    44 years

Since graduating from the University of Tennessee Law School in 1980, I have worked diligently to establish myself nationally as an authority on the intricacies of DUI law.  My background in the sciences gave me a unique perspective in defending those accused of DUI.  I have successfully represented over two thousand clients charged with DUI.  In 2006, I became the first DUI lawyer in Tennessee to be recognized by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization as a certified specialist in the area of DUI Defense law.

I am the author of the state treatise entitled, "DUI: The Crimes & Consequences in Tennessee"; and since 2003, have been the co-author of the national treatise "Drunk Driving Defense" with Lawrence Taylor of Long Beach, California.  Both texts are widely relied upon by judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers.  In 1995, I became a founding member of The National College for DUI Defense, Inc. and have served on their Board of Regents since 1999.  During 2009-2010 I had the honor to serve as Dean of the College.  I have also served as chair or co-chair of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' DUI Committee since 1995. For more details about my background and experience as a Tennessee DUI attorney, you may view my resume / vitae.

I am also a frequent contributor to The Champion, the official publication of The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.  I am one of only a few lawyers in the nation who have been certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to administer the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.  I have also been trained as a Drug Recognition Evaluator and have taught thousands of lawyers on the Field Sobriety Tests and hundreds on the Drug Recognition Tests.

I have handled cases from the General Sessions Court (our lowest court in Tennessee) all the way to the Tennessee Supreme Court.  After my argument in a DUI case before the Tennessee Supreme Court, the Court unanimously dismissed the charge against my client.

I have been honored by many national rating systems for decades.  In 2004, Business Tennessee Magazine described me as:

"'Godfather statewide in the area of DUI.' With his treatise on DUI in Tennessee, which debuted in 1991 and has appeared annually since then, stays at the forefront of drunk driving defense in the state. Represents high-profile clients in Knoxville and across the eastern part of the country. 'Brilliant lawyer, great teacher.' Well-regarded trial attorney with 'professorial' demeanor. . ." Alexei Smirnov, Best Lawyers in Tennessee, Business Tennessee Magazine, p. 50 (January 2004).  I was also named Knoxville's 2013 Lawyer of the Year by the "Best Lawyers" organization in the area of Criminal Defense, Non-White-Collar Crime.  Moreover, "U.S. News and World Report" designated  Oberman & Rice as a "Tier 1 Best Law Firm" in Tennessee for DUI Defense and Criminal Defense.

Some of my other honors include: Receiving the highest rating from the renown Martindale-Hubbell™ and AVVO rating system; Named as a "Mid-South Super Lawyer," a "Top 100 Trial Lawyer" by the American Trial Lawyers Association, a "Best Lawyer in America" by a publication of the same name, and one of Knoxville CityView Magazine's "Top Attorneys."

Moreover, I have enjoyed my work as an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee Law School since 1993 and have received prestigious awards for my faculty contributions. One of my most enjoyable experiences, though, was teaching in 2019 as a Fulbright Scholar when I was a visiting professor at The University of Latvia in the capital city of Riga, Latvia (near Russia).  There I taught two classes: American Criminal Law and American Trial Advocacy.

I spend my "spare time" speaking at seminars throughout the United States on various topics relating to DUI defense. My audiences have included seminar attendees of the National College for DUI Defense, Inc., the American Bar Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. As of 2019, I have been honored to speak over 130 times to various bar associations, police training classes, judicial conferences and other seminars in more than 30 states and six foreign countries.  In 2002, I was honored to demonstrate cross-examination techniques and lecture at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia on the topic of courtroom testimony and in 2006, I was appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on DUI Laws in Tennessee and was elected Vice-Chair of the Committee by my peers.

I hope you will take the opportunity to contact me to discuss your case.  The chances of obtaining a successful result will increase dramatically if you obtain representation within a few days of your arrest.  DUI and other criminal charges can affect your career and your life—forever.  While I can never guarantee a result, you have my assurance that no one will give you or your case more attention.  Steve Oberman

EXCEPTIONAL ATTORNEY
Steve Oberman is the only attorney you want and need when charged with DUI and related criminal charges. He is very thorough, extremely knowledgeable, very straightforward and honest, and will go above and beyond to provide the best possible defense. He thinks outside the box but within the law to provide the best resolution now and in the future. Steve is, without a doubt, the best attorney and a compassionate human being. I highly recommend him – you will not regret it!

Oberman is the Only Attorney you Should Even Consider
Steve Oberman literally wrote the book on DUI Defense that all the other TN attorneys utilize as their playbook while defending DUI clients. He is the “DUI Godfather,” and is objectively *the* most bulletproof shield you could possibly obtain if you are charged with this crime. He is expensive, but you truly get what you pay for (and beyond, honestly). I consulted with Mr. Oberman after being charged with a 3rd offense DUI, after other local attorneys told me he was the best. I consider myself very lucky that he agreed to take on my ultra complicated case, because his time is limited and he is picky about the cases he accepts. He is a major perfectionist, and will not commit to anything unless he knows he can carry it out flawlessly. We spent a whole year working hand in hand, while he fought tooth and nail to obtain a favorable outcome for me. This man never takes any shortcuts and makes himself constantly available any time you need him for anything—including on weekends or when he’s out of the country! He leaves no stone unturned, and truly takes control of his cases with an iron fist. He is tough, but it’s because he is a bulldog and he is determined to get only the very best for his clients. Lastly, during my very darkest of hours while I was serving my (extremely short and miraculous) sentence—I was able to count on Oberman to rescue me on numerous occasions. It put me to tears, the sense of relief and security that he was able to provide me with. No other attorney could ever compare. When you hire Steve Oberman, you are hiring a personal protector that you will have a strong personal relationship with. Also, you are paying for his name…because it carries a ton of weight. From my personal experience, law enforcement officers do not mess with you once they find out you are Oberman’s client. They know better. I would also like to mention his legal assistant, Meghan Williams, who is a darling sweet lady that works just as diligently in her own capacity. She is very knowledgeable and always on point, which has guaranteed things to always run smoothly within that office. Oberman’s partners “AZ” and Sara Rice have also been a breath of fresh air (and they both have stepped in to assist in my case at times as well). The attorneys at Oberman and Rice have meetings each day where they all collaborate and contribute thoughts/ideas/suggestions for one another’s cases, so you are really getting a whole legal team any time you hire any of them! In conclusion, I would strongly suggest you give Steve Oberman a call immediately if you are charged with Driving Under the Influence. It’s critical that you obtain representation immediately, because there are steps he can take very early on that will greatly affect your outcome and future. Other lawyers may be cheaper, but they will treat you like just a number (I know because I’ve hired others in the past). Oberman will make you feel like you are his #1 and only priority. Give him a call.

Steve Oberman; Exceptional Lawyer and Human Being
Steve Oberman and his team came highly recommended to me when I found myself in an unexpected and serious legal situation. At the very first meeting, Steve laid out the intricacies of my case and all of the potential outcomes. Throughout the legal process, he was systematic in his approach, honest in his assessments and thorough with his work. He under-promised and over-delivered. Not once did he say "I will guarantee this" or "this is going to happen." Instead, he viewed my case through a legal lens with no personal bias. In the end, he delivered on his initial goals of where he thought he'd be able to help me and he achieved a desirable result. On a personal note, he showed genuine interest in me as a person, as opposed to just his client. After the case, he made personal calls to check on my health and wellness, as the case took a mental, physical, and emotional toll on me. I'd recommend him to my closest friends and family and I certainly recommend him to anyone who is in need of legal assistance. Steve is exceptional both as a person and a professional.

Helping Lead Youth to Maturity
Young people do not always make the best decisions or exercise prudent judgment. Such was the case for my son that found himself charged with DUI; a potentially detrimental start to adulthood. Steve not only helped him reach the absolute best outcome, he also was part of my son rising to a new level of maturity. Steve's patience, direction, and more importantly expertise in the legal arena is, in my opinion, without equal.

If at first you don't succeed try try again
I had all but lost hope in regaining my driving rights. Steve never waivered and kept on going for me until we got a favorable outcome. There were two states involved which complicated the issue. All communication and information was clear, transparent, concise and done in a very timely manner, I always knew exactly what was going on. Steve genuinely cares and that combined with his huge knowledge base and vast experience gave me the best possible outcome. He has the the right answers.

Steve Oberman is the best!
Mr. Oberman assisted me in a difficult case, and got me an extremely favorable outcome- well beyond my “best case scenario” hopes. Additionally he went above and beyond in talking me through the details of my case, and answering my many questions. Mr. Oberman left no stone unturned, and his efforts were very apparent. He was a steady hand during a trying time- I’m so grateful for his help and cannot recommend him highly enough!

Above and beyond
Quite frankly, words fail me in writing this review. Steve Oberman was able to achieve an outcome for me that I never would have thought possible. From my first contact with him, I knew I was in good hands. He was extremely detail oriented, knowledgeable, and patient in making sure I understood all of the details of my case. It was an extremely stressful time, and he was always honest with me regarding all of the possible outcomes. I have a hard time believing any other attorney could have provided me with as favorable an outcome as Steve Oberman achieved for me. I will never be able to thank him enough for all of his hard work on my behalf.

Knoxville's premier defense lawyer Steve Oberman is an honest man that will work hard for your best interest.
When searching on-line for representation, I located Steve Oberman. What caught my attention and set him aside from all the others was his depth of knowledge, years of experience, numerous accolades, and his passion to teach law in various schools. I called Steve’s office on a Sunday and left a message. Shortly after Steve called me back, we set up a meeting and he began to work. What I first noticed about Steve was his attention to the details with every question he asked and document he reviewed. Steve navigated through the legal system in a polished manner and made the journey though the case efficiently and extremely effective as the case was ultimately dismissed.

BEST SETTLEMENT
My wife and I were injured in a motorcycle accident when a woman pulled out in front of me. Although we did not collide with her car I lost control of my motorcycle braking because she pulled out and the bike went down. Other well known crash attorneys ( turn your wreck into a check) declined our case. Steve represented us and ended with a six figure settlement.
