Ryan Ravindra Rambudhan

I recently hired Ryan Rambudhan to represent me in a traffic case, driving with a suspended license, in Fairfax County Court, Fairfax, VA. When I initially spoke with Mr. Rambudhan a month before my court date, he was very personable, down to earth, and honest. As we spoke and I gave him the details of the traffic stop, he formulated a strategy of defense and explained the litigation process. I hung up feeling very protected and confident in his ability. On my court date, he successfully defended me and case was dropped. I was amazed with his negotiation skills and his professionalism in the court room. After seeing so many other defendants receive punitive measures for the same offense, I was so grateful to Mr. Rambudhan for his skills and services. I was charged with a .09 DWI first offense in Virginia back in August after being pulled over for not having my headlights on after leaving a local restaurant with some friends. Dash cam footage also showed me performing very well on the 5 sobriety tests the officer made me do. I consulted with Mr.... Rambudhan and I was very confident in him and his knowledge of DUI's and his experience in VA and retained his services immediately. However, after our consult, that was the last time I ever saw or spoke with Mr. Rambudhan directly. I was unaware that my case would be "passed off" to another attorney at the firm until I was at the courthouse for my first court date looking for Mr. Rambudhan only to be welcomed by a completely different person, Ben Schaefer. I assumed this might just be typical procedure to allow different lawyers in the firm to handle the "minor" proceedings and then Mr. Rambudhan was the heavy hitter for trial and matters alike. However, this did not happen. Mr. Schaefer convinced me to take my case to a jury trial under the belief that the jury may rule in my favor after witnessing the dash cam footage. I agreed to this because the plea the prosecutor offered was not anything close to a "deal" according to my understanding of the law. Additionally, I do not believe Mr. Schaefer negotiated for a lesser penalty such as "wet reckless" in my plea deal, nor did he clearly explain the pros and cons of taking the plea vs. jury trial. He seemed eager and confident about the trial, so I trusted his professional opinion. My trial was in early March. Again, Mr. Rambudhan was not present from the day I retained him even up to my trial, but by this point, I had already paid half of the agreed fee for his firms services and it was too late to change counsel. Needless to say, the jury trial went poorly and not only was I found guilty, but I was also given jail time, which was completely miserable to serve. This is all in addition to the mandatory 1 year suspension of my license, alcohol class and $750 fine that I had no idea would also be imposed because the law mandates. I feel like that was something my attorney should have made clear to me as well. Every time I met with my counsel, it seemed that Mr. Schaefer knew I was going to lose, and was more concerned with attending to his next client for the day rather than battling for my innocence in what I believe was a very close case. This is not a knock on Mr. Schaefer, he was a very nice guy he just may not have had much experience, especially in a trial setting. I am however, very disappointed in Mr. Rambudhan and how he handled this matter. I did not consult with Mr. Schaefer, I consulted with Mr. Rambudhan. I HIRED Mr. Rambudhan based on the rapport built during our consult. It was unfortunate that he did not handle my case directly and that he did not even inform me that there was a possibility another lawyer would be handling my case. That on top of the unfavorable outcome makes me extremely dissatisfied with this experience and I would strongly advise against retaining this attorney.
