High Cost, Limited Engagement, and Disappointing Outcome

We paid $11,000, and we do not feel the service justified the cost. We only met with Mr. K. Altman twice. During the first call, he presented himself as having computer science expertise, but the way the discussion went made us feel as though the allegations were being accepted rather than strongly c...hallenged. Communication was also very slow. It took months to send one follow-up letter requesting a legal counsel/academic counsel meeting. In many emails, the case resolution manager simply stated that she could not advise, and the responses we received felt generic. Unfortunately, we lost our case very badly, and we do not feel we received the level of support, strategy, or advocacy we expected. My husband had already received an email from the law office asking for a review, so I am sharing our honest experience. Based on what we went through, we believe the negative reviews are accurate.

Misrepresentation

I want to warn others: do not pay upfront. I paid $13,000 based on a meeting with the attorneys and the scope of work they outlined during that call. After I paid, the scope changed, and the contract reflecting the reduced scope was created days later and was not signed by Keith Altman until more tha...n two weeks after he took the money. No meaningful services were provided before or after payment, and because the entire $13,000 was taken upfront before a signed contract existed, it has been extremely difficult—if not impossible—to dispute or recover the money. Please learn from my experience: never pay a large fee upfront without a signed contract and a fixed scope of work in writing.

Scammers

I paid this lawyer $11,000 and he did nothing but take my money. I was in my last Semester at Roane State Nursing, and the Disability Dept. The Asst. Dean and Instructor worked hand in hand to prevent me from graduating. I gave proof to support my claim, and he agreed to take the case, long story sh...ort, I paid $350 for a consultation, and another $11,000 and all they did was tell me what the school dtated they were not willing to do. I never received an opportunity to meet wth the legal team and the college to discuss my case. Altman sent me emails through the portal stating they did not get a response from the college on several occasions, Then I received a letter stating they were closing my case. It seems as if they take large sums of money from their clients ad deliver nothing. I have over $80,000 in student debt, and for a firm to take advantage of vulnerable people is devastating. Do not waste your money and time with this law firm they will scam you and give nothing in return!

We disagree with your characterization of the work performed in your matter. Our records reflect that your engagement involved substantial advocacy work, including written submissions to the institution’s counsel, a conference with General Counsel, repeated follow-up efforts over several months, a formal demand letter, receipt and transmission of the school’s response, and subsequent records work in connection with possible next steps. Because we take client confidentiality seriously, we will not discuss the details of your matter in a public forum.

Not organized

Scheduled consultation with one attorney at 10:00a, was rescheduled with a different attorney at 3:30p. Was texted 4 times we are running 5 minutes behind consecutively. Called and got refunded for my consultation.

hank you, Travis, for sharing your feedback. I am sorry to hear that your consultation experience did not meet expectations. In our effort to provide excellent service, our attorneys sometimes need to move quickly to address client concerns, and on occasion consultations run longer than anticipated in order to provide the best value, which can impact scheduling. We take feedback seriously and would appreciate the opportunity to learn more. Please contact us directly at [email protected] so we can address your concerns. – The K Altman Law Team

Scammed out of $16,000

I paid K Altman Law $16,000 for an expulsion and Title IX attorney. After taking my payment, communication almost completely stopped. I went six weeks with no updates, no guidance, and no response at all. Then on Aug 19, I finally got an email saying the lawyer I hired, Amelia Lafont, was “no long...er with the firm” and they were still trying to figure out what happened with my case. I was never notified she left. No replacement attorney. No transition. No plan. No work product. To this day, I have not been refunded the $16,000, even though I did not receive the representation I paid for. I’ve now filed a formal complaint with the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission and am submitting a claim to the Michigan Client Protection Fund. This whole experience has been extremely upsetting and unprofessional, and I don’t want anyone else to go through this.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
