STRAIGHT-UP, STRAIGHT-FORWARD LEGAL ADVICE GETS BUSINESS DONE!

Although not born in Saint Louis, I’ve lived here for forty years, and consider myself a Saint Louisan.  I’m a graduate of Washington University–Olin School of Business, and Saint Louis University – School of Law.  And in case you, too, are a Saint Louisan, I graduated from Parkway Central Senior High School.

Unlike most of my contemporaries, I did not go directly to law school upon graduating from college.  I spent five years as an Engineer Planner at McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), managing multimillion-dollar engineering development programs for the United States military and its allies.  Complying with the demanding requirements of government requests for proposals and contractual reporting more than prepared me for the rigors of the law.  It helped me to hone the business sense to not merely identify potential problems/roadblocks, but to actually craft effective solutions, which is precisely how BUSINESS gets done.

Trial Lawyer Experience

I began my legal career as a trial attorney at sizable firms, including one of the oldest insurance defense firms in Saint Louis, as well as the local office of a large international firm out of Chicago.  While there, I engaged in every aspect of litigation, from Pre-Trial Discovery and Dispositive Motion practice up to and including First Chair Jury Trials and Appellate Argument before the Missouri and Federal Courts of Appeal.

Business-Oriented Practice

While initially a litigator, I have spent most of my twenty plus years practicing law representing businesses, large and small.  Due to my business background, I deliberately transitioned to representing businesses, particularly in regard to employment and contractual matters.  In so doing, I’ve assisted businesses from small start-ups to large regional enterprises and Fortune 500 companies including:

3M, American Airlines, American Red Cross, AT&T, Boeing, Boy Scouts of America, CIGNA, Dierberg’s, Dr Pepper/7 Up, Edward Jones, EMC Corp, FedEx, Frito-Lay, Hallmark, JB Hunt, JPMorgan Chase, LabCorp, Marriott Int’l, PPG, Starbucks, Truman Medical Center, Unilever, UnitedHealth, Walmart, Walgreens, Waste Mgt and YMCA.

Through Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Rating™ my fellow lawyers have assigned me a 5.0 out of 5.0 AV Preeminent Rating – the highest rating available.  After all, that is how BUSINESS gets done!

A frank opinion
Robert spoke on the phone with me and was able to point me in the right direction - even though it wasn't with his firm. I really appreciate an attorney who is honest that they can't help - it's a sign of someone I can trust. I will make him my first call if I have other Missouri business questions.

Great advice and peace of mind
Mr. Pennell is very helpful. We asked him to look at a contract and he brought up several similar cases and explained to us the problems with the contract. He did not rush us and answered all of our questions to full satisfaction.

I like the fact the he takes the time to look at your case even if he knew that he wouldn't be on it. He's very helpful and made things simple for me to understand. I would defenatily hire him if I needed a lawyer.

Robert Pennell Review
I work for a hospital and we use Equifax for our unemployment claims. Mr. Pennell is the legal rep of our choice as we feel he does a fantastic job with any hearings that come up. He is very efficient in making sure we get everything we need for a hearing. Because of the tremendous help from him, we have managed to win many of our cases. We don't always win them, but it is not due to anything Mr. Pennell has done wrong. Some cases cannot be won due to the nature of the case. I have requested Mr. Pennell as our legal rep of choice.

Great to Respond promptly
Wrote a concern in regards to refuse to employment performance review. He responded promptly even to the clarification in what specific concern I wanted addressed. Did very well to inform me of the employment laws. I would recommend this attorney for future legal employment concerns.

Rude and condescening
I asked a simple question here, he provided an answer, then proceeded to add non-essential, rude and condescending comments.
Response from Robert Pennell November 3, 2021
Based upon your review, it appears that you are upset with an answer that I provided to a question you posed on the Avvo forum. I answer a lot of questions on the panel with the intent to help inform laypeople. It is never my intent to be rude or condescending. As your review provided no particulars, I have gone through the questions that I recently answered to locate the response to which you are referring. In so doing, I have identified an answer to the question How Long Can an Employer Leave Me on Unpaid Leave? First, allow me to apologize, as in rereading it, that answer did come across as snippy, which was not my intent. I answered it late at night from my phone when I was tired and failed to look it over before posting it. Assuming that's the question, I simply didn't understand your integrity/moral quandary. My comments were not intended as a criticism. There's no question that the final sentence came across differently than I intended. I wanted to make sure that you understood that you would not be entitled to unemployment benefits under those circumstances. At the time, I thought it was clever, but in rereading it, I unquestionably came across far less clever and far more like a smart ass. Again, I apologize and will try to avoid answering questions late at night when I'm tired and not at my best. Thank you for the reminder.

Wouldn’t Bother
Upon contacting Rob about my case he seemed really polite, professional & willing to help. But as time went on he seemed to have a “I don’t care” attitude. Almost every piece of information I received about my case I had to contact him multiple times to get in which everytime he seemed annoyed. Every week he would tell me he is going to work on something and by the end of the week there was no progress and just a bland “I’ll try and get to it Monday”. Come Monday it’s “Ive been very busy I will get to it tomorrow” and by the end of the week it’s the same stale excuse from last Friday “I’ll get to it Monday”. It takes him 2+ weeks just to make simple phone calls and some things he said he would do, he never did. It seemed as though he thought my whole ordeal was stupid and a waste of his time in which I couldn’t help wonder why he decided to take my case in the first place. He even said at one time “all this over a car?”...frankly I don’t care if it’s over a used hanker-chief, if i contact you about a situation I need handled, and you agree to take my case and I pay you MY money then I would expect a you as a lawyer to treat it like any other “high priority” case you have. At the end of it all there still was little progress and I had to handle the situation myself with the help of another lawyer. If you have a case in which you are eager to get solved, would like respectable communication from your lawyer and don’t wanna feel like a bother...I wouldn’t recommend Rob.

Response from Robert Pennell December 14, 2018
I'm pleased to hear that you got this addressed to your satisfaction even if I was unable to do so. I regret that I didn't meet your needs but must point out a clarification. You paid me to draft a letter which I did but you were not initially able to provide me with an address to which to send it. As a result I used the phone number that you provided to try and convey what was outlined in the letter. As you well know, this individual was very difficult and refused to even listen much less understand. At that point you decided to pursue filing suit against this person and I attempted to assist you. I did not ask for any further compensation but prepared to draft a Missouri Merchandising Practices Act (MMPA) lawsuit to file on your behalf. I'll readily admit that I did not do so as promptly as either of us would have liked but I had never filed a MMPA lawsuit before. I am not a consumer lawyer and have never represented myself as such. In retrospect, I should have simply told you that I could not assist you any further but I felt badly for you and your situation.
