I have been living abroad legally for years and to my surprise when I went to renew my US passport, I was told there was a federal warrant for my arrest due to my "failure" to register. I thought I had taken all the proper steps to leave the registry when I left the US and was never told I had to ta...ke additional steps before leaving. However I still couldn't sleep knowing I technically may have been in the wrong in the government's eyes.
