    23 years

I founded The Coopersmith Law Firm nearly a decade ago, after substantial experience as a business litigator in San Diego, and after service as a military prosecutor in the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps.

My firm has grown substantially in that time. We represent businesses and individuals with business interests at all stages of litigation, and advise clients on methods to avoid and minimize the risk of litigation. Strategic, straightforward, efficient, and effective, we understand and listen to the needs of our clients - a skill often forgotten in the modern business world.

Our primary practice is business and corporate litigation, including partnership and corporate disputes, executive-level employment matters, financial fraud, and fine art dispute matters. We also handle select public interest and municipal matters based on merit and importance.

The firm holds an "AV-Preeminent" Peer Review rating from the Martindale-Hubbell International Law Directory, and has been listed since 2014 in the Bar Register of Pre-Eminent Lawyers. We hold a "Superb" rating from the "Avvo" Legal Directory.

I was chosen as one of the San Diego Daily Transcript's "Top Attorneys" in the area of Corporate Litigation for 2012, 2013, and 2014, as a "Top Lawyer" in the San Diego Magazine each year since 2013, and as a San Diego Super Lawyer each year since 2014.

In 2017 and 2018, I had the honor of being selected as one of 50 Top Influential Business Leaders in San Diego by the San Diego Daily Transcript.

I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1996.

Representing both plaintiffs and defendants, the firm provides clear-thinking and intelligent advice to a wide range of clients, and offers the quality of much larger firms for a cost-effective price.

Excellent Firm
I hired the Coopersmith Law Firm to assist me with an employment dispute. Everyone was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and had great communication with me throughout the entire process. I was referred to this law firm by a friend, who they helped with an employment dispute, and she raved about their services. She was right. I would recommend Steve Coopersmith, Philippa Grumbley and this firm to anyone who needs assistance with these issues. They also resolved my matter in a timely fashion.

Exceptional Experience from start to finish
Steven Coopersmith represented me on an employment matter. I was very impressed with his knowledge and expertise from the first time I consulted with him, and was extremely pleased with his incredible work throughout the entire process. Steven exceeded my expectations, was always approachable in terms of answering my questions and made it a priority to stay in communication with me throughout all steps of my stressful situation. He is truly remarkable - an outstanding attorney who I 100.10% recommend to anyone seeking a reputable lawyer who really knows their stuff, has the utmost pride in their work, and will do everything possible to get you results.

Excellent Advocate for His Clients
It was a pleasure working with Steve and his team. He is caring, responsive and an excellent negotiator. He represented me on an executive issue with outstanding results. He was also sensitive to the costs issues. As a nonprofit executive, this was very important for me. I highly recommend Steve and his team.

Outstanding!
A most positive experience. I presented him with a rather involved legal matter and he took time to fully understand the situation and suggest possible ways of dealing with it. His approach was caring and supportive. It's obvious he has a wealth of experience and a practical perspective toward dealing with challenging matters. Ch, Lt Col (CA) David H.

Brilliant, hard-working, and really knows how to negotiate complex legal issues at a reasonable price.
Steve agreed to take on a minority shareholder grievance against the principles. This is the little guys taking on a nefarious giant. He not only had to develop a winning strategy but he also had to get all of the minority shareholders in the lawsuit to not only agree to the strategy, but also to stay on point and not wander from the core objectives ( no small task ) . He collected and reviewed huge volumes of documents, synthesized the elements, and developed a winning strategy. His attention to detail was very impressive. Then he had to explain it all to us, which he did expertly. The net result is that we recovered all of our initial investment at a very reasonable price, without going to trial. This was an amazing outcome and certainly a lot more than I expected at the onset of the lawsuit. He has a talented staff that was delightful to work with. I have worked with many attorneys in the last 4 decades and he is clearly one of the best. Thank you Steve for protecting my interests and recovering my money.

Best lawyer ever!
I'm no stranger to lawsuits. I've sued people, I've been sued, I have testified in both civil and criminal trials as an expert witness, and I have never seen anyone so effective as Mr. Coopersmith. He works with you closely, gives you good advice and is very responsive to emails and phone calls. I can't recommend him highly enough. I engaged him for a lawsuit that I thought was a lost cause and he got all of my money back plus five other people who joined me in the lawsuit.

Critical thinker, decisive action, and genuine approach
As a frustrated tenant, I had the good fortune of discovering The Coopersmith Law Firm. I brought Steve Coopersmith many emotions about my dispute with an unreasonable and condensing landlord as well as layman presumptions about what could be done legally. Steve very quickly absorbed mounds of information, assessed my situation, and knew I had cause. He also tempered my expectations, which garnered my immediate respect and full confidence. Steve showed a vast knowledge of tenant-landlord law, an impressive ability to critically think, and articulated a decisive direction with the end in mind – which was not court. In the end, Steve and his Firm showed a keen ability to argue my side as well as aggressively negotiate a favorable settlement – and he did it very quickly. Perhaps most importantly, even with a heavy caseload, Steve, from the very first day, made me feel like my dispute was a priority and that the entire firm was dedicated to resolving it. The Firm’s response time was consistently impressive. I would also like to thank Alanna Whittington, who masterfully handled my landlord during my post-move out inspection.

Outstanding litigator
Steve Coopersmith is an attorney who not knows the law but understands risk management. His attention to detail and tenacity while facing my opponent's counsel was phenomenal. I was very nervous going into my case but after seeing Steve in action I seriously didn't think of it again. He's tough and really knows how to defend you. My grandfather always said, "if you want to fight a giant, you need to be a giant". Well Steve is a giant; I knew at the end of this, whatever the details of my negotiations, that I was well represented. I can't say enough about him. I highly recommend him and I know you will be in good hands with him in your corner. If you're reading this and you're up against him- well- good luck.
