A+ Service

Nick does a great job informing you of everything you need to know about bankruptcy. The guide he provides is a very helpful tool and kept us in the know throughout the entire process. He promptly returns emails and takes phone calls.

Professional, Knowledgable, Fast and Thorough

After ten years of marriage my wife called me on the phone one day to announce she was filing for divorce. I was shocked to say the least. In an effort to "be a man" and "do the right thing" I foolishly absorbed ALL of the debt and after the decimating blow of a foreclosure. I figured it was best for... the kids in the long run. I went to Nick Thompson's web-site upon the recommendation of a friend and was immediately struck by the informative nature of the site. Mr. Thompson could be a teacher of bankruptcy law, not simply a practitioner. I called his office and scheduled my free consultation. When I met with him I was discouraged and confused, not to mention embarrassed by the failure of my first marriage and my financial disarray. But he patiently listened to my story and encouraged me to have hope. After the first thirty minutes my heart felt lighter as he assured me none of this was the end of the world and that there was a proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel". As he advised me, he never once tried to "sell" me on filing bankruptcy, in fact, he discussed a number of options and encouraged me to do what was best in my situation. He took the time to explain to me how a bankruptcy would impact my credit and what steps I could take to rebuild it in the years that followed. He even directed me to some financing companies that specialize in helping folks like me quickly re-establish their standing. Filing was easy, I simply had to gather the required documents, enter my debts into a website program that was as simple as turbo tax and Mr. Thompson did the rest. He contacted me well in advance of my court date and reviewed the proceedings with me. He even made a personal call the day before the hearing to remind me to be there on time. Walking into a federal bankruptcy court was something I never dreamed I would need to do and it was something you cannot prepare yourself for; however, having Nick Thompson as my attorney absorbed 90% of my fears and he did prepare me when I couldn't prepare myself. When we met the judge (it was only the three of us at a small table!) his confidence masked my fears, as he did most of the talking for me. I had more than an attorney at my side, I had a true advocate. There were no surprises whatsoever, and everything went just as smooth as he said they would. In summary, I strongly recommend him as a bankruptcy attorney. He is knowledgeable, generous with his time, the process was simple, he was prepared on the day of my hearing and everything has worked out perfectly. I also would note that the cost of his services were quite comparable and the end result has saved me tens of thousands of dollars... well worth the cost of the bankruptcy!

my experience

Mr Thompson did a okay job. There were times I wish I would of read his book first then talked everything over. I would of loved to have help with the student loan. All my credit card debt was wiped out but there was still a lot of other debt. Overall he did a good job and I would recommend his offi...ce to others.

I appreciate your comment. Bankruptcy isn’t ordering a pizza. A client and the lawyer have to work together to get great results. If your attorney just files a bankruptcy petition and walks in and out of court you will get poor results. That’s all most offices do. If you want outstanding results you have to put work into it. Most of our clients think we do an outstanding job and get outstanding results. We show clients the best credit sweeping services. We partner with Dave Ramsey so clients can take the bankruptcy version of his financial peace university course free. Elsewhere, you pay hundreds to thousands to take this course. The president of the mortgage bankers association shows our clients how to get a mortgage after bankruptcy at a prime rate so buying a home is cheaper than renting. At our office you can take advantage of what other offices don't even tell you about. When there is additional legal work that can be done to eliminate a second mortgage or a student loan we do it. We don’t just file the petition. If you plan and design the petition properly it will wipe out income taxes and debts you thought you couldn't wipe out. Sometimes we wipe out a second mortgage or student loan. I believe we give great directions in showing you how to live within a budget and by doing our job.

Bankrutcy

I hired Mr. Thompson because he said Chapter 7 wouldn't be a problem for me to apply for. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with his service and the outcome of my case. First, there wasn't problem for Chapter 7, then he said that I won't be able to go with 7, because of some issues, so I agreed for ...chapter 13, because he promised a low monthly pmnt. Then, after the bankruptcy was filled, he said that the pmnt will need to be increased (more than doubled). Although it was hard on me, I started paying the new, higher pmnt right away. I've never questioned his suggestions, I trusted that he knew what he's been doing and has my best interest in mind. After few months I learned by an accident, from another lawyer, that my bankruptcy has been dismiss more that a month ago. I was unpleasantly surprised, because I've never received any notification from his office about anything! They've been even rarely returning my calls when I leave a message. Also, I learned early on that they would not respond to my emails. Of course I've received letters from the trustee, but didn't pay much attention to them, because: 1st- I'm not familiar with any of law language terms or actions; 2nd- I expected that, if there is something important, I'll be notified by my lawyer. The last call I made was a couple weeks ago, when I learned about the dismissal. I talked to the secretary and asked her why I wasn't notified and what are my options now. She said she'll talk with Mr. Thompson and will call me back. That still hasn't happen!

This client was advised by us to file a bankruptcy and close her business two years before came back to file. Originally the case could have been a Chapter 7 but she waited until after creditors attached her home to file. After they became secured debts with liens on her home they had to be repaid in a Chapter 13 to keep her home. The Chapter 13 payment originally should have been about 200 but because she waited the debts were much larger. The payments rose to over 400 per month but this included her car payment. We met with her and predicted this would happen. She didnt want to pay the higher payments the Court demanded. The case was eventually dismissed after warnings were sent to her by the court, the trustee and our office with a personal meeting with me. There was nothing wrong with the quality of the work we did. The plan needed to be amended to increase the payment and pay the increased claims. She remains free to refile her case if she wants but whether she files a case with us or another attorney the payments will have to be over 400 per month. If she had closed the business when I told her to she could have filed as a Chapter 7. We do return phone calls but clients who are working do not always answer their phones. In this case the client called once when I was not in and then left a bad review.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
