Larry Henry Bowen

I have worked with Larry a couple of times (the first time was to handle my divorce). And both times I was very satisfied with the results. He is friendly, he takes an interest in your life, and from time to time he offers emotional support and advice. (Anyone going through a divorce knows what I'm t...alking about.) Most importantly, he cuts through the BS--and will explain the difference between how the law works in theory and how things typically work in practice. He will suggest simple and practical shortcuts for getting what you want--even if it costs him legal fees. As for fees, yes (as other reviewers have mentioned) all lawyers are expensive, but Larry always gave me excellent value. In one complex pension-related process, I know for a fact that he got the job done for many thousands less than what other lawyers were requesting.

Larry and his firm were recommended to me by a mutual acquaintance. And, not having had any experience with any part of the legal system, my apprehension was immediately allayed by Larry's personableness, knowledge and efficiency. That put my mind at ease throughout the entire process of my legal is...sue. He is also very communicative to the point I always knew what was occurring and what if any potential ramifications might result. He is always clear on what he needed from me. Additionally, I always felt well prepped and briefed on the strategy going into a court session. I would not hesitate to recommend him or his firm.

I was divorcing and I wanted as much time with my son as possible. I understood already, as a father, that the chance for f...ull custody of my son in this state is very unlikely. Larry provided clear and unfiltered feedback and counsel, based on my desires, and to that end, he was extremely upfront about the following areas: 1) Interaction with my spouse - Larry was clear that tempers would be high during negotiations and proceedings, and that was no exception in my case. Larry provided constant and consistent counsel and support regarding how to proceed with my spouse through negotiations in order to ensure that I was in the best possible situation and not involved with highly negative correspondence that consistently came from my spouse. 2) Time with my son - Larry constantly advised that I spend as much time as possible with my son, and that I explicitly document all time spent with him. Because in that year of separation in the state of Virginia, for much of that time, we did not have a state recognized custody agreement. We had an agreement between each other, but not a formal agreement. Larry highly encouraged and advised that not only do I request more time with my child on top of that, but that I document, in detail, the time I spent with him. 3) Custody Settlement - Related to the second bullet, because of the amount of time that I spent with my son and the counsel that Larry provided me, I have a custody plan that gives me time with my son for more than 50% of the year, which is outstanding for my son and I and ensures that I have protected time to shape his life and ensure that he has the best chance to succeed as an adult. I will forever be grateful to Larry for recognizing my desires and ensuring that I understand that while I couldn't possibly have full custody of my child, that I could have very close to that. 4) Supporting Legal Matters - I was served discovery and interrogatories by my ex spouse's representation. Larry was very upfront about this, advising me to complete as much of the requirements myself to avoid exorbitant legal fees. I leaned on him for assistance where needed, but he helped me to avoid significant fees by being honest and encouraging me to work on as much of the requirements as I could, vice taking these himself and charging me after. 5) Negotiations - Larry's expertise in all negotiations was priceless. I needed this desperately, and Larry consistently delivered. In particular, I was able to settle both custody and support out of court, and was able to have the type of custody that I hoped for. Larry worked well with her counsel and always kept me informed of how negotiations were preceding. I was never in the dark, and on the final day, when all settlements were completed out of court, I couldn't thank Larry enough. I have recommended Larry to other people in similar situations to mine and I will continue to do so. If you have clear goals in divorce, and in particular, if you have children, then I highly recommend Larry as your representation.

Very good with my divorce, absolutely terrible second time, with my domestic support. Extended a very simple, very well documented $3,711 medical co-pays reimbursement for 2 years, to rake up about $15,000 in legal fees. I did all the work, getting all the insurance statements, and I put the files t...ogether to save money. And he did not even remind the judge that the party at fault should be responsible for all legal fees, which was his main job to do!!!! He refused to file for appeal, because "it was too complicated", but he continued to bill me after the case was closed, when I called for billing questions!!! I told him there is no more legal advice after the last day in court, I only called his office, not him, to clarify billing issues. I also refused his office's offer to file for garnishments, and did it myself to save money, but his office billings kept on going, and going. He charged me for conferring with another attorney, even though I specifically advised him i do not authorize any more charges. If he wanted to refer me to another attorney, having his receptionist giving me a name and a number, should not cost me over a $100.00!!!!! For two years, his only concern was delaying procedures to accumulate the fees, and not to expeditiously solve my case!

We have found Mr. Bowen to be pleasant to work with and talk with, straight forward with his advice, and responsive to our questions. He was sensitive to our needs, and while providing advice and guidance, was not pushy at all as to which way we should go. While the costs for attorney services are ...always high, we didn’t feel like Mr. Bowen was ever trying to run costs up…actually the contrary in many aspects. His approach in trial was effective and successful. We know others that have used Mr. Bowen's service with success as well.
