I presume you are reading this because you are charged with something and that you are looking for "the lawyer" who can do the best for you. Please keep reading. You will learn from my story as I was here on this site reading the reviews to pick "the best lawyer" not too long ago. I am a permanent resident of the US and I have a good background/education with a good job. I was charged with a misdemeanor theft, which jeopardized my future, specifically my US citizenship, the idea of starting a family (I was planning to bring my fiancé from overseas after becoming a citizen), and my career (obtaining a security clearance). So, I had to find the best lawyer to get me out of this trouble.
While I was beating up myself for being in this position, I immediately started looking for the lawyer. In the meantime, I received a number of letters from lawyers to my address advising me to hire them. They must have checked the police records to figure out that I needed a lawyer. Among those, I picked one. Additionally, I picked 3 other lawyers on this site based on the reviews and their ratings. So, I had total of 4 lawyers to meet with. I started seeing them one by one. The first lawyer I met had a limited experience. She said no matter what she would do I would be found guilty and that the only way that would give me a better chance would be during the appeal. So, she basically asked me to pay her so that she would escort me to the court until the appeal. The other lawyer was a former prosecutor. He said he wouldn't be able to do anything to save me and that the prosecutors would never be convinced to amend the charge even if I did hundreds of hours of voluntary community service. I was hopeless and sleepless for days. I had to find that lawyer that would give me relief from this pain. The last lawyer I saw before I met Jon had 30 years of experience who practiced not only criminal law but also immigration law. This sounded very convenient as I would need both. He told me some of the similar cases he dealt with. I was about to hire him. I went ahead and asked him a few questions about my immigration status and its potential impact by this charge. Based on his answers, I figured that he didn't know some of the key facts (admitting arrests on form N-445) on immigration law. So, I gave up on him.
Jon was the last lawyer I met with. As soon as I explained him the situation, he wrote me the prescription. Not to reveal his magic, I will briefly mention. The prescription included a voluntary community service, psychological evaluation, and letters from the immigration and security clearance lawyers for the potential ramifications in case I would be found guilty. These all would help Jon convince the prosecutor to amend the charge if not totally drop it. One of the best things of hiring Jon is that he already has the contacts to make them available for you. We were able to obtain all the letters along with the psychological evaluation. I know psychological evaluation sounds scary. However, the psychologist Jon referred me to was such a great person, he made it all very easy. I also did over 100 hours of voluntary community service.
During the court day, Jon was alert and totally in control. He went ahead and talked to the prosecutor even before the witness showed up. He convinced the prosecutor not to prosecute! What a life changing moment. Thank you Jon! Thank you the "Dream Team", the psychologist, the immigration and the security clearance lawyers, and Jon's great staff!
So, after all, my advice to those who are looking for the best lawyer: Hire Jon if you want your lawyer to fight for you till the very end. I have no doubt he will do the best for you. With all due respect, my advice to other lawyers with limited abilities: Go intern with Jon in his office. It doesn't matter for how long you have been practicing. I promise you will learn a lot from him!
My experience with Jon and his staff was wonderful. I highly recommend him for anyone who requires legal representation. From our very first meeting, I was blown away by his vast knowledge of and his experience with criminal law. What impressed me even more was his matter-of-fact way of communicating. In my limited experience with lawyers, I have found that good lawyers can sometimes be a bit pretentious. But Jon was neither pretentious nor was he just good. He was personable and he was the BEST!
At first I was certain that I would be charged, found guilty, and quite possibly be going to jail for my felony gun charge. But Jon worked with me, the judge, the prosecutor and the arresting officer and I couldn’t be more satisfied with my case’s outcome. Jon Katz is THE ONLY criminal defense lawyer you want representing you if you are in the greater DC area. I was once on this site looking for a lawyer too and if you are lucky enough to be reading this post, then look no further because John Katz is most certainly head and shoulders above the rest.
Thanks Jon, You really KFA!!!
Mr. Katz represented me for a DUI. He performed very well and litigated my case for a very favorable outcome. Anyone that finds themselves in a similar situation as me, I would recommend Mr. Katz in a heart beat. I am very pleased with the outcome of my case.
I found jon katz online I rad some of his reviews they convence me to get him to represent me.he is a great dui defense lawyer he did am amazing job with my case he convence the judge to get me everything I wanted. I highly recomend jon he does not desopoint.
Jon is a wonderful person and an excellent lawyer. My case was very complicated and the county in which I was charged with a first time DUI does NOT usually plead down to reckless (just for reference - there was someone with a 0.07 BAC earlier this year that was still convicted of a DUI in court!!!). I was obviously very concerned about how getting convicted would impact my future. Jon was very supportive through the entire process and worked very hard on my case. He consulted other lawyers and also worked with an expert who wrote a letter on my behalf stating the breathalyzer results were faulty (based on many different factors including the machine not being calibrated accurately - the calibration records were obtained by Jon). He was able to plead down to a reckless, which was a miracle!!! And I was very grateful to have someone so hardworking on my team. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone convicted of a DUI. He is more expensive than other lawyers in the area, but he makes the impossible happen!! So it is definitely worth it in my opinion.
When I first met Jon I was in a terrible shape, I was just arrested for DWI and spent the night in jail straight after which I found Jon's name on this website and he made time to meet with me the same day. The moment I walked into his office he validated my feelings and got straight to work - with a great sense of humor nonetheless. I will admit the day of court was hectic and crazy and he did not have the time to dumb down the legal vernacular which I found stressful but he told me to trust him and I did. THANK GOD I DID! The outcome of my case was beyond what I expected and I still don't know how he did it. Not that I expect I will ever need a criminal defense attorney again but I never thought I'd need one before and wish I'd had his contact info when I decided to get behind the wheel after a couple drinks. Bottom line things happen and I will carry his info every where I go because no one can afford to not have an attorney.
He helped me all the way , knowledgeable , very high sense of humor to lighten the mood , everyone likes him , the judges and the prosecutors , when i got my DUI all my friends referred to me a lot of lawyers but i found MR. Jon here on avvo , i met him and then i hired him on the spot never regret my decision , very good man and amazing lawyer , and the surprise after he is done with my case he sent me a check with a part of his fees as a refund and he said because he didn't feel that he spent much time as he was expected on my case because we accepted the deal before the trial date , For me it is not about the money but it shows how much he is honest and a good man .
Really thank you mr . Jon for your effort i appreciate it .
I hired Jon back in May when I was charged with a DUI/DWI. Without getting too specific, Jon pointed out a couple glaring mistakes that the officers made during the rest and was able to get my potential DUI/DWI charge reduced to a "wet reckless" avoiding a lengthy license suspension and DUI/DWI on my record. After meeting with Jon I knew immediately he was the man for the job. He put all the potential outcomes on the table but told he was confident he could negotiate with the prosecutor and get me a reduced charge. Not only that but he was straightforward, honest, and more than fair with his fee. He made me feel very comfortable throughout the process. If you have a similar legal issue I would highly recommend Jon to defend you.
In December 2013, I got in car accident (no one else was involved) and was arrested for DUI. I’m only 22 and had never been in trouble with the law so I was extremely scared. My father and I immediately began to search for a lawyer. During this search it was extremely disappointing because most of the places I had contacted made me feel as if I was just another client. I understand lawyers are busy but many of the law firms I checked out, it was almost impossible to get in contact with the lawyer. But instead was only dealing with their assistants. After coming across Jon’s information I decided to meet him in person. Within the first couple of minutes, I was convinced he was the lawyer for me.
I am very happy I made that decision. Jon was able to make a plea bargain with the prosecutor, to reduce the DUI charge to reckless driving. Instead of having 1 year with restricted licenses, Jon was able to get it down to 6 months. He was not only able to get the time reduced but also was able to have it changed to where I could drive to/from work, basketball games, grocery shopping, church, and run earrings for my grandparents. This was such a good deal; my probation officer was so shock the judge would allow all of these exemptions. Jon has truly mastered the art of being just aggressive enough to get what he want without coming off as disrespectful. I also believe his great reputation within the DMW area helps as well. If you are looking for a lawyer who truly cares about your well-being and is not money hungry, look no more. Jon is very hands on with his cases and is reachable early in the mornings until VERY late at nights. His commitment and expertise is worth way more than he charges. If you wish you had a close relative in the business, you can’t get much closer than this. If you are reading this thank you Jon Katz AND your awesome team for everything!!!!!!
To make a long story short, I had an almost unwinnable case (admitted to having drank, accident, breath over .15), 2 previous alcohol related charges in college (dismissed, but still), AND I was arrested for drunk in public between court dates for this DUI case... My case went to trial, I was found Not Guilty, and the case was dismissed. To be fair, we got lucky and had a lot of things go our way, but you partly make your own luck, and Jon's preparedness, experience and fight directly led to a lot of ours. He got a plea deal, with no jail time, a restricted license, and my drunk in public dismissed (pretty fantastic outcome). However, Jon was always on the lookout for any inch extra we could gain, and after he found the breath tech didn't show up, we scrapped that plan and plead not guilty. He kept me informed the entire time, kept the expert witness we had informed and in the loop, and made me feel comfortable and kept things lighthearted with well timed jokes the whole time. Jon had his office staff submit papers to the prosecutors office saying they had to give us notice if they wanted it continued, b/c of the expert witness, and that made the judge deny the prosecutors request to continue again. During the trial, he was prepared, kept me informed, and had a punch and counter-punch for everything, making the prosecutor look completely unprepared. After the verdict, he was almost as happy as I was! He genuinely loves helping and fighting for his clients. I would recommend Jon to anyone. He is expensive, and because he does so much high level work, things below DUI are not very cost effective, just because of his lost opportunity cost if he took them. However, he was very helpful in providing help and ideas for my other case, and recommending several other very high quality lawyers. Overall, the best lawyer I could have hoped for, and got the best outcome I could have hoped for. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
