About Jason
Biography
A native of northwest Minnesota, Jason Kohlmeyer learned the value of hard work early, spending summers on his uncle’s farm and serving in the U.S. Army Reserve as an intelligence analyst while still in high school. He worked his way through Concordia College in Moorhead and later earned his law degree from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul in 2000.
After clerking with the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, Jason saw firsthand how critical it is for clients to have direct access to lawyers who listen, explain, and advocate. That belief shaped his approach when he co-founded his law firm in 2008—focused on delivering highly personal and effective legal service.
For more than two decades, Jason has practiced exclusively in family law, representing clients in Mankato, Rochester, and throughout southern Minnesota. His work focuses on:

• Child custody and parenting time disputes
• Spousal maintenance and child support
• Farm and complex asset divorces
• Post-decree modifications and enforcement
Jason has handled nearly 1,500 family law matters and is known for managing high-conflict divorce cases with a calm, strategic approach. He has also spoken nationally on family law topics and is committed to improving the profession through mentorship and continuing education.
When not in court or meeting with clients, Jason is often on his motorcycle, walking his dogs, or spending time with his family in Mankato.

I went to Jason Kohlmeyer to defend me with my 2nd DWI and possible Forfeiture of my car. Jason told me from day one that I would not have to sit jail time and there was no way they could keep my car. Replied last May 27, 2012One of the problems when representing a person charged with a 2nd Degree DWI is that they generally have a serious alcohol problem. It’s been my experience that active alcoholics have a tendency to blame anyone but themselves for their actions. No criminal defense lawyer promises a person won’t do jail and no promise was made in this case. What is frustrating about this review is that I negotiated an incredible plea bargain with the prosecutor that would keep the client from jail!! But the client decided house arrest was not a good option and opted for jail instead. Unfortunately, the vehicle was forfeited; however, it was because the client failed to tell me an absolutely key piece of evidence. Communication is a two way street it's very important to call your lawyer back! After more than 12 years as a Defense Attorney, I have learned to accept when a chronic alcoholic blames you not to take it personally. I'm sorry you feel this way and I truly hope you get the help you need. -Jason Kohlmeyer
