I was arrested for DWI in July 2014, after failing to stop at a police roadblock "checkpoint" in a neighborhood with a school environment. The second officer that I stopped for claimed to be on a manhunt for a guy in his 40's in Black/Jeans potentially armed with a gun who left the scene earlier the ...same night, & claimed that he could smell the odor of alcohol in my breath. Not only that, but their search was oddly/coincidentally called off as soon as they found me. Despite only having two beers & passing the sobriety test, never been pulled over, or have had any trouble with the law, it was obvious that I was not drunk, but completely nervous, & did very well on the sobriety test. The arresting officer that gave me the test was very crude & unprofessional with me. After claiming that I was drunk & failed every part of the test, he humiliated me in front of the camera, put me under arrest, towed my car, giving a blood test at the station, & had to spend almost two & a half days at the Collin County Jail. Feeling hopeless/scared/stressed of what to do next after being released, the car that was towed died on me two weeks later, & put me in a huge financial crisis/struggle in my life. Having a past family member with a "DWI" experience, who ended up hiring a lawyer that turned out to be a complete fraud, Sharon Curtis was recommended to me & after the first meeting, I knew that I was in good hands. Months later we then receiving all the police reports/documents from the DA in regards to my arrest/case. We found so many inconsistencies that were false/untrue that did not match up at all with how things were that night, or how I was on the video. After receiving the blood results & my level was a tiny bit higher than the legal limit, & the harsh/cruel offers the court gave in regards to pleading guilty between probation/jail time, Sharon recommended to my family & I to take my case to trial by jury. My blood alcohol level was .095, got it retaken & was lower than the legal limit. It shows how mishandled the blood was kept, as it truly did not match up with how sober I truly was the night I got arrested. After many delays that took over a year to finally set a date, it was then scheduled for February 2016. The trial took 2 & a half days. Sharon truly knows what she's doing in the courthouse, & exposed the arresting officer of the lying fool he really is, as he consistently lied under oath, & proved to the jury of how the inconclusive/unreliable the blood results can be. Throughout the trial, so many other lawyers who had other cases going on that were watching mine, were making great positive comments about Sharon's performance while she was representing me. At the end of the second day, the jury could not reach a verdict, & it ended up going on a third day, After a long wait for the jurors to reach a verdict, the jury proven me NOT GUILTY! In the end, it was all worth the wait/investment, & Sharon delivered her job/duty to the fullest. Sharon was a true guardian angel of mine through this huge setback in my life, & a great friend. She will treat you like a family member of her own, not as a criminal/customer, & no matter how bad your case/situation is, she will not judge you or put you down, but give you hope & faith to get through it all. Sharon Curtis was the first attorney I decided to meet based on the excellent reviews from her clients out of tens of other practicing attorneys in Collin county. Right from our first meeting I found her very honest, direct and straight forward about my case and the possible outcome rather than suga...r coating words of false hope and comfort unlike most other attorneys. During those months she worked extremely hard, met with the DA several times, fought for my case with tooth and nail and finally got the charge dropped from a bumped up felony to Misdemeanor B with some fine and probation with a possibility of early release. Ms. Curtis has been my guardian angel and Godsend from above. My family and I are eternally grateful for her guidance, wisdom, honesty, professionalism and compassion. My son got in trouble and there was absolutely no excuse for his actions, his case had “no defense” from my point of view. We only knew that this will never happen again, but why would the prosecution believe us? What Mrs Curtis did was above and beyond everybody’s expectations. We went from making ...jail time plans, and trying to fit them with his college plans, to normal life as if nothing happened. Mrs Curtis will find this needle in a haystack to defend you and achieve the best possible outcome to minimize the impact of the criminal offense on your future, or minimize the punishment if convicted. She will also work on correcting your behavior that lead to this offense by sending you to counselling, community service, and other corrective actions. My son was not convicted of the offense and Mrs Curtis was able to reduce the level of the offense, which will allow to have the records expunged in two years. Here are several learnings from this experience: 1) All lawyers sound very good when you talk to them. This is their job. You can be brainwashed by any one of them no matter what they are practically able to do for you. We selected Mrs Curtis based on the AVVO comments by her clients and by looking at the Collin County criminal records. She is Board Certified in criminal law, and there are only 15 lawyers in McKinney who are Board Certified. There may be other good lawyers, but do you want to experiment with your future? Any difference in the cost between lawyers should be ignored as criteria to select a lawyer. Because when it comes to, lets say, jail time of 5 months vs jail time of 5 days with Mrs Curtis, I can guarantee that you would be ready to pay the difference, if any. 2) Most of the people are not familiar with the effects of a criminal offense on the person’s future. All the job applications require a criminal background check. All rental applications also. All opportunities will be limited. I came across a nonprofit organization when I was looking for community service hours for my son. They declined to take him to work for them for free when I told them that there is a criminal offense charge pending. You need to call Mrs Curtis and do not think that you can do it on your own. 3) Do not talk to the police, prosecutors, or any government official about your case. You may be thinking that you are doing something very smart at the time, but every word you say will go against you, or make it harder for the lawyer to fix. They will also record the conversation secretly without notifying you or asking for your permission. Depending on your offence most of the government officials are required by law to report your conversation with them to authorities. Do not talk about it at your job and any place that you call on the phone. Do not ask the “victim” for your case to talk to anyone. Call Mrs Curtis and talk with her or her office staff only and do what she tells you. Mrs Curtis has office assistants, who handle the office when she is in court. Jose answers the phone usually, very helpful and honest person.
