F. "Bill" William Powers

also known as Bill Powers

About me

Committed, Compassionate Champion for Justice

Bill Powers is known as a polite, yet hard-nosed veteran of the courtroom. “Make no mistake, justice is a battle.  My goal is to fight to the best of my abilities, while also being courteous to my opponent,” Powers says. “It’s something I work on every day.”

This is the seventh year in a row Powers has been named to the North Carolina Super Lawyers® list. “It blows me away to be included in SuperLawyers by my peers.  I am so incredibly grateful for the honor.  Even being named once to SuperLawyers is a high professional compliment.”  It's hard to imagine being one of the "Top 25 SuperLawyers in Charlotte,"  let alone one of the "Top 100 SuperLawyers in North Carolina."

The State of North Carolina is wonderful.  I love traveling to different jurisdictions, working with all sorts of lawyers, judges, prosecutors and court personnel.  It is a rush to walk into a new jurisdiction for the first time.  Frankly, I can think of no more fulfilling way to practice law.”

“My practice in the area of DWI related cases continues to evolve.  This year we’ve expanded our focus to help civil litigants in the DWI / DUI genera.”

Powers makes a point to share what he knows. “The most rewarding aspect of my professional life is helping other attorneys.  I don’t believe in hiding information or experiences.” Though he spends most of his time in the courtroom, Powers keeps up in the classroom, too. “The best way to learn is to teach.   Preparing for Continuing Legal Education classes forces me to be on the forefront of law and legal issues.  I have so much yet to learn.”

Powers views his job as an opportunity to counsel clients through difficult times. “My passion is to help people, not judge them,” he says. “I take my responsibility seriously. People trust me with their worries, concerns and lives. I absolutely must be there for them.” For Powers, it is that simple.

I am a fellow attorney in the Mecklenburg County Bar, and have planned or spoken at more than 30 continuing legal education programs for attorneys over the past several years, with over 100 attorneys. I have gotten to know Bill well since September 2015, when we first began speaking at attorney seminars together, and he is among the most knowledgeable, prepared, thorough, engaging, and dynamic speakers I've worked with. He knows his subject matter and his audiences well, and it's easy to see why he's such a successful trial attorney. He will be an outstanding North Carolina Advocates for Justice President.
