent represent them. He is a true gift to the legal community."
