Raleigh is one of a few cities purpose-built as a state capital. In 1788, a state convention begin searching for a more central location for the state government. Eventually, the convention decided to purchase land owned by an early settler of the region, Joel Lane.

One thousand acres were purchased for the new city. In 1792, Raleigh was founded as the state capitol of North Carolina. The pre-designed nature of the city led to some to call it "a city of streets without houses," but Raleigh would eventually grow to become a major city.
