It was a weekend night when I received a legal document stating that my ex-girlfriend had applied for a restraining order against me. Before this, I had never been involved in the criminal justice system. I am currently applying for jobs and graduate school. I knew that a restraining order against m...e would inevitably show up on my background check and destroy my life. Most importantly, I knew there was absolutely no actual need for the restraining order— It was just an attempt by my immature ex-gf to make my life miserable so she could feel better about herself. I knew I had to fight this and set the record straight, but I realized that the odds were stacked against me: I was up against a dishonest ex who was hoping to abuse the pro-victim attitude that the #MeToo movement sparked in judges everywhere. Even though I found out about the restraining order application on a Friday night, I knew I needed immediate help and I wasn’t willing to wait until Monday morning to get started. Immediately, I called over a dozen lawyers; since it was after normal business hours, I had to leave voice messages on answering machines and hope that someone would get back to me ASAP. Most of them never returned my call until Monday; some called me back on Sunday; and some lawyers didn’t even bother to respond. Ann was the only one who got back to me that same evening. She immediately gave me her cell phone number and told me to text and call her if I ever needed to speak to her. Ann definitely did her research, and eventually proposed a plan in which she would reach out to my ex, explain why the restraining order application would not stand up in court, and advise my ex that it may even backfire and cause more significantly more damage to her (i.e., my ex) than to me. This back-and-forth continued for several days between Ann and my ex, but ultimately, Ann and was able to convince my ex to withdraw her ridiculous application for a restraining order against me. And all this happened weeks before our first court date! This favorable result would not have been possible without Ann’s indefatigable tenacity, her strategic negotiation skills, her extensive legal knowledge (especially pertaining to protective orders and the criminal justice system), and her dedication to fighting for her clients—even if it meant having to work over the weekend and not waiting until 9 AM on Monday to get started with my case (which is exactly what the other lawyers wanted to do). As someone with no criminal history, I was extremely anxious throughout this process and I’m so grateful that Ann was on my side: not only is she a brilliant lawyer, but she promptly returns calls, is always polite, and charges a very reasonable fee (which, in my case, was a lump sum as opposed to an hourly rate).
