I can’t recommend Rory (Roderick) enough. He was always professional and guided me and my wife through this entire ordeal. I’ll briefly explain my case. My wife and I took in my twin nephews when my sister and her husband loss them to CPS. We were not prepared to take them. In retrospect we should ha...ve let them go into the foster care system but we were trying to do what we thought was right at the time. After all, who wants their nephews to go into foster care? We thought it would be short term, 1 month tops. 9months later we were still taking care of my twin nephews, my wife was 6 months pregnant, and we had 2 kids of our own. Overwhelmed is an understatement. I had a bathing accident with one of them severely injuring him. This is where an already hectic and difficult year went from bad to worse. We were arrested and charged with felony child abuse. The cops and the social workers painted us in the worse way. Instead of an uncle and aunty trying to care for nephews the reports filed made it look like we were unrelated foster parents looking to cash checks. Not to brag, but I’m a union electrician so we didn’t need the money. We weren’t rich but we were doing just fine financially before we took my nephews in. The foster care money didn’t even cover the extra cost it took to care for them. My wife and I were just doing our best for what we thought was the right thing to do. Like I said we know now that foster care system was probably a better choice because we were not equipped to take on this challenge, even if our love for my nephews inspired us to. And so at the end of 2019 our case began. In 2020 the COVID Pandemic extended the duration of our case which was frustrating but Rory did his best to temper our anxiety. He let us know it was a process and it would take time but more time would favor a better outcome. So, even though we wanted the whole situation to just be over and done with, he gave us enough perspective and patience to know that we would be okay. We found out later that one of the DAs had been pursuing the maximum penalty which was 6 years in prison. This ridiculous idea would have crushed our spirits and heightened our anxiety to the point where it would have been difficult to live our lives normally. Rory made the apt decision to not inform us, recognizing how ridiculous the idea was and that it wasn’t worth piling on to our already high stress load. Fortunately our case was passed to another more level headed DA and we were none the wiser at the time. It’s decisions like that that differentiate a great lawyer from just a competent one. Rory was responsive and communicative but I appreciate that he didn’t over communicate, leaving me out of the loop until the case was moving forward and I needed to know. You need to remember that court system is slow and painful so you need a lawyer who can help you remain patient yet confident in their ability. You need someone who will alleviate your stress as much as possible, temper your expectations, while also giving you enough hope and confidence to live your life as normally as possible. In the end I took a plea deal with 88 days house arrest and 4 years probation, no jail time. Still a harsh penalty in my opinion, especially for my wife, and Rory let me know we had a sufficient case to fight but we were just ready to move on with our lives.
