We had a very bad luck with two lawyers before coming to Tom for my son's DWI case, originally charged as misdemeanor but then upgraded to felony charge. In fact, I called Tom literally two days before a trial was to start, a trial into which we were forced by a second lawyer mishandling a plea barga...in, and telling us that there is no way to go back to the misdemeanor offer that was made and that trial is our only option and possibility to avoid felony on the record. When we saw on a hearing before the trial how unprepared he was, I called Tom's office, and when Tom returned my call. I asked for a consultation. We saw Tom literally the night before trial was to start, he stayed late for us. When we talked to him, we felt that he is the most knowledgeable and trustworthy lawyer we met. He did not dismiss the danger of going to trial as the other lawyer repeatedly did, but we felt confident that Tom would handle it in the best way possible. In fact, seeing him made me realize even clearer what a mistake we made in choosing the previous lawyer, the difference was so stark. Tom came through as most knowledgeable person we talked to, and he was reasonable, professional and compassionate. I hired Tom then and there, even though this meant losing money I paid to a previous lawyer, I did it because we felt Tom was our best and only hope. The next day, when he came into the courtroom, we saw that the prosecutor's face changed, seeing Tom instead of our previous lawyer. From then, he fought the case on two fronts: preparing for the trial and trying to reopen the possibility of returning to a plea bargain offer, that our previous lawyer lost due to one of his inexplicable disappearances. During this time, we met with Tom several times, and emailed him many more times with our ideas and suggestions of what we thought could be helpful for the trial, as well as with requests to convince DA to return to the plea bargain offer, and Tom was patient, accessible, invariably polite (we had a very different experience with two previous lawyers), and I felt that however difficult the situation is, he was the best person to handle it. Long story short, Tom was able to convince DA to return to plea bargain offer, even though many months have passed since they withdrew it. If this had not happened, and I consider it a miracle that Tom was able to make it happen, we would have gone to trial and I have every confidence that he would have done the best job possible at the trial. Another lawyer in his office has handled a small matter for us in a very professional way and successfully. In addition to that I am grateful to Tom for helping me, free of charge, in a dispute that I cannot discuss due to agreement made. I only wish that we have engaged Tom right away! Every lawyer in Tom’s practice that we met made a good impression of professionalism and knowledge, we could always reach someone in the office, and communication was excellent. I know charges are brought upon people everyday, but his assistance also helped keep my family together since I would no longer need to worry about immigration.
