As parents, we never foresee having to go through the horrors of the court system! We found ourselves in that position in January 2018, when our adult son had an arrest warrant out for a serious felony sex crime.
We met with Attorney James Sullivan for several hours at his office, discussing the facts of the case and my son’s life story. Mr. Sullivan took the time to really get to know my son who has autism and the difficulties in life my son has experienced. Mr. Sullivan is extremely knowledgeable about the autism spectrum and Asperger’s syndrome. He recommended getting testing and books and resources for him and us.
James Sullivan prepared us for the first appearance in court. He advised us to hire a bondsman before going to court. We had the bond in place and the bondsman in the courtroom. Mr. Sullivan was able to get the judge to set a reasonable bond. Our son was able to walk from the courtroom to 49 San Jacinto with his bondsman for processing. He spent NOT ONE MINUTE in jail waiting, which could have been hours or days. For someone with Asperger’s syndrome, that was HUGE. The anxiety level was already off the charts and taking away time in jail gave him room to breathe!
We spent 9 months under the shadow of what was to come. Because our son is honest and had told the truth, the court didn’t have much room for mercy. But, over the months, Mr. Sullivan worked with the prosecutor to make sure he saw a man and not just a docket number or a crime. Mr. Sullivan made sure that he knew what the autism spectrum and Asperger’s syndrome are and the effects they have on our son.
At the conclusion, Mr. Sullivan was able to get a reduced charge and probation with deferred adjudication. As bad as it is, our son often comments on how much worse it could be for him!
James Sullivan was, without a doubt, a gift to our family. Honesty and integrity covered in compassion was our total experience with him. We recommend him highly to any family who finds themselves in the crisis and chaos of the criminal system.
With all the lawyers in Houston, it is beyond belief that we found James Sullivan, who was the perfect match for our son and us. We are eternally grateful to him. We are very blessed.

James Sullivan quite possibly saved my future from disaster. He's a fantastic lawyer to have in your corner and I'm glad I didn't go with someone else.
I recently had a case come up that I needed some serious help with. I never had a criminal record in the past, and with my career, having a blemish on my record like this could potentially black list me. The situation rose when my wife and I started getting into very large, drawn out verbal arguments that sometimes led to the police being called. She had stopped taking her medication (anxiety and depression among others) which led to her irrationality in many situations. One particularly bad morning, we had an altercation as she blocked me from leaving for work and she later called the cops with an assault claim, thinking it would just scare me into coming home. Instead, they arrested me for Assault Family Violence (another fancy way of saying domestic violence), with which the D.A. takes it upon themselves to charge instead of my wife telling them not to.
Needless to say, I was more than a little scared. I could have an assault on my record that could NEVER go away, regardless of probation or deferred adjudication. or pre-trial diversion (make sure to look into this if you have been charged with Assault Family Violence).
I called James Sullivan after talking to about 8 different lawyers. Half of them were outrageously expensive with no promise to do any actual work, while the other half were scaring the hell out of me by saying that I could face jail time.
Sullivan's approach was very different. He was calm, collected, and understanding. His background in various criminal cases gave him a wide breadth of experience – so he could communicate exactly what was coming, the steps I needed to take, and the possible outcomes of every decision. He was prompt, on time, and ALWAYS composed.
In the end, I now have a way to get this case dismissed (without trial) and we are moving forward. Pretrial intervention is another way to get a case dismissed, but what Sullivan worked out is even better.
This was a much better resolution than I could have ever hoped for especially after talking with other lawyers. Sullivan's fees are extremely fair, especially for the knowledge, expertise, and work he puts into your case. The fact that he can convey composure and seems to genuinely care for what you are going through is a huge bonus.
I wouldn't go anywhere else. Give James Sullivan a call first.

We would recommend James Sullivan to anybody in need for help from a criminal attorney. Our son was involved in a very unfortunate case of terroristic thread, second degree felony. The case was particularly difficult as it happened just a couple of weeks after the shooting in Parkland, Florida, being an extremely sensitive topic back then. We first hired a different attorney, but after a month we realized that we needed somebody with a better understanding of how to handle a difficult case like ours in the juvenile criminal system. From day one James shared a very clear vision of how to find a positive outcome to our son’s case. We followed his guidance and he was able to get a deferred probation followed by a dismissal after six months.
James has a lot of experience and knows how to handle difficult cases, no doubt. Beyond helping us with the criminal case, James also provided very valuable advice to my son and helped us as parents to handle the situation. We cannot stress enough how much we appreciate the work James did for our family!

My husband and I have never had to seek a defense lawyer before our "hit and leave the scene" incident. We have insurance which paid for the repairs of the other car involved. Yet, my husband left the scene as he got anxious with fear. Therefore, he was arrested, bailed out, and in need of a defense lawyer. When I used Google to help me look for a defense lawyer, Mr. Sullivan appeared on the screen as near by. Bonus points!! I made phone calls to him and other lawyers to get a feel for their services and fees involved. One lawyer was using scare tactics for me to choose him. What a horrible conversation. However, Mr. Sullivan was easy to talk to and made me feel like everything was going to be alright. Mr. Sullivan knows what he is doing and gets the job done with a great outcome. God bless and a huge thank you to attorney Sullivan for getting the case dismissed after some community service.
Mr. Sullivan is a wonderful lawyer to choose.

I’m so fortunate to have hired James Sullivan who truly cares about you and your family. I spent almost a year knowing Mr. Sullivan and I have to say he was the most caring, thoughtful and supportive person during this entire ordeal.
My son made a terrible decision and committed a sex felony at 13 years old. Our first attorney, a CPS attorney, said he hadn’t received any correspondence from CPS or Harris County Juvenile Probation department. He told us more than likely the case was closed because it had been over a year. However, six months later, we were served with a petition that my son was charged with a serious sex felony. Lesson learned: Do not hire a CPS Attorney but hire a Juvenile Defense Attorney and save money and time.
Thus, I had three days to hire an attorney to defend my son. I next hired a criminal defense attorney recommended by my CPS lawyer. Our second attorney turned out to be the worst nightmare of my life. My wife and I did some research and we selected James Sullivan for his proven record. Mr. Sullivan is a humble, intelligent and compassionate man who is very responsive and understanding. God bless James Sullivan, I wish we had more people in this world like him.
James Sullivan arranged for our son to receive juvenile sex offender counseling with a private therapist. Mr. Sullivan said this would be important at the final disposition hearing, and he was right.
My son is a warm, kindhearted person who is friendly and demonstrates compassion. He is an A and B student who plays musical instruments and participates in school athletics. I wish schools and parents would be more proactive and have a sexual behavioral class to teach our kids right from wrong. Unfortunately, we have not progressed enough for that. I also wish cell phone companies would warn parents about the dangers of unfiltered access to the internet. As Mr. Sullivan explained, hard core pornography online has led unfathomable numbers of children worldwide to sexually abuse other children, with some children acting out as young as five.
I’m writing this review because I want families in a similar situation to make the right choice and learn from my lesson. James Sullivan is your CPS, criminal defense and juvenile defense attorney all rolled up in one, but he is much more than an attorney. He is a caring, thoughtful, compassionate person on a mission to help teens. Mr. Sullivan, thank you for every step of the way, your light shines brighter than the stars above. If only I could have recorded Mr. Sullivan’s passionate argument for pretrial diversion in front of the Judge and the prosecuting attorney. Wow! This guy has superior trial skills! We truly are blessed, and the judge granted Mr. Sullivan’s request and gave my son deferred prosecution. His case will be dismissed in less than a year, and he can get his record sealed at 17. Great job Mr. Sullivan and God bless you!

We cannot recommend James Sullivan highly enough. We were devastated when our 13 year old son was accused of sexually assaulting a young child. We didn’t know what to do or who to turn to. We googled juvenile attorneys and Mr. Sullivan’s name came up. We were very impressed with his credentials, especially that he was Board Certified in juvenile law. We called him on a Sunday, and he answered the phone. He had a very calming manner that immediately reassured us.
Mr. Sullivan met with us the next day, explained the process, and made a real connection with our son. Not only did Mr. Sullivan guide us through the legal situation, but he also directed us to find resources and counseling to help our son and our family. Mr. Sullivan’s advice was straight-on throughout our entire process and he led us to make the best decisions for our situation.
The counselor thought our son might have mild autism, and our son was subsequently diagnosed with it by a specialist. Mr. Sullivan is also very familiar with Autism Spectrum Disorder and his keen insight at our final hearing made a big difference.
Our son’s case began eight months ago. Mr. Sullivan said it landed in the worse juvenile court in Harris County, and he hoped the Democrats would win in November because the new judge would be fair and open minded. He told us he too had run for judge in 2010 and knew most of the Democratic candidates. Fortunately, they won.
On our recent and final court day, Mr. Sullivan was FABULOUS. When we went before the new judge, we did not have an agreement with the prosecution. The prosecution wanted our son to be placed in a lockdown juvenile facility and then be on probation until age 18. We wanted our son at home on probation.
During the hearing, Mr. Sullivan first acknowledged the horrible decision our son made and the resulting harm to the young child. He also skillfully corrected the prosecutor and made it clear the prosecutor did not know what he was talking about and was trying to minimize autism and its effect on children. Mr. Sullivan spent several minutes educating him and the judge on the difficult challenges faced by children on the spectrum. He spoke passionately from the heart, and even the judge was visibly moved. At his request, our son received one year of probation at home. Because of Mr. Sullivan, we are helping our son and rebuilding our family. We can’t thank him enough!!!!

In November of 2018 I was arrested for the first time in my life. I spent time in jail for family violence and it was a moment of failure for me. I feared that my future and everything I had worked for over the course of my life would be in jeopardy. I’m not rich but I wasn’t going to risk my future any further, so I reached out to Mr. James Sullivan. I found Mr. Sullivan by googling for family violence lawyers. It was a Sunday and his name popped up showing that he worked on Sundays, so I gave him a call and we spent about an hour talking on that Sunday evening.
Mr. Sullivan turned out to be the best decision I made in 2018. I told him I would be pleading not guilty and he told me he could possibly get the case dismissed, which was a relief to my stress. We went through 4 settings together, which required little to no work on my part.
At each of our meetings Mr. Sullivan showed great professionalism, positivity, dependability, passion, and most of all he showed me that I could trust him. We talked about life, goals, and achievements. He shared his experiences and wisdom with me, recommending changes to certain aspects of my life. Overall, James Sullivan not only helped me legally, but he connected with me as a human being, and for that I will be forever grateful.
My case was dismissed in exchange for community service and I left this experience as a better person. I 100% and wholeheartedly recommend Mr. James Sullivan as an attorney.

I was charged with the felony of endangering a child after speeding and briefly racing at nighttime on the freeway. My 5-year-old was asleep on the backseat and not buckled in. At first, I didn’t know who to hire and I didn’t have that much money saved so I couldn’t afford an expensive lawyer, so I searched for a long time to find the right one, and I finally pulled the trigger to hire James Sullivan. He agreed to reduce his fees and work with me. I was nervous because I thought I hired an affordable lawyer, and in my mind I thought he was not going to put as much effort as a more expensive lawyer but glad to say I picked just the perfect one.
For several months, he tried to drop my felony down to a misdemeanor but from the police video and all the information against me he was unsuccessful. He spoke to several prosecutors in the court and in hope that they would drop it down or to at least give me a pretrial intervention but none of them agreed. The case was frustrating already and even I started to give up, but he didn’t. He just wouldn’t take no for an answer.
He tried one more person much higher up in the DA’s office, and thankfully she agreed to give me the opportunity to participate in a 2-year pre-trial intervention. It was the best feeling ever. Sullivan worked that hard because I am a resident and he told me that I could be deported or denied citizenship if I pled guilty even to a deferred adjudication. My wife and two children are U.S. citizens, and I was afraid I would get sent back and lose my family forever. I am thrilled about the outcome and grateful for Mr. Sullivan’s efforts. Glad I chose this lawyer. He went above and beyond for me, I am sure he will do the same for you too.

I stumbled across James's reviews here on Avvo after my son was being charged with felony assault on a public servant for being one of many students throwing notebook paper the last day of school. I contacted James via phone and he was in court but was able to answer his phone and discuss my son's case. I immediately felt at ease. He was able to get my son out of the detention center within a half hour maximum after I hired him which was about 10 minutes into our phone call. During this horrible process he helped our family tremendously. When we went to court he was able to get the charges non-suited with just a few requirements that my son had to do. My son fulfilled the requirements and the case was closed non-suited- without us having to go to trial. Mr. Sullivan really takes the time to get to know his clients and goes the extra mile to get things done quickly( which is uncommon for criminal court). He knew my son was not guilty of assaulting a teacher with notebook paper and he did not stop until the case was non-suited. I would highly recommend him to anyone that finds themselves in need of a criminal attorney. He will go above and beyond for his clients.
