also known as “Dan”
I am a Certified Family Law Specialist and represent clients in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and select matters in the Central Coast and Sacramento area. I work with clients of all background, including business owners, homemakers, those with 7/8 figure wealth, attorneys, doctors, therapists, teachers, and military servicemembers and veterans. I also work with forensic accountants, therapists, mediators, loan officers, real estate agents, and attorneys in other fields to holistically resolve your family law issues. I have a lot of experience in high conflict custody matters, including domestic and international move away, domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental health issues. While I litigate, I settle many of my cases because I maintain good relationships with my fellow family law attorneys, the Court, and other professionals, and work hard to know the facts of your matter so I can quickly work to resolve the matter with your partner/spouse. I strongly believe in the principal of informed consent. You will know where you stand and what decisions you can make so you can make the best choice for yourself and your family.
I love the practice of family law. I know it's an unwanted service, but one that is necessary. People often come to me when they have been victims of abuse, made personal mistakes that have caused an end of a marriage or relationship, or simply have grown apart. It's hard for many people to let go of the past and the end of the relationship and move forward. That is why I work with a variety of family law related experts (financial planners, forensic accountants, life coaches, real estate professionals and therapists) to help you divide assets, heal, and take control of your future and the legacy you want to leave your loved ones.
In my spare time, I enjoy the beach, cooking, hiking, reading, travel, and writing.
4/14/26: Recent Lessons Learned:
1) I recently had a WhatsApp conference call with someone who lives abroad and owns a home here in California. While he has reached an agreement to sell the property, the client was made aware of a tenant living in the home. With high living costs, it's not unusual for the other spouse living in the home to rent a room to a tenant to earn some rental income. Usually with room rentals, too often there are no rental agreements reached.
When you try to sell the home, the tenant remaining in the home retains rights to living in the home. I have had several homes have a delayed listing because one of the homeowners decided to bring in a tenant. Listing agents do not like tenants because buyers agent's see them as a potential legal problem. Why? Because they need to be provided a formal notice of termination (typically 60 days), and if they do not comply, require a formal eviction which can takes months to resolve with the courts.
If you are considering a tenant to pay for bills, please be careful, and if you are thinking of selling the home, please notify the tenant to move far sooner than the intended sales date. This has been a problem that I have dealt with too often lately.
2) Divorce coaches are very helpful to me, in particular for my female clients. Divorce coaches assist attorneys by managing the emotional, organizational, and communication aspects of a case, which helps me to focus on the legal stuff while the emotional and organizational issues of the case are handled by someone that is better suited for that work than me. I find that some litigation is avoided with the assistanceo of divorce coaching because my clients effective communication with the co-parent and other experts, my clients are better prepared for meetings. This ends up reducing their legal fees because these tasks are delegated to the divorce coach. Divorce coaches make for mentally healthy divorce outcomes, more efficient workflow, and save time and money overall.
3) This year, I have read a book every month, and this has proven valuable for me. The Martian, Artemis (Andy Weir novel's), The Widow (John Grisham), and finishing Lightbreakers from Aja Gabel this week (almost done). After I read each book, I spend some time thinking deeply about what I learned about humanity and what I can take from each story. The Martian? One astronaunt's desire to survive and the sacrifice of his team going back to Mars for him. Such teamwork, such ingenuity. Artemis? How our fractured society follows a large colony to the Moon. Crime and the consequences of crime. The Widow? That greed follows money and causes people to do things they would not normally do, even lawyers, and that juries can make mistakes with their verdicts. Lightbreakers? Such a moving book about the exploration of grief, loss, love, how people handle grief differently, and time travel to those memories. The ways the past echoes endlessly in the present and into the future, and how the past causes you to want to be with the ones you love, and what that can cost you. All great novels! Reading helps me with work, and keep my mind fresh.
4/17/26: It Matters Greatly To Gain Respect From Your Judge:
This has been a very busy week. I recently completed a long trial, and we were able to mostly settle the matter. The Court would frequently encourage the parties to settle, and specifically mentioned the way I was handling the trial and called me pleasure to work with despite the difficult subject matter. It went a long way to easing the tension of the case so that we could resolve as many of the issues as possible. There was no shouting, no arugments, no disrespect. Just efficiency, being straightforward with the client, and respectful to the bench and everyone involved. How you work a case matters. Next? Going to finish Lightbreakers. Have a good weekend!
4/19/26: Lightbreakers: An Exploration of Quantum Physics, Love, Loss, and Finding a Way to Live:
Lightbreakers is a novel about a scientist that finds himself continuously lost in the pain of the death of his 3-year-old daughter who died of a health condition he didn't know about. This causes a ripple effect in his life, he gets divorced, then remarries, but still feels a void from the death of his daughter and later takes a job with a secret company that has technology that allows him to go back in time. It's a book about how our consciousness in quantum physics can travel back in time from our memories. For him, he naturally wants to go back in time to try to prevent his daughter's death. He visits her. He gets lost in his grief again, and gets his ex-spouse to visit the child, and his wife. He nearly loses himself trying to re-save her. However, instead of saving her, he becomes more concerned about the company's ability to use the technology to change history at large, and destroys the machine used to take his consciousness back in time. Think of Back in the Future II, and how going back in time can change the future.
It's a pretty good book. The ending was not as strong as it could have been. It really tried to tie together science with our emotions. Our need to closure and how we constantly go back to our most important memories. Everyone goes back to their most important memories. Graduation. Birth of children, committing to someone, to the traumatic ones where you find out someone you loved died, a breakup, etc. Another theory of the book is that people don't really let go, because memories always remain. I agree with that. People do not let go. They just keep going and live with the good, bad, and trauma. We call it "letting go" to make ourselves feel good. But in reality, we don't. We are just live. I agree with that part. But not wanting to tell your former self or someone in that time what hidden heart disorder your 3-year-old child had? I can't believe that I wouldn't want to do that. Everyone would want that. I can think of many things you would want to change in the past. Telling a friend, you knew that was going to die in a car crash to avoid that intersection. Or, the last evening you were with someone, and they were lying to you about everything, but you were too afraid to call them out on it and broke up with them by text the next day instead of talking through it. Telling yourself to study harder for a test. Telling your child, you love them instead of berating them for failing an exam. A lot of reasons to go back in time, if you could.
Quantum physics is a very deep, interesting area of science. There is research out now that suggests that our consciousness outlives our body. That what goes in black holes (Lightbreakers) goes into another a dimension (white hole). There is so much we do not know about the world. I would have written the book differently. Save your daughter, save your friend, talk to your partner about why she lied and fix it instead of running away, and be better to your kids. Then destroy the machine! That isn't going to change who is president or the world at large. 3.5 our 5 rating.
