Horrible experience

If you were thinking of hiring Brett Wishart as your divorce attorney, I have one word of advice for you – RUN! My daughter hired him in part because he indicated that he would quickly ask for spousal support because of the disparity in income between her and her husband. Several months later, he had... done little to progress her case. He certainly hadn't started the ball rolling for spousal support. In my opinion (and later confirmed by him), this was because he took on far more work than he could responsibly take care of, indicating that he’s more interested in his income than his clients’ welfare. To make matters worse, when work was finally started, Brett’s legal assistant/secretary (Holly) created most of the documents for the case. While this might not be a problem in the abstract, in this case there was absolutely no oversight by the attorney. The typical scenario here was that we would send information into Brett's office as requested. Holly would then draft a response and send it to us. The response invariably was incorrect and completely ignored anything we had sent earlier. We would then draft a correction, send it to Holly, and then get another (often incorrect) response. The kicker is that we were charged for Holly and/or Brett to “read” the email with the original information, charged for Holly’s time creating the incorrect response, charged again for her to read our correction of her response, and then charged again for what would hopefully be correct next time! We were also charged for the time it took Holly to listen to voicemails of my daughter trying to get an appointment with Brett! All of this can be substantiated with emails etc. When my daughter finally did get an appointment to see him face-to-face and gave him all of the information, he said it was like “drinking from a fire hose.“ It would not have seemed like such a huge volume of information if he had indeed read any of her emails (instead of only charging to "read" them), since all of this information had been previously transmitted! And of course, we were then charged for the face-to-face meeting in which my daughter reiterated the information previously sent to Brett but he had not actually read. Moreover, the bills were devoid of substantive information (e.g., charging half an hour to "read correspondence" when it was only a 2-line email). I don’t know if this office is incompetent or deliberately padding their bills by doing incorrect work that then needs to be fixed. I have never seen a situation where an attorney took such financial and emotional advantage of a client at such a difficult time. Any accolades are completely unfounded. In order to be fair, I gave Brett 2 weeks to respond to this note but have received nothing. Not even an acknowledgement of receipt. Steer clear of this one.

As admitted by the author of this review, I did not represent her. I have not met or spoken with her. The allegations made are not based on any firsthand knowledge or experience. In Court, such claims are routinely excluded from evidence as “hearsay” or "lacking in foundation" and are considered inherently unreliable. Nevertheless, I deeply regret that the author of this review is so upset. Under the best of circumstances, the process of a contested divorce is often slow and expensive. Some feel their attorney is to blame and it is common for counsel to be changed more than once before final conclusion of a case. Less often, it is the attorney, not the client, who seeks to end the representation. I can count on one hand the number of times I have had to petition the Court to withdraw from a case in my 20 years in the business. This was one of those cases where I had to file a formal motion requesting to be relieved as counsel due to a complete and irremediable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship. Attempts were made to resolve the breakdown, but in the end it could not be fixed. Had any of the things she claims about me been true, I would have been fired, not the other way around.

Great Experience and Outcome

Look no further, this is your guy! I started my divorce process with a different lawyer. A month in, my wife hit me with domestic violence claims where I lost all access to my children for three months, it was horrific and terrifying. My lawyer at the time gave me no confidence she could beat the ...claims. Then I met Brett, right off the bat, he reviewed my case and instilled confidence that we could win. He immediately changed our defense strategy to a more streamlined, cost-effective approach and we won! Although it took 6 months to beat the DV, I went from not contact with my children and being painted as monster to 50/50 custody. Further, as we completed the DV, Brett stuck by me to finish out the rest of the process ensuring not only that we finalized 50/50 custody, but that I got to keep my house. Throughout the process, Brett's team was attentive, compassionate, and epithetic, I couldn't imagine where my life would be today without them.

Truly a wonder and joy to work with

In my case, my ex is extremely contentious... her side would have attorney drafted letters written on every little thing. Brett is no only patient, creative, but deals with opposing counsel with extreme professionalism. He knows when to "attack" and when to consolidate and cut your losses. I...f you want an attorney who is efficient, poignant, communicates so well that you always know where you're currently at in your case and where you need to be not only next, but 3 moves ahead, Brett is your guy. Do not hesitate, he's worth every penny and some.

Moreover, he is very reputable and not underhanded in ways that end up causing his clients (or mine) to spend unnecessary legal fees. He has the ability to both advocate for his client's interests and still work reasonably with opposing counsel. Brett is a definite asset to our profession."
