Jacob relates to his clients because he knows the importance of a job. Jacob grew up in a poor family, and as a child he personally experienced how unemployment and underemployment can lead to homelessness. This is why he finds real meaning in advocating for individuals facing trouble at work.
Jacob was Born in Richmond, Virginia. Before starting J. Madison PLC, he worked at the White House, where he was a member of the Vice President's legal team. He worked to help the President and Vice President identify and address some of the nation's most important legal issues, including those effecting minorities and women in the workplace. Jacob also worked for the Department of Justice and the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Loudoun County, Virginia where he prosecuted criminal cases.
Jacob is a graduate of George Mason University School of Law and of Arkansas State University. He has a strong interest in information technology and the ability of evolving technology to improve the legal services available to clients. While at Mason Law, he published the article, “Storing Documents in the Cloud: Toward an Evidentiary Privilege Protecting Papers and Effects Stored on the Internet,” in the George Mason University Civil Rights Law Journal. He calls himself “a pure digital native.” Because of Jacob’s research into privacy and cloud computing, the popular technology website interviewed him and included his comments in an article about the attorney-client privilege in the modern age.
Not strictly a legal nerd, Jacob also has a love of sports. Jacob was a competitive women’s gymnastics coach for seven years before turning to a career in the law, and he has a bachelor of science degree in sport management. He has coached here in Virginia and at competitions around the country, including at the USAG JO National Championships. Jacob still loves coaching, and he sometimes fills in as a substitute coach at an area gym.
Jacob and his wife Jenny are parents to three beautiful girls. Between raising two (soon three) girls and helping his clients, Jacob sometime finds time to relax and enjoy science fiction, legal thrillers, and mountain biking.

Service Dog ADA Law
Mr. Smalls was extremely straight forward and honest concerning the possible outcomes of my ADA case. He took over the case from another attorney. He came in fighting like a terrier going after a rat. He was able to make the other party understand that this was a serious matter. His spirit as...

Excellent, Trustworthy, Intelligent, and Compassionate
I hired Jacob for an employment case in which I was the victim of abuse, harassment, and discrimination. Upon meeting Jacob (over the phone) I expressed to him a handful of emotions; more or less "venting". After my lengthy catharsis, during which he never interrupted, he validated my concerns; rep...
I'm so grateful that Elizabeth let me help her turn an unpleasant situation into a positive outcome. Elizabeth's case was relatively complex, involving multiple defendants and difficult legal theories. She had been subject to some of the most unpleasant intentional harassment I've seen in a workplace. The outcome in her case wasn't guaranteed. It never is. But I was able to marshall the evidence, witnesses, and law to her benefit, and I'm delighted that she was as pleased with the representation as I was! Thank you for such a fantastic review, Elizabeth!

"Jacob is a young and entrepreneurial lawyer who is helping a lot of people who feel they have been wrongfully terminated. He's taking on some of the older, more established firms who have outdated fee arrangements that can be expensive to the client. He's very knowledgeable and friendly and I would encourage you, if you have a question about your employment situation, to reach out to him. Good info at his website too!"

"I endorse this lawyer. I have had the great pleasure of working with Jacob Small on several matters. He has an outstanding ability to deal with complicated factual and legal issues which unfortunately arise all too often. Jacob's ability to provide strategic insight is particularly valuable to me as a lawyer and to his clients as well. Anyone is well served to contact Jacob with an employment law case."
