I worked with Evan Picus during a very difficult time after my wife passed away. He had previously assisted with the deed to our home and had also drafted both our wills. After her death, I contacted him for help understanding my legal rights. I was emotionally overwhelmed and trusted his advice, ...but I now realize I was never properly informed of my spousal rights — especially my right to an elective share of my wife’s estate. I was never given anything to sign, never waived that right, and was told to simply follow the will. As a result, I’ve carried the full financial burden of the property for over a decade, while being told I had no rights. I later found out this was not accurate. I’m not accusing anyone of criminal or unethical behavior — I’m simply sharing my experience and how the legal guidance I received left me in a worse position than I should have been.
