I was recently charged with what I felt was a serious crime that could have long lasting consequences. I did not want the crime to go on my permanent record and affect future employment opportunities or graduate school application. Luckily I was able to obtain Kurt Helgesen as my attorney. This was m...y first experience in dealing with the law and the court system so I was very unsure about everything. In my initial meeting I was able to talk to Kurt about my case and what my possible options were. I immediately felt better as he explained my constitutional rights in defending myself. He told me exactly what would happen when I appeared in the courtroom before the judge so there were no surprises. This gave me comfort and confidence throughout the duration of my case. The day of my pretrial Kurt met me at the courtroom and my uneasiness that I had felt that day was calmed. All I had to do was sit and wait. Kurt was able to meet with the prosecutor and after reasoning and doing whatever lawyers do when they are hashing out deals was able to reach a very favorable outcome for me. I had originally been charged with a class B misdemeanor. It carried a maximum punishment of 6 months jail time and $1000 fine. It was knocked all the way down to a measly infraction and $100 fine! Initially the prosecutor was only willing to drop it to a class C misdemeanor but Kurt knew he could still get a better deal for me. I knew I received a good deal when the prosecutor presented the new proposed arrangement before the judge and the judge had to have the prosecutor repeat it. The judge was still struggling to see how this class B charge had been dropped to an infraction level charge and this is when Kurt stepped in again. Kurt was standing with me before the judge and asked to counsel with him, to explain why this agreement had been made. This was vital since the judge clearly explained to me that he could assign any punishment he wished, the prosecutors proposal was merely a suggestion that he, the judge, usually followed. After hearing Kurt out the judge basically went along with the proposal. I was cited for an infraction and $130 fine (the judge raised the fine $30). After paying the fine, I was home free! I don't have to worry about this stupid event in my life anymore. I would recommend Kurt Helgesen to anyone needing legal help for the first time. His ability be personable and relate to me for the unknown journey ahead was assuring. Then again I would recommend Kurt to anyone hiring a lawyer regardless of their law background because of the favorable outcome he was able to obtain for me. CASE CLOSED.
