About William

Learn William’s areas of practice.

Practice areas
  1. Estate planning
I started doing wills as part of a general practice in 1980. Since 1999, trust-based planning has become a major focus of my practice.

    44 years

  2. Business
Business work began with incorporations, drafting business agreements, and dealing with business disputes. Since 2011, I have focused on business transition planning as a major focus of my practice.

    44 years

  3. Probate
Probate, trust settlements, guardianships, conservatorships, probate and trust litigation.

    40 years

  4. Mediation
Alternative dispute resolution work has included work as a mediator, facilitator and settlement counsel. My current focus is on designing ADR systems for trusts and businesses, and dispute avoidance and resolution for businesses, trusts and estates.

    27 years

I grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, as the oldest of ten kids.  I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970, then worked as a carpenter for a number of years before starting law school.

After receiving a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1980, I engaged in a general practice of law, with an emphasis on litigation, especially business and construction litigation.   In 1997, after years of frustration in trying to get cases to settle sooner, I obtained a mediator certification, and wrote articles for two national publications about the settlement counsel technique.

In 1998, I learned about the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, and a different approach to helping clients achieve their lifelong goals.  Since then, my practice has focused on helping clients with their estate planning and business transition planning, while at the same time helping them avoiding costly and acrimonious disputes.

William F. Coyne, Jr. -- Our attorney and a person of integrity
Bill Coyne is a unique attorney in that he always seems to have time if we have questions or need his advice. He is intelligent and so patient about explaining all the details of the sometimes very confusing areas of the law that we need explained to us. Bill is a person of true integrity -- such a rare trait. We have complete trust in what he tells us and does on our behalf. We know we are in good hands. It's a very safe feeling.
