Criminal Defense Support

I had the pleasure to use Jim Sullivan's legal services and I can't find the right words to describe how Great Jim is. He is very passionate about serving my needs, taking the time to explain everything, and doing his very best to support. He ultimately got my case dismissed. I would strongly refer J...im to anybody who needs a great criminal defense Lawyer.

Best Juvenile Lawyer in Houston

Last year I had to hire a lawyer to represent my child who got into trouble with the law. Not knowing any better I called C. Johnson, the first lawyer on the page. His ad said he was a juvenile law expert and the #1 juvenile attorney in Houston. I later learned that was a lie. He said he knew everyon...e and could get my son’s case dismissed. He charged a lot of money and I found out he was no expert in juvenile law. I talked to several lawyers in the juvenile system and they all said they rarely if ever see him in juvenile court and that he was not an expert and certainly not #1, that he was closer to worst than best. As they explained to me only a board certified lawyer can advertise as an expert. I asked if they could recommend such a lawyer and several recommended James Sullivan and said that he wins cases at trial. I searched online for Attorney Sullivan and saw that he was a board certified juvenile lawyer. I called him and we spoke on the phone for almost an hour. He showed a genuine interest in helping my son and understanding the full story. I was happy that he was willing to take on my son’s case. He understood I was a single mom, and he offered to reduce his fee to almost half the amount of the first lawyer. I was thrilled to find a good lawyer that was willing to work with me. Mr. Sullivan said he didn’t want to settle for a plea deal. He believed in my son who said he was innocent and that he would sooner take the case to a jury trial than to accept a plea deal. Fortunately it didn’t come to that. After several settings, Mr. Sullivan got his case dismissed! Since then I now know that lawyers that brag, are arrogant, use scare tactics or charge huge fees are not as good as they say they are and may be much worse. Lawyers such as Mr. Sullivan that are humble, sincere, honest, and have a good heart are the ones you want to fight for your child. I wholeheartedly recommend James Sullivan as the attorney to represent your child.

Thank you for your kind review. I am pleased that I could help to get your son's case dismissed. I am sorry you had such a bad experience with Charles Johnson. I have represented several of his former clients. You are right about what the other lawyers told you. It is unethical to advertise as an expert unless you are certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is not certified in any area of law and certainly knows better than to suggest otherwise.

Good man to have on your side.

Mr. Sullivan was the first and only I had to contact about a close friend of mines case (probation violation), he was quick to represent her on her charge and went to the jail to explain all of her options. She had no bond and he was able to get her an affordable bond and I was able to quickly bail h...er out of jail. He was then able to get her back on track and probation ended within 60 days and all fines dropped. I now keep his card in my wallet and will recommend him to anyone. Plus he's a real down to earth guy and a pleasure to talk to.

VERY Grateful Parents

As parents, we never foresee having to go through the horrors of the court system! We found ourselves in that position in January 2018, when our adult son had an arrest warrant out for a serious felony sex crime. We met with Attorney James Sullivan for several hours at his office, discussing the ...facts of the case and my son’s life story. Mr. Sullivan took the time to really get to know my son who has autism and the difficulties in life my son has experienced. Mr. Sullivan is extremely knowledgeable about the autism spectrum and Asperger’s syndrome. He recommended getting testing and books and resources for him and us. James Sullivan prepared us for the first appearance in court. He advised us to hire a bondsman before going to court. We had the bond in place and the bondsman in the courtroom. Mr. Sullivan was able to get the judge to set a reasonable bond. Our son was able to walk from the courtroom to 49 San Jacinto with his bondsman for processing. He spent NOT ONE MINUTE in jail waiting, which could have been hours or days. For someone with Asperger’s syndrome, that was HUGE. The anxiety level was already off the charts and taking away time in jail gave him room to breathe! We spent 9 months under the shadow of what was to come. Because our son is honest and had told the truth, the court didn’t have much room for mercy. But, over the months, Mr. Sullivan worked with the prosecutor to make sure he saw a man and not just a docket number or a crime. Mr. Sullivan made sure that he knew what the autism spectrum and Asperger’s syndrome are and the effects they have on our son. At the conclusion, Mr. Sullivan was able to get a reduced charge and probation with deferred adjudication. As bad as it is, our son often comments on how much worse it could be for him! James Sullivan was, without a doubt, a gift to our family. Honesty and integrity covered in compassion was our total experience with him. We recommend him highly to any family who finds themselves in the crisis and chaos of the criminal system. With all the lawyers in Houston, it is beyond belief that we found James Sullivan, who was the perfect match for our son and us. We are eternally grateful to him. We are very blessed. Grateful Parents

Calm, Collected, and Experienced

James Sullivan quite possibly saved my future from disaster. He's a fantastic lawyer to have in your corner and I'm glad I didn't go with someone else. I recently had a case come up that I needed some serious help with. I never had a criminal record in the past, and with my career, having a blemis...h on my record like this could potentially black list me. The situation rose when my wife and I started getting into very large, drawn out verbal arguments that sometimes led to the police being called. She had stopped taking her medication (anxiety and depression among others) which led to her irrationality in many situations. One particularly bad morning, we had an altercation as she blocked me from leaving for work and she later called the cops with an assault claim, thinking it would just scare me into coming home. Instead, they arrested me for Assault Family Violence (another fancy way of saying domestic violence), with which the D.A. takes it upon themselves to charge instead of my wife telling them not to. Needless to say, I was more than a little scared. I could have an assault on my record that could NEVER go away, regardless of probation or deferred adjudication. or pre-trial diversion (make sure to look into this if you have been charged with Assault Family Violence). I called James Sullivan after talking to about 8 different lawyers. Half of them were outrageously expensive with no promise to do any actual work, while the other half were scaring the hell out of me by saying that I could face jail time. Sullivan's approach was very different. He was calm, collected, and understanding. His background in various criminal cases gave him a wide breadth of experience – so he could communicate exactly what was coming, the steps I needed to take, and the possible outcomes of every decision. He was prompt, on time, and ALWAYS composed. In the end, I now have a way to get this case dismissed (without trial) and we are moving forward. Pretrial intervention is another way to get a case dismissed, but what Sullivan worked out is even better. This was a much better resolution than I could have ever hoped for especially after talking with other lawyers. Sullivan's fees are extremely fair, especially for the knowledge, expertise, and work he puts into your case. The fact that he can convey composure and seems to genuinely care for what you are going through is a huge bonus. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Give James Sullivan a call first.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
