While in his second year of law school, Juan interned at the District of Columbia Superior Court Senior Judges’ Chambers where he was exposed to criminal, probate, and landlord/tenant issues. During the summer of 2007, between his second and third year of law school, Juan clerked at a small boutique civil law firm in Miami, where he concentrated on civil procedure, and personal injury matters. In Juan’s final year of law school he assisted a prominent Washington, D.C. criminal defense attorney where he was first exposed to criminal defense in the Federal courts. During his final year of law school Juan also worked as a student-attorney at the American University Washington College of Law’s General Practice Clinic where he was exposed to family, bankruptcy, and labor law issues.
Immediately after graduating from law school in 2008, Juan began working as an Assistant Public Defender at the Palm Beach County Public Defenders Office. At the Public Defenders Office Juan defended hundreds of individuals, juveniles and adults, charged with misdemeanors and felonies. Additionally, as an Assistant Public Defender Juan participated in over 60 trials, specifically, over 30 jury trials, and over 30 non-jury trials. Of the over 30 jury trials Juan participated in, he was personally in charge of over 20 of them, and of the over 30 non-jury trials, Juan was personally in charge of all of them.
Juan’s trial skills were further honed when he attended the National Criminal Defense College (NCDC) in Macon, Georgia. At NCDC, Juan and several other lawyers from across the country partook in an intensive two week training seminar with a nationally recognized faculty of judges, law professors, and criminal defense lawyers. Juan and his group members practiced jury selection, direct and cross examination, impeachment and closing arguments regularly.
