Biography
I've been practicing law since November 1, 1983. Upon finishing law school at the University of Akron, I opened two offices in Portage County, Ohio. In 1984, I moved to Lancaster, Ohio, in Fairfield County, and worked as a branch office manager for a Columbus firm until 2005. In September 2005, I went back out on my own and intend to remain on my own. Although the Law Office of Lee A Thompson is a general practice firm, my primary emphasis has been and remains divorce, custody, family law, social security, workers' compensation, and estates.
In November 2022, I returned to my roots in Mantua, Ohio, to serve the folks of Portage County again but still maintain a presence in Fairfield County. My areas of practice remain the same, but I've changed my free structure to provide mostly flat services and more limited-scope representation. More info can be found on my website,
Attorneys often get a bad rap from the public; we only care about ourselves. I give my clients 100% and always try to be honest with them and, really, with myself. I love what I do and always hope I maintain the professionalism my clients deserve and the profession needs.
Throughout my life, mainly through the influence of my parents, I've spent a great deal of time in the mountains, primarily hiking throughout the United States. Rock climbing was a passion, but at my age, it is not something I'm actively involved in now. I'm married to Dawn, and between us, we have four children: Krystal, Arianna, Alex, and Anna. We have two cats, Flossie & Charlie.

Questions on a possible divorce.
I had several questions on a divorce after a long term marriage. Lee answered them fully and brought some things up I did not think of such as Social Security and taxes. We had friends who used 1 attorney for their divorce where Lee said that is not a good idea. Lee answered my questions fully a...

Replied last March 29, 2016It would be so nice if people put a first name on here so I could thank them personally. I do however think I remember because there is enough information for me to piece this one together. I'm glad I was helpful to you and remain available to answer any further questions you may have. Because we talked about it, this is not really necessary but for others, always remember, an attorney can only represent one person. So, if you do a dissolution and only one attorney is involved, which is many times the case, if that attorney is down as representing your spouse, that attorney can only look out for the best interests of the person he/she represents. Before signing papers, you can always go to an attorney to review papers that have been drafted for you, and you should do this, to sign to make sure those papers state what you believe the agreement really is supposed to say. Generally, you are not going to get a second chance. Thanks so much for the kind review.

Replied last February 25, 2016Earl, always nice to hear from a former high school classmate. It's not that I don't get involved in personal injury, it's that this calls for someone somewhat specialized. As much as I hate to say this about myself here, it would not be an area I would not feel competent in. That's the last thing you need. The other issue was intriguing, but being almost 200 miles away, I gave you the name of attorney in the area I hope can at least figure it out. It makes little sense to me. Replied last December 04, 2015Cathy, First and foremost, let me thank you for the kind review and giving me the opportunity to work with you on this. By the way, I'll try to break this into paragraphs but I'm not sure it allows me to do so on responses. Second, you're case was one of the most satisfying, if not the most satisfying, cases, I've worked on over the years. It presented unique legal issues as far as evidence, but we overcame those. Because it was so unusual and reported somewhere, I received calls from people and attorneys around the United States in similar situations. And yes, it was a long case but in a sense a series of cases. We were in domestic court, probate court and even the court of appeals on another unique issue where the trial court allowed evidence by us that really never happens. That particular issue and the outcome came up in a cited case at a seminar Iwent too. It was interesting because one of the attorneys, the main one, on the other side was at the same seminar. By the way, no one at the seminar seemed to agree with our position but, the court of appeals did and that's really all that matters. That was before the final custody hearing during our six plus hour contempt filed against you. Winning that hearing actually won the custody case. While you may have at times been at times the “calmest” client, it was really your input during court that made the case one with a successful outcome. I learned a great deal about things I never knew. That always makes a case more interesting. Thanks much, Lee
