Mrs. Peters has been a real blessing during such a stressful anxiety ridden stage in my life. I had two previous attorneys that can’t hold a candle to Laurie and her abilities. I’m a single mother of two and found myself heartbroken with my children gone. I found Mrs. Laurie Peters on a site called Avvo. I was immediately interested in her because she seemed very kind and she also seemed to know her stuff and was very professional. I retained her after firing my old lawyer.... I was in a custody battle for my children, which was also a move away case (across country) which, from what I’ve heard, makes this type of case even more difficult. Not only that, but my old lawyer royally messed things up and said it was completely impossible. No one thought it was fixable but Mrs. Peters said she thinks she can do it, but its going to be very, VERY difficult but of course cant make any promises. She worked very, very hard and knew every single detail in my case. Even the small details!! I was so surprised about how much she paid attention and studied my case. I was about to get evicted from my apt and was looking at being homeless. I was given a notice to pay or move but did not have the full amount at that moment. I tried to reason with the landlord but they would not budge. I think because I had been late before and my dog became an issue as well, t...hey just wanted me out. I was then served with more court documents and given a court date of Feb. 5, 2015. I finally had the money to pay the rent in full but the landlord would not accept it. The last day to pay had come and gone, so it was too late. I was really worried and scared thinking I would have to begin living in my car. What made it worse is that I have two teenage girls in school and what about them, how are we going to deal with homelessness. What made matters even worse for me was being disabled from a work injury, which is what got me into this position to begin with. On Feb. 4, 2015, the day before my hearing, I decided I had better try to get an appointment with an attorney for a consultation to see if there was anything I could do. Maybe the paperwork was wrong and I could get some extra time. That's all I really wanted, extra time that would allow me to pay the rent. After calling a few attorneys I was having no luck. Some said they couldn't help, it was too late, others said they could possibly help but were too busy to set aside any time for me. One attorney told me it was going to cost a lot and could not guarantee any results. It was late in the day (past 5 pm) and I decided to try one more number. I called an attorney in Camarillo and he couldn't help but gave me a few attorneys he trusted and felt could do something for me, even at this late date. So I called one of the referrals, Laurie Peters. By now it was 5:45 pm, and surprisingly she answered the phone. She was kind and seemed genuinely interested in my story and case. Ms. Peters gave me an appointment for the next morning, the same day the case was to be heard in court. I felt better but still concerned that all this effort would not make a difference, but I also had nothing to lose. I went to see Ms. Peters and we spoke. She looked at my paperwork and said that based on what she read my chances are not good and I would more than likely lose the case because I missed the last day to pay my rent in full and therefore had no real defense. I was devastated to hear that kind of news from an attorney who knows s how this works. But, she said let me talk to their counsel and see if I can negotiate a settlement of some kind to keep you in the apt. She also said you understand that may mean not only would I have to pay the rent and late fees, but also the attorneys fees which could be as much as $1,800.00. I told her I understood, but that was better than being homeless. She called him while I was in the office, but he was not available. With that, I thanked her and was ready to leave, but not before she said she would try again or hopefully he'd call back. She did say, in her opinion I would have to appear in court, and to be ready for the outcome, in case she could not reach the attorney. She also said if that was the case I should go to court early to try and talk to him 'before' we went in front of the judge. Once the judge got involved, I would surely lose and have an eviction on my record and no one would want to rent to me again. I finally left the office and within a couple hours, Ms. Peters called me back to tell me she did in fact speak to the other attorney and had worked out a settlement in my favor. I could not believe what she was telling me. All I would have to pay is the one month past due rent plus late fees, that's it, no attorneys fees what-so-ever! I began to cry listening to her tell me the good news. I don't know what she said to get him to agree, all I do know is that god blessed me with her at this time in my life when I needed a savior and Ms. Peters did definitely make my day and my kids day too. I thank god for her.
