Replied last December 13, 2017Hi Colin, Unfortunately, I cannot discuss the details of your case in a public forum without your authorization. If you are the individual I believe you are, I would love to respond candidly, because I know I fought for Colin, and I believed he was the best interest. Colin knows I fought for him. It is not unusual for cases to get continued in our legal system. I show up for court, and I showed up for Colin. What I don't understand is if I didn't get notice of a court date for a hearing set by the other attorney as you claim, how on earth am I supposed to know a hearing has been set on your case to tell you? That part of your review does not make sense to me, and it would not be proper for a judge to hear a case on those facts. You have to understand that there is a lot of bias against fathers in the family law system, which is not something I can change. All I can do is fight that imbalanced system on a case-by-case basis by sticking up for the dads I represent and arguing that they should be given equal dignity and consideration in a custody case. Sadly, they often are not due to biases inherent in the system. Colin, I would love to speak to you about your custody situation to see how you are doing. I sincerely hope you are doing well if you are who I think you are.

Replied last December 13, 2017Brian, thank you for your feedback. Assuming you were my client, I cannot give my candid response in a public setting without your authorization. Responding in general terms, I appreciate any payment you made, and I take the trust a client places in my firm very seriously. I always listen very carefully to any potential client concerning jurisdictional issues under the UCCJEA, and I do not take a case where I feel jurisdiction is proper in another state. Sometimes clients still want to pursue a case in a state that is not necessarily the best venue. I am always up front with a potential client about jurisdiction and venue issues, and I make very clear where I think a case should be heard when two states potentially have jurisdiction over the case. I take your criticism of "ignoring" you VERY SERIOUSLY. Your review is a valuable reminder to me of the importance of returning client calls, emails, or texts promptly, so I thank you for that. I strive to return my clients calls the same day. I constantly tell my staff to return client calls as well and over-communicate with the clients. I give clients my personal cell. I know of no other attorney in Columbus, Georgia that does this. I respond to texts if I cannot take the call, and I consistently respond to emails, even if only to say I will call later when I am out of court. If I only charged you $1,500.00, that is a very LOW fee for an attorney in a custody case. It sounds like you had a limited budget. I've heard horror stories about attorney's charging $10,000.00 to $30,000.00 in a custody case. That's just not who I am. I do not believe in depleting the marital estate by billing the client for insignificant busy work that doesn't move the ball. My goal is to either get the case settled quickly between the parties or get the client into court before the judge for some resolution. Unfortunately, in our family law system, that is not always possible. I strive to keep the case costs low. Brian, I would love to speak to you and talk about your case. Replied last December 13, 2017Hi Anonymous, If you were a client, I thank you for your feedback. I very much appreciate it. I take your feedback very seriously. I do care about my clients. I fight for them with all my heart. I prepare for court, make any legal and ethical argument I can, and present any admissible evidence I can gather or that the client gives me. Court is an unpredictable animal, but I do everything I can to tell my clients what they can expect, and what I have seen judges do in similar cases. Your statement that I did not return your calls, nor my staff is very concerning, and I take that feedback very seriously. I do give clients my cell, and I do respond to emails and texts. It is possible to text my office line, which goes to a general email. Sometimes, a text can slip by me, and I fear that may have been the situation here. If texting, it is best to use my cell. While I am a professional, I try to distinguish myself from the traditional notion of a stuffy, poindexter lawyer and instead try to relate to my clients in a down-to-earth way. I avoid using fancy latin phrases in court or legal writings, and I don't talk down to my clients. I try and make them laugh and see the glass as half-full, or give them a pep talk when I feel they need it. Sometimes that can come off as unprofessional to some people. I do not apologize for that. If you want a poindexter, robot lawyer, that is not me. Say what you will about me, but please do not diss my associates, paralegals, or secretaries. I value them and the work they do, and I do my best to give them guidance, pay them fairly, and ask them about their families. They work extremely hard for the clients, and I try to repeatedly instill in them the notion that we must treat them as we would want to be treated, over-communicate with the client, and never forget that while routine for us, the work we do may be the most important thing in their lives. I teach my team that the clients are the boss, and not me or some judge. Feel free to give me a call, if you truly were my client, you have my cell.
