I am a trial lawyer first, and I look for reasons why a case shouldn't go to trial instead of how to get you to accept a bad deal that you don't want.

Domestic Violence 25%

The system makes it too easy for people to plead guilty in these cases, and you need someone who loves to try cases and win. I am a trial lawyer first, and a negotiator second.

Divorce and Separation 20%

I am an active, aggressive lawyer who wants to see healthy families, and who wants to see families that see each other. Huge financial and emotional issues aside, this is about the kids. Whatever they suffer in this process is passed on for generations.

Slip and Fall Accident 15%

This is an area of the law where an injured person needs a lawyer because insurance companies and juries don't want to pay someone who fell down and got injured. I suggest a trial lawyer with an understanding of the mechanics of how people get hurt when they slip.

Abandons and ignores clients. Is disrespectful, incompetent, inconsiderate and unprofessional.

Shaun Kaufman is the worst attorney I have ever worked with. I have worked with around 40 attorneys over the years in various segments of law. Shaun Kaufman took my money and then ignored me. He missed appointments, would not return phone calls and ignored emails and text messages. Weeks would g...o by and I wouldn't hear from him, even though I had left messages asking him to contact me. About a month after I hired him I felt needed to interview other attorneys to replace him because Shaun Kaufman was missing in action and seemed to have taken my money and run. I interviewsed several attorneys and it quickly became apparent that Shaun is very unprofessional and inept compared to other attorneys. Several of the more qualified attorneys charged a flat rate for the case that was less than Shaun's retainer. It also sounds like many of the things Shaun was planning to do in court would not have held up or additional work was needed to enter things like emails into the court proceedings. Shaun did not appear to know or understand what was needed to defend my case. Then right before I was going to hire an attorney to replace Shaun Kaufman, I received a text message where he claimed a deal was reached with the other attorney. Because of that I held off on replacing him. Then several weeks went by and Shaun Kaufman seemed to be doing little to nothing, and he didn't return my calls, was missing appointments and not doing what he promised to do. Then 2 days before the hearing the deal with the other attorney fell through. Then we had only 2 days to prepare for the hearing and it appeared Shaun was doing nothing to prepare. I expressed my concern about the lack of work or preparation that was done and he told me to “calm down and wait a day to call him” and then he hung up the phone on me. Then one day before the hearing Shaun texted me and informed me he was withdrawing from my case. He told me my case would automatically get continued and I didn't need to go to court (and I really did need to go to court – I glad I didn't listen to him). He never returned some papers he had for my case (even the I asked him repeatedly to do this) and so it was more difficult for the next attorney not having the documents we needed. This guy claims to be a “Compassionate Attorney” and nothing could be further from the truth. He seems confident and attentive before you pay him, but then as soon as he gets your retainer you don't hear from him and little work is done. Avoid this guy. He wastes your time and your money. He will create a lot of stress and turmoil in your life. It takes him 3 times longer to accomplish things compared to other attorneys and the little work that gets done is inferior work. Shaun had his license taken away in 2003. I looked at the disciplinary actions taken on Coloraodosupreamcourt website and saw that I experienced many of the problems that people complained about in 2003

He handled my messy divorce with insight & compassion

Another attorney recommended Shaun Kaufman to me when I knew I was facing a divorce. Just like the other lawyer said, I found Shaun to be smart, always willing to lend an ear & offered excellent advice. I was very nervous because I have two children and was very worried about their wellbeing. The di...vorce proceedings took almost 6 months and during that entire time Shaun guided me through some awful rough waters. Never once during this time did he let me down. I could always call with questions and he would take the time to explain things. One thing I really appreciated was how steady he was even when I knew my ex's lawyer was being pretty awful. Never once did I hear Shaun talk badly about anyone else, even that other lawyer. I ended up with a very good settlement.

He Finished My Case Right

I've never written an online review, but I felt the need to share the positive experience I had this past spring with Shaun Kaufman Law. Shaun and his investigator stepped into my case which had been threatened by a previous, inexperienced family friend who's a lawyer. My case was set for trial just... weeks after the previous lawyer withdrew. I was in a bind, and to be honest, I was scared. A friend who's a court clerk suggested I contact Shaun Kaufman because she had observed first hand his adept and qualified handling of various cases in her courtroom. Shaun immediately took action on my case. He met with witnesses, he forwarded their statements to the D.A.'s office, and met with the D.A. twice before my case was settled without conviction and without jail. I can't tell you how appreciative I am for his help. Because of him, I got my life back and I was at home for my daughter's 5th birthday party. I have a deferred sentence in a case where everyone expected me (and told me!) I would go to jail. Because of Shaun Kaufman, I didn't.

Inadequate representation

Mr. Kaufman is personable- it was this characteristic that differentiated him from the other attorneys that I was considering for a restraining order hearing. He was friendly and inspired confidence and optimism. He was communicative and showed a clear interest in keeping billable activities to a min...imum. He conducts his own business with a PI operation on the side. No office location was established; it appears that he works out of his home with his wife/business partner. He asked that payment be made by credit card over the phone with his wife. He presented a logical strategy for the case. I decided to dismiss him based on his conduct at the hearing. He did not seem to be prepared for the defense, and was clearly taken by surprise when confronted with the plaintiff's case. His lack of professionalism was disappointing. He chatted in the corridor of the building casually with another unknown attorney about his ostentatious pink tie. He used his laptop, which was covered with grass and wisps of plant matter, in the courtroom. He said that he had been working outside all morning. He opened and closed general files on the computer without any apparent organization or purpose. He said that the judge told him to "stop smirking" and he seemed more concerned about taking care of his dogs during the two hour hearing than using all the evidence that I had provided. His excuse later on was that the plaintiff's case had prejudiced the judge to the point that nothing would have changed the outcome. I went to jail for the weekend because of a sealed arrest warrant. Multiple attempts to contact him by phone during my detainment were unsuccessful. He came to visit me on a Sunday afternoon and we discussed the next steps in the case. A bond hearing was set for Monday morning, and another hearing was set for Monday afternoon. Mr. Kaufman was not present as expected for the Monday morning hearing and the afternoon hearing was canceled. He assisted family members arrange bond only after being alerted by them about the changes.
