Matthew R. Smalls, Esq. is a highly trained and well respected legal professional. In law school, Mr. Smalls was accepted as a Judicial Clerk in the Manhattan Supreme Court. He was later selected as a Legal Intern in the Major Narcotics Investigations Bureau of the Kings County District Attorney Office, as well as the Investor Protection Bureau of the Attorney General of the State of New York.
Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Smalls was one of a small number of successful applicants accepted into the prestigious Manhattan District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney under the Honorable Robert M. Morgenthau. Mr. Smalls underwent a rigorous and highly-coveted training program on New York State criminal law and procedure. After his training, Mr. Smalls was a member of the Trial Division, where he successfully prosecuted hundreds of felony and misdemeanor. He took the lead on felony trials, hearings, search warrants, and virtually every other aspect of a criminal matter.
Mr. Smalls later left the District Attorney’s Office to pursue his career as a private criminal defense attorney. Since 2007, Mr. Smalls has fought for his clients throughout New York State.
A few of Mr. Smalls’ recent cases include:
* 17 year old girl charged with Murder for shooting her alcoholic father in the head. Mr. Smalls successfully fought to have the Indictment Dismissed.
* Single mother charged with felony assault after an altercation with a police officer’s brother. After conducting an investigation and engaging in negotiations with the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, the charges were completely dismissed and sealed.
In addition to representing private clients, Mr. Smalls was retained as Special Counsel to the New York State Senate in 2009. As Special Counsel, Mr. Smalls was the lead contact for the United States government during highly-publicized investigations into political corruption in Albany. Mr. Smalls also represented notable politicians and senior staff members during the lengthy Aqueduct bid rigging investigation launched by the New York State Inspector General. None of the individuals represented by Mr. Smalls were charged with criminal wrongdoing.

"I worked closely with Matt in the DA's office when he was a young lawyer and I've had the pleasure of watching his career grow since he left. Matt is a smart, confident and effective advocate who is unafraid to try a hard case.
