John graduated from a local high school, attended in-state universities and law schools. He is married to the former Kristen Davis and they are blessed with nine children - Wini ('05), John ('07), Lyn ('09), Andy ('11), George ('14), Charles ('16), James ('18), Elizabeth ('20) and Vivian ('22). John is A/V Rated by his peers through Martindale-Hubbell and actively engaged in a general trial practice of law in Alabama – handling and litigating civil/personal injury cases, and defending criminal allegations.
Upon passing the bar examination, John was admitted to practice across Alabama and in the United States District Court - Northern District of Alabama. He joined the Alabama State Bar (ASB). And, the local bar association where he serves on its Executive Committee, as President. John was chair of the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Committee facilitating free monthly CLEs for local bar members and the twelve (12) hour Last Chance Seminar. John was also on the Executive Board for the Madison County Young Lawyers Section (MCYL) for several years before becoming its president. During his time as a MCYL board member and, eventually, its president, the Judicial Appreciation Party began and flourished into yearly event thanking the judges in Madison County, including its municipalities and towns, for their hard work. Attendees bring their significant others to meet the judges and other families in the legal community.
Additionally, John served as Chair to the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program (MCVLP) from 2014 to 2016 and was an active board member when new life was breathed into the MCVLP which grew from a handful of lawyers in 2005 to 85 lawyers in 2017 -- closing over 800 cases per year. MCVLP assists those who need it most and who have the fewest personal resources to allocate to reach justice or have their day in court. John is very proud of the growth and hopes to continue assisting people in need.
The Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit appointed John as one of three attorneys to be on the Local Indigent Defense Advisory Board. This board determined the most efficient and effective method of handling indigent criminal cases in Madison County for those facing incarceration without sufficient means to afford effective counsel. Additionally, he was one of five local attorneys placed on the Indigent Representation Administration Committee to administer the court-appointed indigent defense plan adopted in the circuit. He served from 2010 to 2014 in these capacities.
The ASB appointed John as a member to several statewide committees and task forces. It also chose him as an alternate on Character and Fitness panels and Disciplinary Panels. John was elected to ASB's Board of Bar Commissioners (BBC) for three consecutive terms from 2012 to 2021 and was chosen for The Commissioner's Award amongst the BBC in 2021. In 2022, he was inducted as a Fellow by Alabama Law Foundation and the recipient of Pro Bono Fairness Award through Legal Services Alabama.
