Biography
Christian Cooper graduated with honors from the University of Southern California in 1998 with a degree in Spanish and international relations. Prior to attending Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, he produced and edited on-air features and the websites for two nationally syndicated public radio shows, was involved in the launch of (now the top-rated Spanish-language website in the country) and was a writer and editor for the Recording Academy, which produces the Grammy Awards and Latin Grammys.
Christian was the president of Loyola’s gay/straight alliance and competed in the first-ever National Sexual Orientation Moot Court Competition at UCLA. While at Loyola, he clerked at the HIV & AIDS Legal Services Alliance, Lambda Legal, the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office.
After graduating from Loyola, he accepted a research fellowship at the Williams Institute, a think tank on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy at the UCLA School of Law. While there, he conducted a multilingual study of HIV discrimination in dental care in Los Angeles County and compiled data from throughout the country on employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
After completing his fellowship at the Williams Institute, he moved to San Francisco, where he quickly involved himself in San Francisco politics by serving as treasurer for a candidate for the Board of Supervisors. Christian practiced law with one of the top criminal defense attorneys in the city, appearing in courts throughout the Bay Area.
In 2010, responding to the economic meltdown, Christian switched his focus to working with homeowners facing foreclosure, and others impacted by the economic collapse. He currently practices bankruptcy law, working with debtors to get a fresh start in their finances, and, where possible, help homeowners behind on their mortgages work out being able to stay in their homes.
