Michelle May O'Neil has 24 years’ experience representing small business owners, professionals, and individuals in litigation related to family law matters such as divorce, child custody, and complex property division. Described by one lawyer as "a lethal combination of sweet-and-salty", Ms. O'Neil exudes genuine compassion for her client's difficulties, yet she can be relentless when in pursuit of a client's goals. One judge said of Ms. O'Neil, "She cannot be out-gunned, out-briefed, or out-lawyered!"

Family Law Specialist

Ms. O'Neil became a board certified family law specialist by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1997 and has maintained her certification since that time. While representing clients in litigation before the trial court is an important part of her practice, Ms. O'Neil also handles appellate matters in the trial court, courts of appeals and Texas Supreme Court. Lawyers frequently consult with Ms. O'Neil on their litigation cases about specialized legal issues requiring particularized attention both at the trial court and appellate levels. This gives her a unique perspective and depth of perception that benefits both her litigation and appellate clients.

Top Lawyers in Texas and America

Ms. O’Neil has been named to the list of Texas SuperLawyers for six straight years, 2011-2016, a peer-voted honor given to only about 5% of the lawyers in the state of Texas. In 2014 to 2016, Ms. O'Neil received the special honor of being named by Texas SuperLawyers as one of the Top 50 Women Lawyers in Texas, Top 100 Lawyers in Texas, and Top 100 Lawyers in DFW. She was named one of the Best Lawyers in America for 2016 in appellate law and, most recently, made the DMagazine list of the Best Lawyers in Dallas 2016 in appellate law.

Author and Speaker

A noted author, Ms. O'Neil has written her second book Basics of Texas Divorce Law, which is on its third edition in 2016 and available through .  Her first book, All About Texas Law and Kids, was published in September 2009 by Texas Lawyer Press (now out of print). The State Bar of Texas and other providers of continuing education for attorneys frequently enlist Ms. O'Neil to provide instruction to attorneys on topics of her expertise in the family law arena.

Money very, very well spent on this lawyer!
I met Michelle O'Neil, during a time when I needed a family law appellate lawyer. Within a few short mins of my first meeting with her, I realized that not only was this lawyer a knowledgeable appellate lawyer, but I should have hired her from the beginning (hind-sight)! My particular family law case was highly complicated, however, Michelle was the very best person to handle it. Michelle is highly experienced, resourceful, smart, tenacious and I would not have wanted anyone else by my side in court - ever! She is simply the BEST!

By far the Best!
I first me Michelle O’Neil in 2015, She was recommended by a friend that is an attorney, but not in family law. Choosing Michelle and her firm was the best decision I could have made. When I first met her in a moment of crisis, Michelle gave me a moment of clarity and helped me see how important to my son it was to do the right things to keep him safe. Our case has been very difficult and has taken a long time to get through because of issues caused by the other side. Michelle and her team has worked with me and have been very supportive throughout the process. Her team has accepted my son, my wife and I as one of their own. Michelle has assembled a staff that is second to none. Everyone from the front office, the paralegals, and lawyers have been there for us this entire time. Jere, Mark, Sandra, and Karri have all made major differences in our lives. Even though Michelle is not handling the case day to day anymore, she is still involved and even shows up in court to support us. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank her for everything she has done for us. Michelle and O’Neil Wysocki are the best choice, by far! I recommend them to anyone who needs help with family law matters.

Simple divorce turned ugly
Love this firm. When I walked in all disheveled and scared. They first gave me a plan of action "to get out and get safe" before they even had me sign papers. They were very deligent with my case. Answered all my questions & met me with compassion at a very difficult time in my life. It was suppose to be simple and quick but tings got hard and ugly instead. Michelle took over and got it done!

The absolute best!
Michelle O'Neil was able to accomplish in a few short months what multiple other attorneys couldn't in over 2 years! After spending tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours in court, Nick was running out of hope and resources. Ms. O'Neil, after hearing his story, thanked Nick for his service and waived his consultation fee! She made every effort to handle his case in a financially conservative manner and moved swiftly to ensure that he could afford to win! Her team was amazing as well! We had every phone call and every email answered quickly and never once felt out of touch with his case. He now has custody of his two youngest children! And she made it look absolutely effortless! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Excellent Attorney!!
Michelle, is representing me in a divorce. As my spouse is in another state, jurisdiction issues were raised. At the hearing Michelle was very well prepared and did an eceptional job addressing the issues. She is an excellent well versed Family Law attorney that I have no reservarvations reccomending.

Knowledgeable, Tenacious, Caring
I am an attorney in town, and when I was looking for a divorce lawyer, Michelle’s name came up over and over. It was a great decision to hire Michelle to represent me. She was tenacious and work diligently to bring an end to my ex-wife’s madness. Not only she is knowledgeable about the law, she is also a great litigator. I recommend her to anyone that is going through a divorce or a child custody fight.

A lot of people say "they saved my life" but this is a true statement in regards to Ms. O'Neil. Thanks to her and her firm, my daughter is now enjoying college. She handled my case from the Texas Supreme Court (which we won) back to the District Court where we won again. She can't be intimidated by opposing counsel, she didn't back down. You can count on her and the firm to stand by you no matter what, she will fight for you.

Cost of Hiring this lawyer - What you should know? When to settle vs hire an attorney?
I hired her for handling Child Support case and she assured that it is a simple case and should be closed out soon with legal bill of about 3 to 5k. The Judge on pretrial says this attorney would cost about 20 to 25k if it goes through trial. Now. Why didn't the attorney share the cost(range)... The attorny will always say the cost depends on the caseand that is true but if judge can give a figure for this attorney so can the attorney.. Knowing cost upfront would have allowed me to reach a settlement with the other party.. I would rather pay for Kid (CS) than paying an attorney. If you are hiring an attorney for the first time and if you go to this lawyer, you should know that you will be charged a minimum of 10 min for each single line email or even a phone call to setup appointment and the final bill if your case goes to trial is about 20 to 30k for single trial child support case.. I didn't find this attorney to be effective at all. I had to reach settlment with other party and still ended up paying 20k in legal fees. It is for you to decide if it is worth spending a combined total of 35 to 50k in legal expense or settle out of court. and let the Kid / other party get that benefit instead.

Response from Michelle O'Neil March 24, 2014
Sometimes cases end up being more complicated than originally expected. This is especially true when new facts develop over the course of the case, or when the opposing side takes unexpected position. It is virtually impossible to guess at the beginning of a case how much the total cost will end up being. There are too many moveable parts, so to speak. However, the client always has the option of reaching an agreement with the other party to stop the contested nature of the litigation. The quicker the parties can work together to get to an agreement, the less each will spend on attorneys.
