I retained Greg Hill & Associates to seal the arrest record and court file for an arrest many years ago that never resulted in a case against me being filed. However, I feared the record of the arrest would stigmatize me unfairly in my work. Greg Hill & Associates filed a petition under Penal Code section 851.91 to have the police report of the arrest and the court file sealed and it was granted. Greg is the MOST dedicated attorney I have ever met. He researched a case and despite long odds, his motion was granted and will reduce the sentence on my son. I was in court and amazed at how he held his ground over a tough challenge by the Judge. And then the judge granted his motion. A wonderful miracle, but based on hard work, not luck.

I had three prior felonies that I wanted reduced under 17(b). After numerous hours of internet searching, and consulting with three different lawyers, I was told that due to a receiving a prison sentence, it could not be reduced under 17(b). I found Mr. Hill. I found Greg Hill through an internet search when looking for someone to assist a friend serving 22 years in prison for armed robbery. Like Mr. Hill, my friend is a military veteran. A law was passed in California (1170.91) a few years ago that allowed veteran prisoners in California who were tried before 2015 to have a re-hearing on their sentences if it could be established that PTSD was a factor in their crime. There are not many prisoners who qualify for a re-hearing under this law, and, as such, it was difficult to find an attorney who understood how to successfully present this type of case. First, the prisoner has to establish their rights to have this hearing under the narrow definition of the law; then, it has to be proved that PTSD was a factor in the commission of the crime (i.e., prove a “nexus” between PTSD and the wrong-doing). Few people have been able to meet the first criteria of eligibility, and those that have qualified for a re-sentencing hearing have found it difficult to prove “nexus” or win a sentence reduction. Fortunately for my friend, Mr. Hill turned out to be the rare attorney who knew how to develop a strategy and present the case successfully despite the lack of precedent. My friend had 5 years knocked off his sentence, which resulted in his imminent release from prison for time served under the newly lowered term!!! Making this happen was no easy task. The judge opened the hearing by stating that he had no intent to rule in favor of a sentence reduction because nexus was not shown. However, when the judge asked whether the attorneys wanted to say anything before his final ruling, Mr. Hill prevailed by pointing out errors in the DA’s filings and then convinced the judge to hear testimony on the issue of how PTSD was a factor in the crime. Mr. Hill's clear analysis of problems in the initial sentencing and his strategy in presenting the case won the day. When the judge said he would reduce my friend’s sentence by 5 years, we were stunned: the judge’s stated bias was more like a “summary judgment,” and there was seemingly no way to change his mind. However, Mr. Hill’s demeanor and arguments won the day. Even the bailiff was stunned and remarked how rarely this happens. Mr. Hill deserves all the credit in turning the judge around and for freeing my friend after serving 14 years of his too-long prison sentence. I have only the highest praise for Mr. Hill. I’m a long-time prisoner rights advocate, and I have been involved with many legal matters in the last few decades. I’ve worked with many attorneys in this time, and Mr. Hill stands out as the most responsive, caring, experienced, and intelligent attorney I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. As a vet himself, he is dedicated to helping his fellow vets by making it possible for them to afford high-quality legal representation. Mr. Hill always returned my calls, texts, and emails promptly while we worked through all the issues in his case. I had a 664/288(a) conviction resulting in formal probation which was completed without any probation violations. I had always wanted to expunge it and put behind me. A lot of lawyers told me, being a 288(a) violation, it could not be expunged (dismissal pursuant to 1203.4). The court had denied my 1203.4 petition few years back and my trial lawyer did not bother to oppose the denial. And earlier this year I bumped into the Five-Star Lawyer Greg Hill. Greg has a blog citing case-law mentioning 664/288(a) dismissals. I described him my situation and he listened. He gathered his thoughts and told me exactly how he would pursue it. I hired him over the phone. His team was in-touch with me while preparing the petition. I provided whatever case details were needed. They asked me to read the final version of the Petition before signing it electronically. The plan was to submit the petition citing the case-law in detail. Once filed the petition with court, we waited in anguish for DA/Probation Department's response. Neither DA, nor the Probation Department filed any response - remember the same DA had vigorously opposed and had it their way few years back. Finally the court granted 1203.4 dismissal for 664/288(a) conviction. There is a lot of misinformation out there and people tend believe what they read online. I retained Mr Hill and his associates after countless fruitless consultations with other attorneys regarding CA expungement of decade long felonies and misdemeanours from my 'youth'. Emailing attorneys was frustrating. I didn't get a great feeling about any of them, truthfully. One private attorney who had twice previously represented me competently seemed unclear about the laws regarding expungement and seemed far more interested in quoting exorbitant fees. Another attorney that was referred to me by a trusted source did not seem to know that my particular situation legally entitled me to file for expungement, and initially, erroneously told me that I was ineligible. Only after I pointed out a relevant 2014 appellate court decision (i.e. on whether an expungement was possible in spite of a suspended prison sentence that was never invoked), did this other attorney consider going on retainer, albeit, at sky-high rates.
