This law firm is a joke

Basically this guy will fight against you and the institution that you are trying to sue even if your rights were violated he doesn't care

Dear Mr. Barten: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. While we value feedback, it’s important to address some inaccuracies in your comments to provide clarity about your interaction with our firm. First and foremost, you did not speak with any attorney or member of our legal team. Your case was reviewed during our standard intake process, where we assess whether potential cases align with our practice areas and expertise. Based on the information you provided, our intake team promptly informed you that we were unable to assist with your matter and suggested alternative resources, such as contacting your local Bar Association. It is both untrue and unfair to imply that our firm has a bias or hidden agenda to protect institutions like Capella University. K Altman Law Firm has a well-documented history of standing up for individuals whose rights have been violated, including against large institutions. However, we cannot take on every matter that comes to our attention. This is not a reflection of the validity of your concerns but rather a determination based on the nature of your case and our ability to provide effective representation. We understand how frustrating it can be to seek legal help and feel unsupported. However, we expect reviews to be truthful and constructive. Mischaracterizing our intentions and professional integrity does a disservice to both our team and prospective clients seeking genuine insight into our services. We would respectfully ask you to take your review down. We wish you the best as you pursue your case and hope the resources, we have provided help you find the right advocate for your situation.

Despicable office

It should be a CRIME that they even state they want to represent the laws and claim to help protect children, mental health, etc! I want my time and breath back after how worthless a phone call was with their Attorney, Salomon Radner. He wanted nothing to do with the cases of the Public Schools al...lowing my child to be bullied so badly that he was suicidal at just 7 and, again, at 9 years old; nor how the school refuse to follow the laws of I.D.E.A. to care for my other child, who is Autistic, and was illegally restrained, secluded, restrained again while being in seclusion of a room illegally too small with 2 adult males in the room.

The ethics rules that govern the practice of law do now allow me to describe the facts of this matter in detail, but I can say this: This young lady was never a client, and the only “crime” I committed was advising her that we did not feel that her circumstances warranted civil rights litigation. I sincerely wish her and family the best.

DO NOT USE FOR SCHOOL/ APPEALS!!

Waste of time and ten thousand dollars. These people don't do a thing and hardly get anything done if anything at all. They are unresponsive and do the bare minimum for your case. On top of that, they are forgetful and have a hard time understanding your issue. So many broken promises from this firm.... Before acquiring their assistance, I was already on the right track with my appeal process and doing everything I needed to report my school. Keith promised reliable assistance in the appeal process and a "big brother" look out so the school faculty would not hassle me so easily, and if all failed, we would talk about the next steps into litigation (if it was necessary). They never actually wrote an appeal. They just literally repeated all my previous appeals and then put them into their own words that was abysmally wrote up. I had to change so much it was obvious Robert, my "rep" had no idea what was going on with my case. In total, I think he wrote three emails to my school that were all magnificently rejected. In the end, my school rejected all attempts for my "representitves" to reach out and talk. Keith Altman's law firm pretty much told me what I already knew from the beginning and gave up with their tails between their legs. The school said no, and Altman Law politely agreed with them and made no attempts to fight the school. I NEVER once spoke with a layer for the whole time I was using their assistance. I made countless calls and emails to Keith requesting assistance and a new representative and I never spoke with him after my first 300$ consultation. These people are scams! Please take your money elsewhere and do your research! I was desperate and wasted my money and pride with these "people".

It is unfortunate to hear about your dissatisfaction with our services and appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. We strive to provide dedicated and effective support for all our clients, and it is disappointing to learn that you feel we fell short of your expectations. We want to acknowledge the complexity of your case and the considerable efforts we made on your behalf, including repeated communications and strategic attempts to navigate a challenging situation. Unfortunately, certain actions and decisions—despite our guidance—compounded the difficulties and escalated tensions with the school, ultimately impacting the outcome. While we understand your frustration, it is important to clarify that the process required collaboration from all parties. Our recommendations and requests for your participation were critical steps in progressing your case. In some instances, incomplete actions or deviations from the plan made achieving your desired resolution more difficult. We regret that you did not find the support you were looking for in our team. We are continually evaluating our processes and client interactions to ensure that we uphold the highest standards of professionalism and care. Your feedback provides an opportunity for us to learn and improve.

Unethical and Unprofessional

The firm is unethical and unprofessional. The attorneys should be investigated for violating the Michigan Code of Professional Conduct. I lost $15,000, received no meaningful representation, and was left to defend myself in a workplace investigation. Furthermore, despite appalling and nearly non-exi...stent representation, they repeatedly refused to refund my money and, only after numerous requests, produced inaccurate and misleading billing records. By way of background, I have been an attorney for over twenty years. I am also a college professor. A student made false allegations against me in retaliation for a complaint I filed against the student for egregious misconduct. To be clear, the allegations against me were false. I contacted this firm and paid $150.00 for an initial consultation, where I spoke to an attorney from Boston for about five or ten minutes (the firm is based in Michigan). He quickly requested a fee of $15,000 to represent me. After that, I never heard from him again. Also, I had one meeting with Mr. Altman to discuss my case, which lasted no longer than fifteen or twenty minutes. Over the next three months, I never heard from him again. Instead, I was given a non-attorney assistant, whose responsibility was essentially to answer my questions, even though he was not qualified to provide legal advice. In fact, over the investigation's three-month period, this firm spoke to the university once and drafted two poorly written letters to the university in which they misstated the facts. Quite frankly, they were embarrassing. When human resources released their report, I was forced to spend hours drafting not one, but two written responses and ultimately resolved this situation myself. I contacted the "assistant" to complain about their conduct. He admitted that he "dropped the ball" and apologized. After that, I never heard from him again. Instead, out of the blue, I received a call from an attorney in another state -- recall, the firm is based in Michigan -- who was suddenly assigned to my case. I had never spoken to this attorney before, and the attorney asked me what I would like the firm to do for me. At this point, I was so appalled because it was obvious that retaining this firm was a terrible mistake. The attorney ultimately wrote one more letter, and I was left to fend for myself until the investigation was officially concluded. After many hours of drafting responses and meeting with university officials, the investigation was resolved favorably. But I did all the work. Ultimately, I lost $15,000. I demanded a refund repeatedly. Indeed, in a good-faith effort to resolve the matter, I compromised and said I would accept a refund of $7,500. They refused. What's worse, I repeatedly requested their billing records; when I received them, they were inaccurate and misleading with, among other things, duplicate entries for the same conversations or tasks, and no indication of how much time was spent on them. It was shocking. For the past year, I have hesitated to file a complaint against this firm because I feared that the firm would respond with falsehoods. After speaking with my attorney colleagues, however, and showing them the billing records, they were adamant that I should file a complaint with the Michigan State Board of Ethics. I intend to do so, and caution everyone to not, under any circumstances, retain this firm.

Thank you for your feedback. We take all reviews seriously and empathize with your situation. That said, we strongly disagree with your characterization of the work provided in your matter. The scope of the work for your matter is outlined in the Fee Agreement you signed on April 19, 2023 which reads, in part, “our firm’s goal is to achieve a favorable resolution at the school level without the need for a lawsuit. Although we cannot guarantee the process, the outcome or the timeframes involved, we will do everything within our professional ability to obtain the best possible outcome for you at the school level.” The work conducted by my firm, including communication with the university and drafting responses, was done in line with the scope of our representation and as promised during your consultation, at which time I also clearly indicated to you that a non-attorney Advisor, with significant experience in education, would facilitate your matter. While we regret that you were dissatisfied, we maintain that our work was of high quality and contributed significantly to the positive result you had.

Believe the negative reviews

Hired them for a school dismissal, as another person previously said in their review Mr. Altman claims he knows the schools attorney and has a good rapport. The initial letter written by their advocate was very elementarily written and the lack of communication after the letter is sent left much to ...be desired. When I wanted to speak directly with the attorney I was treated as though I was being a bother, after spending thousands of dollars I believe I am warranted at least one conversation. In the end the answer remained the same but the effort behind it was not worth what it cost. When getting dismissed from the school you are truly at the school's mercy do not pay an attorney unless you have an actual legal matter that has some sort of precedent behind it; do not use for academic dismissal otherwise you are truly wasting your time and money.

We apologize if our communication fell short of your expectations, we strive to maintain open and clear communication with all our clients. Regarding the initial letter written by our advocate, we aim to create documents that are clear and effective. We regret that it did not meet your expectations and will take your feedback into account for future cases. As for the opportunity to speak directly with Mr. Altman, we understand the importance of direct communication with the attorney handling your case. We are sorry that you felt you were treated as a bother. We understand that the outcome of the case was not what you had hoped for, and we empathize with the frustration that comes with such situations. While we cannot guarantee outcomes, we are committed to putting forth our best effort for every client and believe we did so in your matter.
