For an initial consultation re. my legal issues

I consulted this attorney re. legal issues that I had condensed and detailed in a typed "write-up." It listed my specific questions and it was send to him prior to our phone consultation. Initiating this call, he immediately declined to represent me and must have come to that conclusion prior to ou...r consultation. He did not even focus on my questions/legal issues, but kept repeating over & over that I was "too late" with addressing them to the court/the party in question and that "too much time" had passed. (Later I learned that the max. time allowed is 9 years and that this was within my time-frame). Asking him if he was willing to first just "write a letter" before any "legal action" he said that it would cost me thousands of dollars, never saying or allowing me to ask WHY; he was very eager to get-off the phone with me. Our interaction lasted ca. 17 min. and it left me totally flabbergasted how superficial and perfunctory my legal issues/concerns were dealt with. In his email following our consultation, he repeated again (twice) the "time factor" and admitted that he had not looked/read my "write-up." I responded saying that if this is what "Free Legal Consultations" are like, I would have been happy to PAY for one, in which all my questions would have been addressed with legal expertise. Yet, I was never given that option. Also, this would not have implied that he represents me, since I consider that his choice...just as I consider it mine, whether or not I want to hire him.

I'm sorry you were disappointed. Based on my experience I thought it was highly unlikely that I could help you and I was unwilling to charge you money to delve deeper when my experience leads me to think the money spent on me would not have produced a benefit for you. I do not like those situations because I firmly believe that we, as lawyers, need to first and foremost ensure that we make the client's life better. Merely paying a lawyer fees without getting a result does the opposite of that.

Wonderful

Mr. Cooper was great. He was very honest and upfront with the risks and cost of going to court. He seemed very ethical in not wanting to incur a financial burden for me with a less than desirable chance of winning our case. He did not rush the conversation. He was patient and let me ask questions.

Brooks is Excellent!

I was referred to Brooks by my will attorney. My husband's ex was contesting his will, then she filed a civil suit against me. I'd never been to court before or had taken a deposition. I was very naive regarding this process. I was devastated that she thought I had done something dishonest. Bro...oks was great to have on my case. He explained every step of the process and made me feel comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation. He talked to me at my level and made it easy to understand what would happen in my case-filings, timelines etc. He's professional, organized, knowledgable, and has a great sense of humor. He always tried to keep costs down where it makes sense. Email vs phone conversations as an example. The ex finally dropped the case before going to trial, after a year. This was due to Brooks persistent stating of the facts, reciting past cases, and his constant contact with opposing counsel, witnesses and depositions. I was amazed at Brooks patience with opposing counsel. Who was very unprofessional. There was never a time that I felt Brooks wasn't working on my case. He always provided updates. I would have liked to see Brooks in action in court, but so very thankful my case is over. I would highly recommmend Brooks. He'll do a great job for you.

With Gratitude- Brooks Cooper

I was referred to Brooks Cooper from a very well know and respected divorce attorney. My needs were related to an issue regarding my deceased ex-wife and her estate. The estate took over three and one half years to close to give you an idea of the mess involved. Without having Brooks Cooper in my ...corner, our daughter's needs would not only have been disregarded, but she and I would have suffered a tremendous financial hardship that would havce lasted for years. He treated our business relationship very personal and I felt like I was his only client. He doesn't have just one strength, he has many. Knowledge of the law is one thing, but being able to present it in a convincing way in a trial is a skill that very few have. Trust me when I say, I will never forget the value that Brooks Cooper brought to my life during a very difficult time!

Plaintiff Roth vs. Defendant Macomber

Ethical, reliable, trustworthy, exceptional, thorough, outstanding, direct, professional and personable are the adjectives I would use to describe Brooks Cooper. He was my attorney for one and a half years, in a very difficult case. When my husband suddenly died in 2009 I continued with his family ...law attorney. After a year with this attorney I discovered I needed a litigating attorney as well as an honest and ethical one, so I hired Mr. Cooper. I appreciated the fact that Mr. Cooper did not take advantage of my situation. His billing was fair and he kept his costs to a minimum. My court case was very complicated, at the time I hired Mr,Cooper the plaintiff had gone through five attorneys, accused me of all kinds of dishonest activities. When Brooks took over my case, he kept me focused on the facts, always researched other past court rulings and explained how they pertained to my case. He wouldn't let me get side tracked by what the plaintiff's attorney would try to throw at me, The past two plus years I have gone through hell, dealing with my husband's death, and being sued by his ex who felt she was entitled to his 401K. I contribute Brooks sense of humor, his knowledge of the law and his confidence as to what gave me hope and eventually a win. I will never be able to thank him enough for all he did, He is the best. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to win their case. Thousands of thank you's to Brooks Cooper.

"I am an Oregon City attorney handling many probate cases. Occasionally, these cases involve complex probate litigation. When that need arises, I always turn to Brooks Cooper as litigation counsel. He makes himself available to meet with me and my client in order to evaluate the merits of the case. At that meeting, he provides a straightforward evaluation of his assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the case. He will not take the case if he does not believe he can produce results. He has associated with me and handled the complex litigation portion of many cases, with proven results every time. I recommend him without reservation. Wendell L. Belknap, Attorney at Law."

He assisted me in a defense against the Oregon attorney general's overreach in an ill-founded consumer case, and his contribution was immeasurable. In a courtroom battle, he's who you want in the foxhole with you."
