Chance Xcaliber Oberstein

I had already filed for my 17b and expungement in pro per, but I felt the need for someone with the legal knowledge to petition for a Certificate of Rehabilitation; particularly for one who, despite the expunge, was still required to register pursuant to PC290. I retained Chance Oberstein to help me ...with the CoR process because of his knowledge of the law. He knew precisely what I was feeling because, he, too, experienced it as a defendant. I don't find this to be a negative. People make mistakes and learn from it. Knowing his background, I felt I would be in good hands. He was very upfront and honest about my chances of getting a CoR granted. Sometimes you don't like to hear it, but it's good to know what you're up against. His explanations and reasons for his strategy and the court's expectations were clear. That I live in Northern California was not an issue for him, either. He was there to represent me in court. I also appreciate his show of empathy as he was guiding me through the process. It was emotionally draining for me particularly the night before the hearing. His phone call helped me rest easy. I am happy to report that the judge granted my CoR, and I have been relieved of the duty register. I am forever thankful for Chance and his commitment to me as his client.

I hired Chance for my son’s probation violation and he successfully saved him and got him home again. I have never met an attorney who is more caring, compassionate, and diligent as Chance. Having a sex offense already has you pinned behind a rock and hard place. I had tried to reduce my charge to a misdemeanor with a different lawyer many years ago, but probation and the DA did not merit it. I was lost until I was referred to Mr. Oberstein. Mr. Oberstein was very sympathetic with ...my plight and took on my case despite the uphill battle that lay before us. He was very up front and laid out all the possibilities, including not getting the decision that we both would like. It took a lot of planning and patience to prepare for my case. Mr. Oberstein was able to provide a plethora of legal statutory support for all what the court would have thrown out or not acknowledge and he did it with a calm decorum during the court session. That display reminded me of a cliche, "A good attorney knows the law; a great attorney knows the judge." I am afraid of being at court, but Mr. Oberstein kept me afloat. Mr. Oberstein reminded me of what was laid out and how the chances have improved since the first time I tried, but also reminded me there is no guarantee. In the end, the judge reduced my charge to a misdemeanor. I was and am still in shock at the decision because the success rate for my type of case is not great. There is so much gratitude that I owe to Mr. Oberstein and his tactful planning. Although reducing a charge to a misdemeanor is a small hill to many, to a person with a post-conviction sex crime, this is a significant mountain to overcome. It signifies that the State of California believes in your efforts of rehabilitation to grant the reduction. Mr. Oberstein has given me a strong foundation for the next step in my post-conviction strive to regain my life and I thank God for blessing me with Mr. Oberstein's help.

Chance is a consummate professional with a flexibility of thought, and a true passion for his profession. He saved my bacon with a biased-judge, and I was able to walk out that day. I would hire Chance again, and hope to do so so I can get my life back. He is easily available over email, phone and... text. He is patient and most importantly, does not speak any BS. I applaud his honesty and hard work.
