Discharge Upgrade Attempt

I contacted Mr. Berens over two years ago to take on my case for an upgrade of my discharge. Two years is a long time to go through the process but it was never anything on Mr. Berens end. He was very timely in all his responses and thorough in what he needed from me and what to expect on things. ... The meticulous nature in which he put together my package was great. The outcome wasn't what I hoped for but that isn't anything to do with Mr. Berens. I had worked with another lawyer on this same issue and this was by far a better experience for me. The knowledge level and professionalism by Mr. Berens was second to none. If you are looking for someone to look at your case and see it from all sides and give you the best routes to take to maximize efforts toward a successful outcome I would recommend Mr. Berens.

You want this gentleman in your corner!!

I initially reached out to Mr. Berens when I was accused of drinking with my Soldiers while under General Order #1 in addition to my command was convinced that intercourse occurred. He provided sound advice and applied no pressure to retain him, he was more than willing to answer minor questions and ...provided some relief that things would be ok. After this situation worsened with my unit, I immediately hired his services and the battle began. I was facing a GOMOR and involuntary separation with fives years left to retirement and a flawless career. Mr. Berens dedicated every ounce of time that I needed to answer all of my questions and instill some comfort as I could possibly loose everything. The day of my separation board I would offer an image of the Battleship "U.S.S Missouri", Mr. Berens opened with a guns blazing and destroyed the prosecutors statement and lack of/no evidence. Our prep work days prior paid off huge as I beat the board and was found not guilty and retained. That day will be the 3rd biggest day of my life, and I couldn't of achieved success without Mike Berens. This man is solid, professional, extremely diligent in researching and understanding your situation and most of all he understands the military life as he wears the uniform himself. Don't bother looking elsewear, you want this guy in your corner.

Above and beyond!

I am active duty, but I hired Mr. Berens for a civilian case. During the entire process he kept me aware of what was going on and the potential outcomes of each situation with genuine concern for me and my case. He was always approachable for any little question or concern I had (and there were a lot... of them with my career on the line). Throughout this ordeal, he also handled my chain of command, kept them calm, and played a huge part in preventing a knee jerk reaction to throw the book at me. I would recommend him to anyone that needs a criminal attorney.

Pamela Mcpherson's Review

Michael was very thorough in his investigations regarding my case. He even visited the scene of the infraction/crime twice and took pictures as proof of damage unchanged. He was very informative on explaining what need to be done. He was very courteous to the judge and myself at all times. I could no...t have had my positive outcome without his expertise. I am truly grateful. Pamela 3/11/27

Mike Berens is a truly exceptional lawyer.

My daughter is a 9 year veteran of the US Air Force who found herself due to a series of unfortunate circumstances facing a courts martial proceeding with a likely outcome of a felony conviction, confinement and a bad conduct discharge at a minimum. She was assigned a defense counsel whom to put i...t bluntly was a waste of her time. After almost every consultation my daughter was left in tears. It appeared to us that all he was doing was negotiating with the prosecutors office and was only offering her what he was being given, i.e. Plead guilty and maybe they will be lenient. After watching my daughter being bullied by the very system my wife and I had both faithfully and honorably served we had had enough. I started researching attorneys intending to retain outside counsel and found Mike Berens. Mikes resume and credentials are impressive enough but along with that the fact he is a Air Force veteran with JAG expierence and the large number of reviews by other military members he has aided clinched it for our family. We contacted Mike initially by email and he responded within the hour asking for some basic info and set up a meeting within a day or two. At the initial meeting my daughter and I found Mike to be cordial, interested in getting to know us and he was perturbed to hear the details as to how our daughter had been representated to this point. Mike was refreshingly honest on what he thought he could do for her and straightforward about costs and possible outcomes. Mike took her case and went to work immediately. What I particularly was impressed with was his almost immediate response to any question from myself or my daughter. Mike never failed to respond to either of us within minutes If only to acknowledge and say he would contact us further if he was tied up, a quality I really appreciate. Mike was also able give my daughter something else her previous counsel never was able to, hope, when things were at there worst Mike was always in contact and gave us the feeling that we would prevail. Mike Berens attention to detail carried the day for my daughter. He tirelessly went over all the evidence, followed up with witnesses and spent the time to thoroughly know her case. The final outcome was a package requesting discharge in lieu of courts martial approved by all base and wing clients and numbered AF Commanding General. No felony conviction, no confinement and a discharge with all her veterans benefits. I shared with Mike at our last meeting my long held feelings about lawyers and the legal justice system. In short, I had lost trust in it and the lawyers who practice the law. In my daughters case it was a blatant example of overreach. Multiple overlapping charges just to see what they could make stick. Mike saw through all of that and basically told them that they were going to have to prove each and every item they were charging and I am positive they took a hard look and decided that they couldn't do it? In closing, I would highly recommend if you or someone you care for find yourself facing a situation like our family did you could do no better than put your trust in Mike Berens It is my true pleasure to recommend Mike without reservation

"Mike is the right kind of lawyer. He is smart, he is thoughtful and deliberate, he is reasonable and fair. I first met Mike when I was legal advisor (judge) on a discharge board and he was the recorder (prosecutor). I was so impressed by his work that when he became available for hire I was very happy he chose the Washington Air National Guard. We now have him part time where he runs the legal office for a large diverse wing. As the HQ JAG I am very confident legal services at the wing are well managed under Mike’s careful, focused eye. You can’t go wrong with Mike."
