At 19 years old, I made a very stupid decision while working a government job. I was cooperative with law enforcement and was let go the day I was caught/interviewed. I left that job, became a mother at 20 years old and completely turned my life around. Almost 2 years after my crime, when my daughter... was around 3 months old, I received my summons in the mail for court. I was being charged with a Class 2 Felony for what I did when I was 19. My whole world came crashing down. I was terrified to have my baby ripped away from me, or be separated from her and have to go to prison. I had no priors, never been suspended from school, I didn't even have any speeding tickets. A mitigated sentence for a Class 2 Felony is 3 years, I couldn't be separated from my child that long. Mr. Horan put together a beautiful mitigation book for me, it included all of my health issues and childhood trauma that could play a role in my decision making. It also included several character letters that family/friends wrote for me. This book was sent to the prosecutor to attempt to lower my charges. Mr. Horan also spent a great deal of time negotiating and building a dialogue with the prosecutor assigned to my case. In the end, Mr. Horan was able to get my Class 2 Felony dropped to a Class 6 Felony, probation only with no jail or prison time. He was even able to get the name of the charge adjusted to look better, and even the state suggested no jail time. I was sentenced to 18 months probation, and only 30 hours of community service. I could not be more appreciative of Mr. Horan and his staff. Ms Brisa is the sweetest, and she was always helpful if Mr. Horan was not available.
