SSRB

The Army changed its policy to review existing adverse information after a promotion board is convened. CID discovered domestic-related civilian reports from my past during their portion of the investigation. Even though I was never charged and declared a victim, these reports were still flagged, an...d my promotion was put on hold until the SSRB convened. I initially went to JAG for assistance with a rebuttal, but I didn't feel secure with the outcome. The rebuttal was too vague and it was their first time dealing with a situation like this. Because my career was in jeopardy, I decided to hire an attorney and discovered Matt Barry. I admired the fact that he was a former member of the military, was familiar with military law, and had assisted others in similar circumstances who achieved favorable outcomes. He made me feel at ease and went straight to work. Within days of receiving my documents, he had contacted my witnesses and drafted a statement. SSRBs can take up to 18 months, but mine only took eight, and my promotion to the next rank has been sustained. I have no clue what I would have done without Matt. Again, thank you for rescuing my career. 10/10 would recommend for similar situations.

GySgt of Marines, 20 years of service and about to retire

Attorney Barry is a hard professional who treats his client with dignity, respect, and compassion. He was locked in from the start and continued to pay attention to every detail, and he was ready to respond to anything and everything the prosecutor threw at us from the other end. This man had p...atience with me when I needed it most and was solid in his counsel throughout my adversities. I called five lawyers as soon as I received my legal notice for admin separation, and Attorney Barry responded promptly. The other lawyers called back a few days later. I am stressing this importance because when you get punched with a legal notice, your mind will be reeling, and you want solid counsel to lay out your options. This man is a consummate professional. He handled my situation with a firm hand even when circumstances were anything but clear. (hello, marine corps separation manual) When everything seems to be falling apart, you want a man who takes his job with the utmost seriousness and attention. The prosecutor threw curve balls, and Mr. Barry never lost his tact and positive demeanor. He examined everything and made notes on his black laptop (a ThinkPad that looks like a government computer). Attorney Barry prepared me for everything; he ensured I was cross-examined with my JAG lawyer. (make sure you get this practice, you will never be ready to be vilified in that room, but it helps to know what will happen.) As a GySgt who focused his life in the Marine Corps for the last 20 years, who made a mistake, took his NJP, had a retirement ceremony, and was suddenly yanked back from terminal leave to be put on admin separation board notice, I honestly thought my whole career as a Marine would be ripped out from me. I was less than two months from having 20 years in the marine corps, and the new CO, who didn't even know me, wanted to admin separate me before I hit my 20 year mark. My lawyer, Attorney Barry, worked and countered what the prosecutors threw at me, and I ended up with a grade and characterization determination board. A small win, but this new CO wanted to give me a reduction of rank and an other-than-honorable discharge. I came away with a positive result from that board and am incredibly grateful. This man saved my career. No fluff, just truth. My advice is don’t break the rules, but if you have already made a mistake and facing challenging times ahead, this man is one of the best defense lawyers for the military. Retiring GySgt USMC

Hard Work Lead to an Unlikely Victory

Mr. Barry was my lawyer while I was applying for a COVID vaccine religious accommodation. I was ignorant on the process of my case but he was very knowledgable and willing to explain to me all my questions. He was honest of the unlikelihood of a positive outcome for my case yet his hard work lead to ...my accommodation being approved ( which to me seemed unprecedented while comparing my case to the other accommodations the Army is approving.) He was also much more afforrable than I expected and I do not feel he took advantage and overcharged me

When The Odds Are Against You, Hire Matt Berry

Matthew Berry sets the standard for which all attorneys should strive to achieve.  After nine years of service I found myself facing a Board of Inquiry due to a referred OER I received while OIC during an exceptionally challenging assignment.  Prior to the board convening I also received a GOMO...R.  Matt researched and screened my witness list prior to the board date.  He spent a lot of time getting to know my witnesses, and determining how they may be best utilized to support my case.  His level of detail and preparation were second to none.  We met prior to the board day, and I went into the board knowing I was defended by the best attorney in the world.  Matt was the most prepared and experienced person in the room.  His thorough opening statement detailed the events in chronological order dating beyond three years prior (very important).  The day's events unfolded smoothly, and Matt delivered a powerful and compelling closing argument.  I was overjoyed and shocked when the board decided to retain me during less than 30 minutes of deliberation. Matt's down-to-earth honesty, experience, knowledge, and professionalism coupled with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills set him apart from all other attorneys.  Matt dedicates himself to each and every client in a way that makes them feel they are his ONLY client.  He prioritizes honest, meaningful communication, and provides regular updates.  Matt expertly represented me in two cases over the past 15 months, and I did not have to reach out to him once for an update.  Matt also embodies a very special and unique ability to put his clients at ease, even during some of the most stressful times of their lives.  I can't tell you how many times I got off the phone with Matt and felt more at ease, even when nothing within my case had changed.  Although hiring an attorney never comes with good circumstances, I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to have met and worked with Matt on my cases.  I witnessed first hand his innate ability to not only defend his clients, but more impressively, confidently and successfully navigate and dominate the unknowns of a Board of Inquiry.  I consistently, and without hesitation recommend Matt to subordinates, peers, and supervisors, and always receive positive feedback regarding their interactions with Matt.  When the odds are against you and your career is in jeopardy, hire Matthew Berry.

Outstanding Military Lawyer

I would highly recommend Attorney Matthew Barry for any military criminal or adverse administrative action matter. I was accused of misconduct by a former subordinate. The allegation was alleged to have occurred almost a decade prior. Unfortunately I didn’t discover Attorney Barry until my case was f...urther in the system and it wasn’t going in my favor. I had two other attorneys prior to hiring Attorney Barry. Both attorneys were professional, but lacked the knowledge and legal understanding for a case of my nature. This resulted in bad advice, which I never truly recovered. When I began looking for attorneys with the legal and administrative knowledge required for my case, I came across Attorney Barry’s webpage. His blogs and client testimonials were on point explaining happens at different points in the case, which did happen under my previous attorneys, both of whom didn’t know, but Attorney Barry also knew what was going to happen as the case progressed. I contacted Attorney Barry by phone and we spoke for about 30 minutes. I then decided to hire Attorney Barry. While my case worked itself out in the end and I retired with no grade reduction, full benefits, top secret (TS) clearance intact, and was hired for a civilian position that required a TS clearance. Attorney Barry had me positioned to make a strong legal case if required. I wish I had Attorney Barry from the very beginning of the accusation, I believe there is a possibility that case against me would have been closed very early in the process with a finding in my favor.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
