I contacted Mr. Powers for advice even though we already had an attorney. He called me back on a Sunday and spoke with me for at least an hour. He listended to me, offered his suggestions and advice, and then went even further, offering to contact our attorney. He followed up with 2 emails after consulting with our attorney (our case is in another county). Mr. Powers is an ethical, compasionate, and knowledgable person who was very helpful to my family. Thank you, Mr. Powers for taking time from your busy schedule to help me.

Getting arrested for a DWI is the absolute worst and when it happened to me I had no idea who I should turn to. Bill called me back on a weekend "when I was arrested" to ask me a few questions. I met with him soon after. First off Bill is a true professional and knows exactly what he is talking about. I would have to say there is nothing pertaining to DUI law in the state of NC that this man does not know about. He knows what should and has to happen from the time the cop decides to pull you over until the time you are released from custody.
My case went to trial after 18 months of patiently awaiting for Iredell County prosecution to gather their ducks. My case was also a refusal to blow which complicated things even further. I have to say that the District Attorney was outstanding and presented a very nice presentation and argument against me to the judge, however he was competing with Bill Powers. As I sat there watching the district attorney strip my dignity and absolutely tear me apart in front of the judge I honestly thought that I was going to be found Guilty of Driving While Intoxicated, however I myself underestimated the experience of Bill Powers.
In the end Bill pulled through for me and literally squashed the prosecution and I was found Not Guilty. It was Bill's experience, his passion and above all his ability to give one of the best defense statements I have ever seen in my life. It was something you would see on television. He's like a Great White Shark and will fight for you. Is he Cheap? No, but if you need a great lawyer Bill Powers is the one. If I were to be convicted of a DWI/DUI, my professional career would suffer greatly. I could not afford to have a DUI on my record. Bill was not only understanding, but he was sympathetic and compassionate about my case. On a personal note he is a really nice guy and someone that you can just sit down to speak with and not feel uncomfortable being around. To comment on the above rating's:
Trustworthy? 100% - Tell him everything about your case. If you were drinking then tell him how much
Responsive? His staff is very responsive and will take care of all your needs that day or within a very short time span. However that being said, Bill is a very person and will not be the one responding to your needs once your case is up and running. You will have to wait a week or sometimes 2 in order to meet or speak with him.
Knowledgeable? There is nobody more Knowledgeable than Bill Powers.
Kept me Informed? I would have to say his staff was excellent and keeping me informed and throughout my court hearings and trial Bill was excellent at keeping me informed and or explaining to me what was happening as they were speaking "Law". Overall keeping me informed? I would say Good.
The problem with getting arrested and being charged with a DWI in Iredell County is the fact that nothing happens quickly. NOTHING! There is a high amount of frustration that stems from your case just "pending" and from showing up to court to have it deferred for another date. I wanted to be informed of what the status was and at times there were no answers. Was that the fault of Powers McCartan? I would say NO, it's just the back log taking place on the prosecution side. Good luck

Bill was a true professional. He and his staff kept me informed every step of the way. He cares about his clients well being and has a clear understanding of the consequences for each family if not treated with absolute professionalism. Bill and his staff were available for any and all questions I had throughout the process. He has a real passion for life and people. I highly recommend Bill Powers as an attorney. His experienceand success with DWI cases speaks for itself. "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail" .... Bill and his staff are clearly more prepared than any other firm. Thank you Bill.

I was caught in a checkpoint a couple years ago, and was charged with a DWI. While the situation seemed dire, Bill helped me understand that the circumstances surrounding my case gave me a very good chance at a positive outcome. We battled hard over a period of almost 3 years, and although we didn't get the result we wanted, I can be confident that BIll and his team did everything they could to help me. Bill is widely known as one of the best, and although we didn't win, I would still highly recommend him. Thanks for giving it your all, Bill Powers!

Mr. Powers and his team are highly qualified, energetic, empathetic and capable. You want this man on your side to handle the often turbulent waters associated with law enforcement's zealous and sometimes bias pursuit against law abiding citizens. He will make sure the system doesn't rail road you down a path which ignores your civil rights.

Bill represented me for a DWI case in which I blew a .08. His staff was very responsive and helpful during this stressful time. In court, our motion was denied, so I became really worried that I would be found guilty. Bill did not flinch. He meticulously dissected the video of the field sobriety tests, focusing on how well I did. The judge must have been convinced because he said he found reasonable doubt and then said the words, "Not guilty." My life would have been severely impacted by a guilty verdict, so words can't describe how I felt. More importantly, I am fortunate my incident did not impact others, and I have changed to ensure nothing like this happens again. Thanks Bill!!

Bill Powers and his team are best in the industry. Without a doubt your go-to lawyer. His expertise in law surrounding alcohol related charges in surpassed by none. Great attitude, I believed that he really put his heart and soul into my case and the verdict showed it. Would recommend to anyone that gets themselves into a situation where a lawyer is necessary. Very thankful for all of his help to say the least. Be smart out there. But if you do need a lawyer I do not believe there is anyone better than Bill.

Handled my case and won a voluntary dismissal. Great initial consultation which clarified the path ahead both in terms of process and likely key factors in my case. I had heard that Bill was the attorney you want to hire for your side before i needed his services and everything I have experienced has validated that reputation. Bill's staff is also very strong and did a great job in preparation and keeping me informed. Treated me as a knowledgable and respected client.

I utilized Bill Powers and his firm after my DUI infraction in December 2011. During my initial consultation he immediately made me feel at ease with his knowledge of the law and his confidence in moving forward. Not to mention a great personality. He filled me in on all the ramifications and the process as a whole. I am a realist, and did not expect miracles. But Bill is stickler for procedure and that is what you need in a crises such as this. It took a good year, and the results were more than I could ever anticipate or hope for. I would have paid more had I known the results ahead of time. If you find yourself in a similar situation, trust me, he is your go to lawyer.
I learned my lesson and cannot thank Bill enough for his services. Be careful out there.

Bill Powers and their entire firm is amazing! They helped me through the most difficult time in my life. They were always available to answer any questions I had and made me feel as though I was the only client they had.

I hired Bill Powers to handle my DWI case in June of 2011. While the odds were stacked against me in this case (BAC.15), I was told that if you wanted the best representation go with Bill Powers. And that proved to be 100% true. My case was eventually dismissed in November of 2012, a very long 17 months but because of Bill and the tireless effort he showed in my case I remained confident that we could persevere. And persevere we did, by Bill earning that dismissal for me I was able to put my life back together and for that I will forever grateful.
If you live anywhere within the state of North Carolina and made this mistake, hire bill powers and you will not be sorry.

In August 2011 I was charged with a DWI. Along with the DUI charge were charges of speeding in excess of 100mph and failure to maintain lane control. There were injuries involved and reported BAC of .19. Although it was a first time offense, the aggravating circumstances potentially meant jail time and the loss of driving privileges for two years.
The ultimate outcome of the trail was not guilty on all charges. Based upon the evidence provided by the state, Bill was able to argue convincingly to the judge that the prosecution could not provide proof beyond reasonable doubt that I was guilty.
Watching Bill work during the hour and a half long trial was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen. His knowledge of DUI laws and law in general is impeccable. His arguments and counters were as if he knew exactly what the prosecution was going to say before they did.
It was a year and a half before the case actual went to trial but during the entire process, Bill and his team was very responsive to my questions and empathetic to my concerns during that time frame. I had gotten to a point where I felt dejected enough that I was ready to not see another continuance and just get it behind me but Bill encouraged me to keep my chin up and trust him to do his job. I am glad that I did.
I definitely recommend Bill Powers be your attorney of choice.

I had a tremendous experience with Bill Powers representing me in a recent legal matter. Bill went to great lengths to provide me with excellent representation. He made thorough legal arguments within multiple pre-trial motions to ensure that my most basic and fundamental constitutional rights were protected. Most importantly, Bill was absolutely honest with me from our very first meeting, and continued throughout the course of my legal proceedings. He pulled no punches as to what we were faced with, but he was very good at articulating a very pragmatic approach he was taking towards my case. His honesty during the course of our work together was something that I really appreciated because it helped me gain acceptance of what I was facing and what I was going through. It may sound cliche', but there were times when I felt I was treated like I was his only client. I will be forever grateful for the work he did for me.

I recently engaged Bill Powers to help with a legal matter about which I had much stress, and could have conceivable, changed the course of my life. Bill encouraged me through-out the process to stay positive, and let him take care of the matter before the court. I also felt the Bill knew exactly what he was doing, and the when he entered the court room, he was confident and in charge of things. I actually felt a little bit sorry for the DA and assistant DA's once I got to know him and was able to watch how he worked within the system (really impressive). My case was dismissed almost a year to the day of when I was arrested. I couldn't have been more pleased or more sure that the money I spent was so worth it! Looking back, I would have probably paid double up front if I'd have know what the outcome was going to be. I didn't think I even had a chance ...

Bill did a great job in representing my case. I was charged with a DWI over a year ago and I immediately called Powers and McCarten to discusss my case with Bill. He walked me through the process that was about to set forth and he put me at ease in regards to my disgust with the charges against me by explaining my rights and his plan in regards to representing me. I was discouraged many times during the process, but Bill and his staff kept me informed of the circumstances surrounding my case until the very end. His staff was very knowlegable and they were always available when needed. Bill was able to try my case and receive a not guilty verdict. I feel that Bill was very professional in his approach on all levels and I would definately recommend his services to others.

I am very impressed with the services provided by Bill Powers and his team. I highly recommend their services and would certainly use them again for my legal needs.
I unfortunately had originally chosen a different lawyer to represent me for my DUI infraction, which turned out to be a nightmare. I suffered for months with my original lawyer because I was initially impressed with their website. I quickly learned that customer service and a flashy website are two separate things. The best decision I made in all of this was terminating the inadequate services of my first lawyer and choosing to be represented by Powers/McCartan.
Bill Powers was EVERYTHING that my first lawyer was not. He fully explained my situation and described in detail how these cases are handled from start to finish. Furthermore, he explained my options and described in detail the consequences of those options. There was no stone left unturned. Bill Powers' service was the exact polar-opposite of my first hired lawyer who had kept me in the dark from day 1, and immediately shot down any attempt to ask questions. Bill went out of his way to make sure I had all the information and could make informed decisions.
The Bill Powers experience: From the first phone call to Powers/McCartan, every second in dealing with their firm was first rate. It gave me the utmost confidence that I was in good hands. His knowledge of the law was unparalleled. When my case was finally heard, the judge actually referenced Mr. Powers for procedural information. He is obviously highly regarded by the court and his peers. I was able to obtain the most lenient penalty possible for my infraction.
Look no further, Bill Powers is the lawyer you want to represent you. If a member of my family ever needed a DUI lawyer, I would INSIST they use Bill Powers.

I cannot express enough my gratification to Bill Powers and his team at PowMac. Almost 2 years ago I was pulled over in Waynesville, NC for a DWI. From the very beginning I thought I was set up by an officer that saw me and a friend leaving an establishment on main Street in Waynesville. After entering my friend’s vehicle and pulling out of a parking space, I took about 5 seconds to turn on my lights and apparently that was too long of a period to be driving without lights and I was pulled over. I was asked to do sobriety tests in a gravel parking lot with a steep grade, I did as I was instructed until I was asked to give a breathalyzer and refused. I was then immediately handcuffed, arrested and taken to the police department for booking. It was all completely unjustified. After much research I called Bill and asked him if he would represent me. Bill has an incredibly friendly, nice, informative and extremely knowledgeable demeanor. He took the time to review all parts of my case and answer and address any questions and concerns I may have. He even took my court case on a day that he had a vacation planned with his family! Bill Powers is an awesome attorney and a great individual all around. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions regarding his services. E. L. [Number Removed by Avvo]

After blowing a .20 while carrying a concealed weapon I never thought that I would have a clean record again, but Bill refused to loose. He had very realistic advice and was very upfront with me from the start about how I should expect things to go. He was able to win both of my cases, one of which went to the Superior Court when it was appealed after our initial win. I am very grateful to Bill and his staff for all of their hard work and dedication to my cases. They were very easy to communicate with and always answered any questions I had in a timely and professional manner. Thanks Bill!

I received excellent service from the first time meeting with Bill at his office, to the day he was able to get my case dismissed. His office employees were very curteous to me and made me feel very comfortable. I had never gone through anything like this before, so I was scared to death! But he always put me at ease and I definitely trusted him. He would tell me the truth and go through the different scenarios with me. I was fearing the worst, but hoping for the best! Which he gave me his best and won my case!
My case needed to be continued several times, therefore I was able to watch other attorney's handle their cases while I waited. NO other attorney performs in the court room like Bill does! When he gets in front of the judge, he knows what to say and knows the law better than any other lawyer! There were always lawyers following him out of the court room asking him questions on how and why he was able to win so many cases.
You need a lawyer that the judges, policemen and the DA's know. I wasn't aware of that until now. He is well respected in the law community and it shows. I found out he actually teaches the classes and writes books on the Alcosensor, Interlock and Field tests! A judge even referred to his book in the court room!
I completely recommend Bill Powers and his firm!

Bill was the best attorney I could have possibly gotten. On our first meeting, he sat with me for several hours, getting all the details about my side of the story, going over the police report, and explaining to me very clearly exactly how he wanted to approach the case. He walked me through every step of the process, and was incredibly supportive and reassuring. Everything that came along with my DUI was so exhausting, stressful, and drawn-out (it took almost a year to get everything settled), but he was always available whenever I needed him. When it finally came to the day when my case was heard (on the 4th court date, all the other ones had all been continued), Bill knew exactly how to approach the case and the specific judge that I had. I honestly don't think I could have hired a better attorney, and was so thankful that I was found not guilty. That outcome was totally and completely due to him and his ability as a trial lawyer. I cannot recommend him enough to anyone who has to go through the absolutely miserable experience of a DUI.

I had no clue what all was involved with a DWI. Bill was very knowledgeable and was very honest about everything upfront. I had a .08 and had no clue how difficult everything would be. I was able to get the case dismissed, thanks to a great attorney and can leave this nightmare behind me. His staff in the office were very friendly and very informative and quick to answer any emails. I had to do majority of this from out of state and they were there to help in any way they could. Highly recommend!

I was very impressed with the responsiveness from the very beginning. I was really scared about my case because this was my second DWI. After I hired Bill I sent an email with my concerns and let him know how scared I was and I received a phone call from him while he was on vacation! He really cared about my case and wanted to make sure that I knew that he would do everything in his power to get the outcome that we wanted. He and his staff kept in touch with me by email and by phone every step of the way. He even appeared with me in court even though it was 2 hours away. My case was a very difficult one considering my very high BAC so I ended up being found guilty in the end but I believe that I couldn't have found a better attorney to take on the case. I found him on this website and all of the outstanding reviews are completely true. With Bill Powers as your attorney you don't only feel like you have the most knowledgeable attorney but that you have also gained a friend who truly does care. I am still dealing with the consequences of my actions but thanks to Bill getting my probation transferred I am now living in a new city with public transportation so I can still live a full and happy life. Thank you again Mr. Powers. I would highly recommend you to anyone I know!

If you have ever been arrested or charged with a criminal offense you know how distressing the situation can be. Bill made me feel much better about everything and anytime I had any questions regarding the case his staff always got right back to me.
Thanks to Bill and the other attorneys at Powers McCartan my case was dismissed. If I ever find myself in trouble again, Bill will be the first person I call!

I contacted Bill after leaving a message for another attorney who was recommended to me, but did not respond. What a difference! Bill was patient when I asked questions and actively listened to my somewhat complicated story. He let me know that he wanted to do a little research. I was apprehensive due my experience with the first attorney, but Bill’s actions reassured me. He not only responded very quickly, he actually contacted the original attorney on my behalf. It’s obvious that Bill cares about people and wants them to have the best representation they can. If you want an attorney who will be realistic with you and treat you like a person instead of a number, you need Bill to represent you. I highly recommend him to anyone.

Before I hired Bill, I read many of these same reviews and I'm a pretty skeptical person. I was arrested/detained for a DWI and officers concluded that I was almost 3 times the legal limit according to the breathalizer. To put it simply, his services are priceless. People are not over exaggerating on this page.
There were 4 officers all together in my case including the initial call, the stop, the sobriety test, and the breathalizer. Bill challenged every single one of them on the details specific to the stop and conclusively, the judge found that the officers through the course of the entire process, didn't have probable cause.
Before the case I couldn't decide whether to plea or go to trial. I didn't have much to lose either way since I was a first time offender, and most betting people would have not bet on my case....due to the facts it didn't seem like I had a high probability to win. Bill 100% knowing the odds still wanted to fight it, and he won my case...I couldn't believe it but he did it with flying colors. The baliffs, judges and prosecutors know him because of his reputation.
This guy knows his stuff. Don't be like me and ask him questions that he can't answer over and over again, he's the best you can get in this situation. DWIs are awful and can be life changing....but...if you have one and want a chance to win the case and not plea....it would be a colossal mistake not to go with Bill Powers. Again, Bill (and the rest of Powers MaCarten) I can't thank you enough.

Bill represented me for DWI & sent other attorneys, not even from his firm, in his place to get a continuance on numerous court days. The first time he showed up in court to ask for a continuance himself, he didn't even have a copy of the police report for my case (this was months later). The day my case was finally presented, he had no clue about my side of the story, despite the fact that we had met at his office & discussed it on several occasions. He actually seemed to "side with" the officer who charged me with the offense. The officer falsified statements in the police report, but Bill did nothing to refute these statements. In fact, Bill said the officer seemed like a "trustworthy" guy & why would he lie about certain things?? Maybe because he wanted to nail my case? I feel like I completely wasted my money on Bill, because all he ended up doing is recommend that I plead guilty to the offense. I don't feel like he spent anytime actually reviewing my case during all the time we were waiting for the final court date. He was not prepared for me to plead guilty that day & obtain limited driving privileges. He wanted me to call someone to pick me up from the courthouse after my license was surrendered then get a ride to his office the next day to pick up the paperwork, etc. After the fact, when I needed his help/advice on driver's license questions he simply did not respond to my emails and phone calls. I could go on & on, but in short, I could have done the exact same thing he did if I had represented myself. Don't waste your money hiring Bill.

From the very start Bill did a wonderful job of keeping me informed, calm and comfortable with his level of expertise. From our first meeting I knew that I didn't have to do anything but trust him!
I was found not guilty on a case that was very difficult to defend, he did everything needed to get to this verdict.

I hired Bill for representaion for a DUI apon Recomendation from someone else. From the begining til the end of the process he impressed me with his amount of knowledge and care. I was never made to feel like a criminal, and always spoken to with kindness and dignity which made me feel more than comfortable with him. When walking into court it was a stuffy and uncomfortable place, but everyone including lawyers judges and law enforcement seemed to know Bill and talk and joke around with him as if they had known him forever ,that impressed me, Bill continued my case for over a year and half before finally having it dismissed for the arresting officer not appearing multiple times. I am more than impressed with his efforts to help me, and proud to call him now a friend.. I would recomend anyone use Bill Powers .

I was arrested for DWI in March of 2010, after many hours of research and meeting (interviewing) other lawyers I decided to hire Bill. Bill impressed me from the get go he was by far the most knowledgeable about the DWI process and laws in North Carolina. After countless court appearances throughout the year my case was finally called before the judge in December of 2011, before going into the court room Bill and I discussed my case and the methods of defense he had prepared for my case. After fighting my case and defending my rights for about two hours Bill gave his closing arguments and the judge found me Not Guilty of DWI! Throughout the nine months that he was on my case Bill and his team were always professional and very quick to answer any questions I may have had. No to mention all of the word of mouth recommendations I received the biggest reasons I hired Bill were the facts the he did not want me to just plead guilty to end the case and that he said that he could not guarantee the desired result of not guilty but he would give it his all and go out fighting. That Decision to hire Bill in March proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made!

Bill is a Subject Matter Expert in his field. He is personable and patient (I can sometimes be demanding) and was proactive in working with me.
To me he has the four cornerstones of a great attorney:
1. Personable and communicates clearly with simplicity - both as a representative and in the court room
2. Subject Matter Expert in the laws around DUI
3. Knows the system and the people - this isn't his first rodeo and havingt the understsanding and relationships are key
4. Showed a true desire to help me and supported/guided me through the process

Bill Powers is the reason my case became one of the 1% cases. Everything was dropped, there was no cost of court, no fines, no probation, and most importantly NO JAIL TIME. I was devastated emotionally and did not know what to do and how to proceed beyond. Bill was great support and helped me get through the worst part of my life. He got the felony reduced to a misdemeanor. Net-net he is a wonderful person who you can rely on for support during the worst times. Bill is extremely knowledgeable in the field and helpful, he shares all the information and eventualities openly and worked in my family's best interest always. I was absolutely scared to death at the prospect of facing a DWI charge. My husband and I knew I needed an attorney, but who? Hours were spent researching for attorneys on the internet. We liked what we read about Bill Powers in reviews much like this review that you are reading now. We made an appointment and met with Bill to discuss my case. I think Bill could see that I was terrified, and he did his best to put me at ease. He was confident, but not arrogant, and obviously an authority on the subject of DWI. As he talked about the case and ways he might approach the case, we both became much more relaxed and reassured. We had an appointment with another attorney scheduled for the next day. On the way home, we cancelled that appointment; we'd found the right man for the job. One of the last things Bill told me at that first meeting was not to worry. Did I worry? A little bit, but I trusted Bill. At each court appearance, Bill walked in the court room confidently; he is completely at home and comfortable in the court room. He knows the ropes and networks; he knows the judges. It is clear that he is well-liked and respected. Many times I saw other attorneys consult with him. If you have a DWI case, especially if it is a daunting case that seems overwhelming to you, call Bill Powers. Believe him when he says these cases are not like fine wines; they do not get better with time. The process may take some time, but do not worry. He kept us apprised of developments in my case. Bill won a dismissal of the charges against me. What a relief! I gave him a big hug. Thank you for a great job! When all is said and done, I will have no record, no points on my license, and a valuable lesson learned. I can't say thank you enough. The entire operation is top-notch. Everyone we came into contact with was professional and just good people.
You can do hours of research, or you can take my word for it. Bill Powers is the best!

Calling Powers/McCartan was the smartest move I could have made. My attorney, Chas Post, did a great job of discussing my options, educating me on the process and planning out my case. He was personable, professional and very understanding of what I was going through. As a result of his excellent case management, my case was dismissed. I highly recommend you contact Chas if you find yourself in this predicament.

I went to Bill for my 3rd DUI. I was facing 1 year in jail and who knows how long without being able to drive. I was apprehensive that any lawyer would be able to help me by this point. Bill, Chas, and Michelle all just kept saying stay with it and that there is still a chance. They were totally professional and gave me the best advice of my life. We went to court with a judge that would more than likely have taken me to jail at the end of the trial, but Bill persevered on and never gave up. Within 30 minutes of the trial he had all charges dropped and has given me a 2nd chance to finally straighten up. I have unfortunately had lawyers across NC and SC, Bill Powers is the best attorney I have ever had the luck of knowing. Thank you so much!

When I was seeking an attorney a little over a year and a half ago I never realized at that time that I would develop such trust in this person nor did I realize that he would become a friend. Bill doesn't throw a lot of non-sense around....he knows what he's talking about....extremely knowledgeable especially where DWI's are concerned. My process lingered on for a year and a half as part of Bill's strategy is to have the best players so to speak in the game....the right Judge, the right District Attorney, etc. From the first day we stepped foot in the courtroom I could sense that Bill was comfortable in the areana. Best of all, I noticed how his colleagues and other "players" respected him. Why is this important? Because you are more apt to hear someone out and condsider what they are saying if you respect them. Bill is well informed with the testing that officers perform and what constitutes a pass or a fail...by the time he had finished examining the officer that arrested me, he even, I think, had the officer believing I had passed the test. With that said, he was able to do this with no disrespect to the officer. The judge , with no hesitation dismissed my case. I can not describe the panic that I was going through prior to walking in the courtroom....in fact, I had a bit of a melt down. Bill was so comforting and assured me that he wouldn't stop trying if the outcome was negative....he already was talking about plan B....mainly because the Judge we ended up with was one of the toughest and was by far not his choice.... I hope I never have to hire Bill again but I wouldn't even consider anyone else if I did need representation again. He's not the cheapest but to not have a DWI on my record and the points on my driving record that would make my insurance unaffordable...he was worth every penny. I'm a professional and single woman who is so grateful to Bill not only for his legal abilities but his compassion and empathy for me. If you are reading this then you are probably looking for someone to represent you...you don't know me but I'm asking you to trust your gut on this one....you will be relieved that you did!

He is a very intelligent and detailed lawyer. I called Bill on August 1st after I went through a checkpoint in Huntersville. I blew a .14 and had to do all of the sobirety tests. I was arrested and was let out on no bond. When I called Bill, I felt the weight lifted off my shoulders. I felt very conifdent that he would represent me the best he can. We went to trial 3 times and it was postponed for different circumstances and then we had our FINAL day in court. He stood up and fought hard for my case saying that the checkpoint was not right and several other unconstitutional things that were done. The next thing I heard is that is was DISMISSED. It was a great relief to me. Then he called us that night and told us that the DA was not going to APPEAL the case and that it is over. I screamed thank you so much. I would highly recommend Bill Powers to represent you for a DWI case.

I recently retained Mr.Powers as I was facing my fourth DUI charge and serious consequences. Mr. Powers not only worked hard for me to get the best result possible... He was able to take my case to trial and get a not guilty plea!... Along with 2 other DUI cases before mine. To anyone who is in need of representation, Bill Powers is absolutely the best of the best!

At the time of my arrest, I had been teaching for 6 years and was currently enrolled in graduate school for administration of education. Needless to say being arrested for DUI was a huge deal for me! The accusations had me fired from my summer job as a life guard as soon as they heard about it, and I was terrified of the consequences if the school district I work for found out.
This was when a friend of mine recommended Bill Powers. He said that he had run into some similar trouble and Bill had been a good guy, in getting his case dismissed. From the first time I talked with Bill he was supportive, knowledgeable, professional, and understanding. Bill calmed my fears and let me know that things were not as bad as they seemed. He provided information and recommendations for what I needed to do, and he and his associates took care of everything throughout the whole process.
The first time I spoke with Bill he said “it’s not as bad as it looks, this could be a long process similar to a roller coaster with lots of up’s and downs; but I will be honest, if you want to stick it out, from what I can see so far I think the odds favor us in this one.” Bill also promised to be completely honest with me; he said that if he felt things shifted or it was to a point where we were clearly wasting time and/or money he would be straight up and tell me. This was huge! Being a teacher I do not have the biggest salary in the city being paid to me, and I didn’t want to blow what I had chasing something that wasn’t going to happen. Thankfully for me it never got to that point.
Bill and his associates made sure to appear on my behalf for anything they could, so that I didn’t have to miss a large amount of school. Throughout the entire 19 month ordeal I missed 3 days! One day was for the original trial, and the other two were for the appeal. I was arrested in May 2009; my case went to trial in November 2009. This first trial did not go in my favor, but this was not for lack of Bill’s effort or preparation. Before I could even get up from my chair in the court room, Bill had already filed an appeal. He explained to me outside after the trial, that few cases similar to mine were won in the first trial. He explained the appeal process and what our game plan was going to be proceeding forward.
The appeals process was a waiting game, I was finally called to appear in February 2011. When we got to the court room, Bill and I sat in a conference room and reviewed our strategy. Bill explained what he was going to do, but continued to ask me things about the original incident. It was through my responses to some of his questions that ultimately provided the aspect of the case that would determine the outcome. Bill never packed it in on me! He worked up until we went into the appeal for me. After the first day of the appeal, the judge denied our first motion; but asked both prosecution and defense counselors to provide further legal research on our second motion in the appeal. This second motion was based upon the information Bill got before the first day of the appeal. When we returned for the second day of the appeals process the judge ruled that the portion of evidence which was crucial to the prosecution’s case was to be suppressed going forward.
The next step was going to be a jury trial, Bill felt extremely confident if he could argue this matter in front of a jury, without the suppressed piece of evidence we would have a real good shot! I was very encouraged and ready to wait some more for our next court appearance. But before we got out of the courtroom the prosecution dismissed the charges! It was over, after all of the accusations, waiting, uncertainty, and stress. Bill had done it!
Bill Powers saved my career as a teacher, and as an aspiring administrator. Not to mention the consequences that could have been imposed by insurance companies. I would recommend Bill Powers with zero reservation to anyone who has an inte

Bill Powers is simply the best in the business. He and his legal team assisted me with a traffic ticket recently and did so in such an easy, yet professional manner. Bill uses common language in his approach to advise on the law and provides all of the information needed to make the best decision for the client. I would highly recommend this firm.

Bill Powers proved to be an excellent attorney and backed up everything he said he would do. Most importantly for the first time ever I felt that I had someone who really cared about me and the outcome of my case. He was amazing in the courtroom...his understanding of the law and ability to communicate and address all the issues in the case that I knew where important he was right on top off. The end result was a dissmissal and a wonderful experience. I feel like Bill is a friend. Thanks a million Bill!! Sean Dwyer

After enduring the immediate repurcussions of a DWI arrest in Meckelnburg county on Super Bowl Sunday, I was scared for my future as a young sales professional. I immediately consulted a friend's father, and former judge for advice and legal defense, when I was contacted by Bill Powers, himself. Bill immediately calmed my nerves and brought me in for a consultation. Right off the bat, he was honest with me regarding the potential outcome of trying a complicated case like mine--one with a high alcohol content. (.22 to be exact). Bill's mentality to fight as opposed to laying down and pleaing, paralleled my own optimistic perspective of life in general, thus I hired him on the spot. Bill has this incredible presence of confidence and realism that say more than enough to enourage you to trust in his expertise. I consulted with my friend's father, and he too agreed Powers was a phenomenal choice. This entire year i've carried the burden of the mistake I made 9 months ago on my shoulders, and this past week, the confident bet I made on Powers was put to the ultimate test. After two continuances, my case was finally tried..and not to mention, through Bill's lunch hour!! I am still dumfounded by his poise and recognition of alternative routes to take in questioning my arresting officer. Bill's ability to think on his feet and use the law to support his every step, is unbelieveable and incredibly inspiring. His knowledge and commanding presence in the courtroom are just two factors that ultimately contributed to the dismissal of my tough case. He is a mastermind at what he does, and his confident, positive energy is truly contagious. I have Bill Powers to thank for plowing through a huge roadblock on the rest of my life!! I'd bet on Bill any day. You should too!

I had blown a .14 and was distressed about my DWI case. Bill Powers saw some immediate possibilities in attacking the case, and he seized on the state's weaknesses in a hearing in which he got the DWI thrown out because the officer lacked probable cause to stop me. In a masterful argument, he showed that the officer could not correctly gauge my speed and that he could not have had appropriate probable cause to pull me over. The judge agreed and dismissed the case. I recommend Bill Powers for EVERYONE in a bad DWI situation.

Unfortunately this was not my first Rodeo in getting pulled for a DUI in Charlotte. Before I had used the services of Bill's partner Chris McCarten and was truly impressed with the firm Bush & Powers. My original thought was if Chris works with Bill then Bill must be a stud as well.
My case was continued for quite some time but I remained calm as Bill was there to field any concerns or questions that arose throughout the process. Finally my case was heard and I was sure to face significant jail time if found guilty.
It was a World Series of DUI cases as the case laws were being thrown back and forth in a mind-numbing yet Chess-like manner. The real difference being that the State was using the computer to look up cases that Bill was simply stating from his memory. At one point, he even stated "and the prosecutor is probably looking up such and such case which doesnt apply here because of the nature of the case." And sure enough they were looking up that case that he had already dismantled and disarmed before the judge.
I told him all along that I got the best horse and intended to ride him til the end, but I truly had no idea that he was that good. Without a doubt Bill Powers is a master of his trade and it is inspiring to be near him while he practices his passion.
In the end, case dismissed and a life changing moment for my family and I. Forever grateful to Powers & McCarten.

I, of course, was extremely nervous after I received a DWI citation in Charlotte earlier this year. I had alot at stake, alot to lose all because of a ridiculous Checkpoint stop. I was only in Charlotte for one evening as I am a Florida resident, which made things even more difficult. At that moment things looked pretty bleak for me. So I knew what I had to do , I had to retain the best that Charlotte, NC had to offer, or so I was hoping for. Bill Powers was very up front with me right from the start. He listened to what I had to say and accepted the case, which eased my mind initially. It took some time and money and plenty of prayers but when the day was upon us Bill Powers took care of business!! I have to admit that I was a bit sceptical through the whole ordeal ,{ I was cited in March of 2010 and the case was dismissed in July of 2010.ATTY.POWERS HANDLED MY CASE IN UNDER 4 MONTHS !! This is extremely timely fashion for such a case in such a ridiculously strict area!!! }BILL POWERS FOUGHT FOR MY RIGHTS AND WON MY CASE QUITE IMPRESSIVELY , I MIGHT ADD!! I would recommend his services to all who need A GREAT ATTOURNEY ON THEIR SIDE!!! Thank You Atty. Powers for a job well done! Well worth my money and time.

My DUI case was very sensitive and could have cost me my career! I was recommended by 2 friends with similar successful careers that advised Bill Powers would be the best option hands down. They both told their DUI stories and how he had them both dismissed with his phenomenal tactics. How he didn’t just lie down and take some plea-bargain like most attorneys that he would fight for me. So I def took their recommendations and am very thankful that I did! I sat in this courtroom for 4 hours watching DUI case after DUI case go in front of the judge and their attorneys just pleading for some sort of jail, community service, and suspended license package. Not one attorney tried to get a fighting chance for their client and each bargain only lasted about 10 minutes. This was definitely not Bill’s style. He took 2 hours to question the DA’s witnesses and pretty much had all those agreeing w/ him that they didn’t have a reason to even arrest me. I couldn’t believe how he did it. He was polite but viscous and I loved every second of watching his talent in action! The judge was even asking the defense if he had anything to rebuttal (trying to help him) and there was nothing more to be said. The DA just kept stumbling over his words and fidgeting with papers b/c he was so perplexed and conquered by Bill’s argument. Bill was so much more educated and precise with questioning and his follow-up statement that it was like watching him conduct a symphony in the courtroom! Bill even had attorneys lined up in the courtroom to watch his craft first hand and taking notes too. Bill Powers is worth every penny I would recommend him to ANYONE in any DUI situation!

"Bill Powers." Not just one of the best lawyers in Charlotte for DWI cases but also a teacher. I'm not sure if it was divine intervention but I felt like Bill was the man for the job upon recommendation. Despite meeting with other lawyers who came highly recommended - my meeting with Bill confirmed that he was the right one. In his words - my case was "as complex as they come." Bill conveys that both himself and his staff care about serving you. In my field, we are taught to under promise and over deliver. Bill will explain the worst case scenario, offer his opinion, and battle for your rights. He has the experience, timing, and tact to put his clients at ease and get the job done. I consider him to be a renaissance man. Thanks to Bill - I feel that I have experienced a rebirth. He saved my life. I'm sure there are other good lawyers out there who could have received a similar outcome but I chose to invest in Bill and would do so again. Although our justice system is not perfect, I believe it is the best in the world. What you don't know can hurt you and Bill can help you safely navigate that abyss. I'm extremely grateful for Bill's acquiescence and support. My experience was an answer to prayer and I hope he is able to help many more people for years to come.

I came to Powers McCartan as a client because I had been charged with a DUI and I had a friend that was an attorney with them. I was thouroughly impressed with the level of service that I recieved and the amount of professionalism that my case was dealt with. Even though I had a friend on the team, my attorney, Bill Powers, took the time to review my case and diligently prepare using all the information available. In the end my case was dismissed and Mr. Powers was kind enough to review everything with me. I would highly reccommend Bill Powers and the office of Powers McCartan to anyone seeking legal advice.

Bill Powers and his team of paralegals surpassed all my expectations. We were involved in an accident and recieved four citations. I reached out to Bill for guidance, knowing that with four citations I could lose my license for two years and my insurance would increase dramatically. Quite frankly, I was scared at what the out come would be. Bill made me feel comfortable from the very start. He and his staff were quick to respond in returning phone calls and emails. Bill was able to handle of my citations off the docket. I did not have to go to court and he was able (to my amazement) have ALL four citations dismissed. Thank you and reccommendations don't seem to be enough gratitude to him for being able to take care of this. I shared this with another attorney and he was amazed that Bill was able to accomplish this. If you are in a situtation where you need legal assistance, please help yourself out by calling Bill Powers. He will be honest with you and doesn't judge you for the situation that you are in. I can't say enough good things about what he has done......Thank you Bill.

Approximately 3 years ago I was in a tight spot with the crimimal charges against me. I was overwhelmed that I was charged with them in the first place and there is not enough room in this review to to even summarize the whole situation. I felt I needed a top notch lawyer to help me with the case, and I had retained Mr. Powers for a traffic violation years earlier. When we met for the first time over this case he knew that I was emotionally a wreck about the case and he immediately put me at ease. This case was in the court system for about 2 years. Without him I would not have made it. It was physically, mentally, and emotionally draining and he was always there to answer my questions and support me. He got my charges dropped and and literally helped me through one of the hardest times in my life. He is a top notch Crimianal defense attorney!

This was my first experience dealing with a DWI and Bill Powers came highly recommended from not only his peers but assistant district attorneys I know in the state. I did my research on selecting an attorney, and his name kept coming up. Bill Powers and his law firm are very professional, relentless, maticulous and will work endless hours for you. If your career is on the line, you want him representing you. I assure you, the District attorney on your case does not want to see him representing you.

I was visiting Charlotte and got pulled over and arrested for DWI for refusing to blow. I have a very high profile name and job back in my hometown in the legal industry but I didn't know who to call in Charlotte. I started doing my research and all roads led to Bill Powers as the best around. I Could not afford to have this case on my record so I paid top dollar for a top attorney. The State had a weak case and we all knew it but they were not going to roll over. Bill took the case to trial and despite not presenting all the evidence we had Bill won my case with a Not-Guilty verdict with out a chance from the State to apeal. Although he could have gotten the case dismissed he rolled the dice and let the case go to verdict w/o any motions to dismiss. I was nervous but Bill said "trust me" and I did. He was right and I recomend you trust Bill Powers also, there is no doubt in my mind that he is the very best at what he does.

Every Attorney I spoke to, before I found Bill, wanted me to plead guilty. They all said that I didn't have much of a chance to fight it. Bill explained every part of the law and, the case that was against me, in terms that the average person could understand. When the day came for trial, he consulted me on which way he was going on defense and I trusted his judgment 100%! I was amazed at how he handled everything in court. He is definitely one of the best! I was very fortunate to find him and I highly recommend him.

Absolutely highest recommendation. Spoke with 2 other lawyers before locating him via "Super Lawyers-NC". Impressed with reviews and specialized & respected knowledge of NC law. Convinced he was the absolute best choice @ our initial consult when he provided a detailed explanation of the entire legal process as it related to our case. Perfect combination of integrity, knowledge, skill, & compassion. In the court room, impressive, skillful, argument of the issues. Case resulted in "Not Guilty" by judge. Outside court room, he really cared about us personally. He was "SUPER LAWYER" for us.

I thought I had a hopeless case of DUI and hit and run. I was ready to just plead guilty and take my punishment. I interviewed several attorneys and Bill Powers really made me feel confident that there was hope. He is very tall and has a commanding presence. I felt he would fight for me and boy, did he. His combination of knowledge, experience and boldness allowed him to recognize a situation and get my case dismissed at my very first court appearance.

I am from South Carolina and was charged at a traffic stop while on a hunting trip in North Carolina. I have never been charged with anything in my life so this was a very stressful and distressing situation. I had no idea who to call to represent me out of state. I called a highly respected attorney in my hometown in SC and he immediately recommended Bill Powers, "stating that Bill is one of the best if not the best DUI lawyers in North Carolina". When I spoke with Bill he compiled all the details from my traffic stop, clearly explained my options to me and then stated that based upon the circumstances of my case he strongly felt we could win in court. He made it clear that in court he would aggressively defend my case. In fact at the time he had recently won a case very similar to mine. In that first conversation, Bill provided clear direction, confidence and most importantly he made me feel better about myself. My case went on for over a year and I must admit that I did struggle with how far I should challenge my case. Throughout this period Bill and his paralegal assistant Michelle were extremely responsive in answering any of my questions and keeping me informed on the status of my case. After seeing Bill Powers dominating presence in court I would tell you to NEVER GIVE UP if Bill tells you that you have a case. It is very challenging to convey how impressive Bill was in court. His knowledge concerning DUI laws, traffic stop procedures and sobriety testing were amazing. He provided video of the intersection where the traffic stop had taken place, which certainly helped win my case. In fact after presenting my case, one of his peers in the courtroom actually said to him, "I was taking notes." Based upon Bill's compelling, aggressive representation, the Superior Court Judge dismissed my case. My family and I are extremely grateful to Bill . I was proud to have him as my attorney. Thank you Bill and Michelle for being there during a very stressful time in my life!

Wow! I just got my case dismissed and I am still in shock. I feel like I just won the lottery. Let me take a step back for a second...I reside in N.C. I made a huge mistake by drinking and driving. Got suspended from the Fire Dept for a year. Lost my license for that initial month. Talked to a few attorney's locally, All they kept saying was plea-bargain or lesser change. Then I was really depressed. I kept researching and watching online vids of dui defense attorney in Charlotte. I came across Bill and gave him a call. His paralegal assistant Michelle screened me a bit and later that day I got a call back. I spoke a bit about my traffic stop and then Bill started to point out things and that I do have a case. Everyone has a fighting chance because there are soo many areas of one little traffic stop that can win the case for you. You can win a case on just the littliest thing. Like an officer leaving his blue lights on while giving you the eyes follow the pen test, Or even unlevel pavement under your feet while the sobriety test is administered to you. The weather...Soo many things to take into account. Just let me tell you that Bill knows it all. He even took a video camera to the scene to film. He then used it in court which made a big impact. I went into court today..."This is almost a year later by the way"...I was sitting there thinking negative..."Im screwed...A year has gone by and if I am guilty today all the, fines, alcohol classes, community service. This is now going to kick in and life is going to suck....All I can say is try hard to stay positive. Bill told me to hang in there and never give up...He kept saying..."I want to win this". I do believe him now....Lol. It is tough to put your trust in a stranger and pay them a sum of money then roll the dice. It is not a gamble with Bill. He does seem to really care about you and is very confident that he can win your case. Of all the people in that court room today. I am pretty sure that I was the only winning case. I sure heard that word guilty a lot. Anyway, Now I can start my life over and go back to the Fire Dept. Don't have to worry about this anymore.
Thank You Soo Much Bill Powers For Everything!....

I would like to give my utmost recommendation of Bill's services to anyone charged with a DWI in North Carolina. I choose to retain him after seeing what others had to say on avvo.com and after seeing him work in court, I am glad that I trusted the recommendations of others. It was obvious that he is an extremely respected attorney in the community based on the reactions of the prosecution and court officials when they found out that he was representing me in my case. He was very polite, yet extremely viscous in proving my case. He preformed like a rock star. He took my case (which other lawyers wanted to try to plea-bargain) and got it dismissed in a very dominating fashion. He used a combination of the law, science, common-sense and his top notch skill as a trial attorney. A handful of people followed us out of the courtroom to get contact information from Bill for cases that their friends and family were involved in. Mr. Powers knows the law, and he was able to put the law to work in my favor. I found him and his staff to be extremely pleasurable to work with, and he truly does care about the people that he represents. He even gave me a ride back to my hotel because he didn't want me to waste money on a cab. If you are arrested for DWI in North Carolina you will need a high powered attorney and you would be silly not to call Bill first.

I found Bill Powers by contacting one of the most well known firms in the Charlotte area. This attorney said you have alot of different issues going on, If I personlly had these issues I would call Bill Powers. He gave me the number & said if you dont like him call me back. Within 1 hour he had contacted my attorney in another county and told them what they needed to do in order for my problems to go away. That office had never heard of the proceedure he wanted to use. When I talked to the other attorney he decribed Bill as gun hoe. Bill comunicated with my other attorney until the process was completed on thier end. The other attorneys office was very excited when things did go as Bill said they could if done properly. The other attorney laughed and said I learned a new trick. It was no trick Bill knew what he was doing and was willing to try unique angles to help me. I trusted him, at first it was scarey because the other attorneys were like ..hmmm Im not to sure about it. His staff is awsome also. I have constant contact with them. E-mail, phone, mail, even Bills cell phone he wants to know whats going on at all times and I like that. He looked me straight in the eye and said you see that pile of paper work you have, go home and put it in your bottom drawer and forget about it. Im taking care of it for you...If you need it I'll let you know. ...He is awsome!! So is his staff and I trust him 100%

I was pulled over and charged with a DUI last July. It was on sat morning. I was refered to Bill Powers by a friend. I emailed him on SUNDAY. And I had a response from Bill himself within 10 minutes. I met with Bill that week. He is very knowledgeable of all the DUI laws and I felt much better after speaking wiht him. I recently had a court date and spoke with Bill. 15 minutes later he told me he had got my case dismissed. I felt like a new person. I would refer and recommed Bill Powers to anyone who is looking for an outstanding lawyer to help them win a case.

Getting arrested for a DUI was the single worst experience of my life. The whole night I was in shock while they made me take a breathalyzer test and processed me through jail. The morning I was released I immediately went online to find a law firm to represent me. Their website was so informative and started to make me feel a little bit better. I emailed Bill directly and received a response the next day. Every time I met with him I felt like I was placing my case in someone I could trust and someone who was really going to fight for me. Needless to say, on the day of my trial, Bill represented me and put forth a solid argument. I won my case. It was the best feeling and I was so relieved. I am super grateful that I found this firm and Bill.

I got a DWI in Charlotte that could have cost me my job. He walked in the court room, worked his magic and got me off scott-free. It was apparent he is highly regarded among his peers. When we were walking out of the court room one of the prosecutors called him a miracle worker. I feel that under the specific circumstances of my case that he pulled some strings other, more inexperienced lawyers may have been unable to pull. In addition, he is a very friendly and personable fellow. I couldn't be happier with the work he did for me.

Absolutely! Bill did everything to keep his client at ease in a very stressful situation. Although he mentioned these things could go either way, once I watched him handle the trial today, he had the state on the ropes from the beginning and got the decision in our favor. It was a very precision oriented attack and am glad I had him on my team. Thanks again for helping me out of a situation
Lawyer’s Comment:
One cannot overstate the importance of treatment in certain cases. It is always an honor to help people through difficult times; yet, perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of my job is seeing lives changed for the better. The person whom wrote this post, as is often the case with MANY of my clients, holds a special place in my heart. Not everyone charged with Impaired Driving has issues with alcohol and/or drugs. Yet, when a problem exists, it is SO refreshing to see a success story. I wish I could go into more detail regarding this particular person, because WOW what an incredible person and life story!
