The Lawyer Other Lawyers Respect

What I thought would be a relatively easy go with my now ex-wife turned into a protracted battle of everything. What should have been simple became contested. Thank goodness I decided to go with Emily Yu. She is the best. If you need an attorney that is laser focused on your needs and desires and ...doesn't push you in the direction they want, Emily is for you. She is compassionate, articulate and is not afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. I loved how quickly she responded to my questions either in email or on the phone. I especially loved how I never felt like she was over billing me. There is no other attorney I could recommend for a contested divorce. It's a guarantee that you spouse will not enjoy going up against her and opposing council will know they are in for a scrum. Emily is worth every one of your hard earned pennies.

I can't put into words what a blessing Emily was to work

I can't put into words what a blessing Emily was to work with during an extremely stressful time in my life. She was kind, patient and caring while at the same time she stayed professional and truly had my best interest at heart. She was very easy to talk with and answered all of my questions and con...cerns with genuine compassion. I knew she was the attorney I wanted from our initial conversation. She made a very scary time in my life go by a lot smother and I can't put into words how thankful I am for her.

Emily's wisdom and setting realistic expectations was an asset in navigating my divorce.

Emily's wisdom and setting realistic expectations was an asset in navigating my divorce. I truly appreciate that she honored my request to approach with grace. She always laid out the options and partnered on the pros/cons, along with the risks. I appreciate her hard work as she worked to ensure my i...nterests and needs were heard. She knew the right and best resources to engage.

military active duty who retired during seriously contested 2 year long divorce

Emily was open and honest about the amount it was going to cost and the time it would take to do a contested divorce. In the first conversation I ever had with her she told me it would probably cost $20-50K, and take maybe a year or longer. I was hoping for the lower end of each but it took 2 year...s and cost about $50K. There were 2 mediations, a GAL, police, CPS and many other crazy things that happened during the course of the 2 years, like COVID and all ZOOM meetings. I was active duty military and retired during the case which changed my income completely, my spouse was living in housing on the military base while I lived off base, but she had to move when I retired, both of my children have learning disabilitties and me and my spouse didn't agree on any aspects of their treatment, there were problems serving my spouse because of military base regulations, and every single decision from child custody to after school activities for the children was contested during the entire 2 years. I may be the neediest client Emily has ever had because of the constant disagreements me and my spouse had over every daily aspect of our children's lives. I went in to the divorce thinking I would be lucky to get partial, every other week end, custody of my children, that if I wanted to see them I would have to follow my spouse to a different state after my retirement and that I was going to give her all my money in child support and my retirement. I assumed she would take, or make me sell, all my assets. I ended up with 50% custody and tiebreaking authority in education and medical decisions. Because of the 50% custody she can't take my children out of Georgia. I am paying 34.5% of my retirement to my spouse for life, but that is something that is standard military stuff, I was with her on active duty for 15 years. We divided our marital assests equally and I didn't have to liquidate anything except my house in NY, which was expected going in. My case was rediculous, with details that I can't list. I sent her thousands of emails and thousands of pages of documents and asked her before every decision I made. She gave me sound advice and I paid for the advice. If you think you can have a lawyer at your call everyday for 2 years with constant contact for under $40,000 you are probably wrong. I would recommend Emily to anyone who is having a serious conflict with their spouse, just understand it's going to take money and time if you understand that going in you will be more pleased with the end result.

She is Amazing!!!

Emily is Amazing! She is very honest and considerate. Unlike most of the lawyers I have consulted with, she responds to me timely and always thinks a few steps ahead for me and my daughter. Emily is not the cheapest lawyer, but she DEFINITELY deserves every penny she charges! My husband has a history... of DV & alcohol abuse, and Emily came up with all the terms that are still protecting my daughter and me. My husband had to accomplish an anger management class and other therapies. Emily can be tough to the opposing attorney and be really gentle, willing-to-listen for you. The process involved many difficult decisions, and she was always willing to give me enough time to think. I highly commend Emily to whomever that is struggling like I was. She is always on your side and truly the best!

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
