I met Matt Koohanim around 1 year ago when my life changed. I was not making healthy choices that led to removal from my home by court order, restraining order, loss of my children, and headed towards divorce. That’s life, I suppose. I trusted Matt because of his experience with DCFS, but more so, with how he seemed to understand people. He spoke to me countless times, especially in the beginning when my emotions were extremely high, and provided me not just legal guidance but personal direction. He never judged me, but encouraged me to take personal accountability for all my actions and all my worries over time would resolve themselves naturally. I knew Matt couldn’t stop my wife from divorcing me, but he assured me, every time I asked, I would restore and have a better relationship with my children and the restraining order would be removed. In the beginning months of my case he helped negotiate a deal with all the legal parties that protected my record and gave me a fighting chance to redeem myself and atone to the people I hurt, which in this case happened to be my family. And any time anyone tried to hurt my chances in any way, Matt made time to speak with me and then act swiftly. He knew the precise words to write in exchanges that caused immediate change in my treatment. When we met in court, Matt always kept a calm and deliberate demeanor that enabled the court to receive his motions positively. This allowed me to focus on the personal work I had to do in order to end my case. Two days ago, the court closed my case. All of my parental rights are restored, the temporary restraining order is gone, I have an even better and healthier relationship with my children, and although we are getting divorced, my wife and I are better friends than ever and are coparenting well, which is what the kids deserve. I want to express my gratitude and thanks to Matt Koohanim and his law firm for handling my case with care and honesty from start to finish. They helped me focus on making the right decisions I needed to improve my life and get through the hardest year of my life. Honestly, I am still very much just beginning my personal journey of acceptance and letting go and embracing the changes related to my past actions.
