I love the law, and I love helping people seek justice and closure.
An attorney since 1984, I have fought for people on cases both simple and complex. I’ve taken depositions with 42 other attorneys in the room on nationally-important cases. In Oregon, I’ve stood against a dozen defense attorneys in some of the most complex cases ever seen here. These days, I realize I’ve been reading the law longer than some of my adverse attorneys have been breathing air.
I tried to retire in 2004. I volunteered for the Audubon Society and other organizations. I returned to law school for advanced law degree and taught at the law school. Then, I decided I liked practicing law more than teaching it. So, I returned to practice.
Since 2012, I have worked as a mediator, also. Considering that most cases never make it to trial and are resolved through mediation or negotiation, my mediator work gives me insight and skills that help my law clients.
In 2016, I retired a second time. Again, after two years, the pull to helping people through litigation and negotiation was too strong, and I rebooted my law practice in 2018.
Over the decades, my civil litigation included many areas of law. This time around, I am focusing on claims against employers (discrimination / harassment / retaliation) and other lawyers (legal malpractice). I help parents sue on behalf of their children for personal injury (car wrecks, medical malpractice, school injuries) and abuse claims, which I call “Pediatric Law.” If a liquor establishment causes harm by overserving someone alcohol, I canl talk you through your options. I will sue the government and public employees for civil rights claims and to obtain public records.
I limit my practice so that I will devote the right amount of time and attention to each client.
Whether or not we work together, I wish you the best of luck with whatever problem makes you search for an attorney.

I worked with Jeff Merrick in the mid-1990s. I had many opportunities to observe his legal abilities and work ethic. And I was impressed! Mr. Merrick consistently won his cases, and was the highest earner for the law firm that employed us. Then, in 2004 I was involved in a car accident, and had...

"I first met Jeff eleven years ago. I was clerking for a judge who was mediating a very large case. Jeff represented one of the many parties in a contentious mediation. I remember that Jeff was poised, thoughtful, and deliberate, with a thorough understanding of the issues. There was no doubt he was an asset to his client. Over the years, as I embarked on my own career, I have leaned on Jeff for wisdom. His analysis, grace and calm serve as a model to me. I have absolutely no qualms about recommending Jeff."
