At 19 years old, I made a very stupid decision while working a government job. I was cooperative with law enforcement and was let go the day I was caught/interviewed. I left that job, became a mother at 20 years old and completely turned my life around. Almost 2 years after my crime, when my daughter was around 3 months old, I received my summons in the mail for court. I was being charged with a Class 2 Felony for what I did when I was 19. My whole world came crashing down. I was terrified to have my baby ripped away from me, or be separated from her and have to go to prison. I had no priors, never been suspended from school, I didn't even have any speeding tickets. A mitigated sentence for a Class 2 Felony is 3 years, I couldn't be separated from my child that long. When we met with Mr. Horan he listened to every detail of my case, he answered all of our questions, he was extremely informative, and he insisted that he would give us his best shot but that he made no promises. My first court date I was terrified and anxious, I had never been in a courtroom before. Mr. Horan took his time to explain every detail of how the court day would go, and he assured me several times that he was going to fight for me. At my arraignment the state tried to take me into custody on a $10k bond and I'd only be released with electronic monitoring. Mr. Horan got me out of that courtroom simply released to pre-trial services with no electronic monitoring. Throughout the months of my case, Mr Horan checked on how I was doing, kept me updated as soon as he got new information, and he even represented me at my court dates so I did not have to attend court. Mr. Horan put together a beautiful mitigation book for me, it included all of my health issues and childhood trauma that could play a role in my decision making. It also included several character letters that family/friends wrote for me. This book was sent to the prosecutor to attempt to lower my charges. Mr. Horan also spent a great deal of time negotiating and building a dialogue with the prosecutor assigned to my case. In the end, Mr. Horan was able to get my Class 2 Felony dropped to a Class 6 Felony, probation only with no jail or prison time. He was even able to get the name of the charge adjusted to look better, and even the state suggested no jail time. I was sentenced to 18 months probation, and only 30 hours of community service. I could not be more appreciative of Mr. Horan and his staff. Ms Brisa is the sweetest, and she was always helpful if Mr. Horan was not available. Mr. Horan stood by me every step of my case, he even accompanied me to probation the couple times I needed to go. Mr. Horan is not just a lawyer in my eyes, he kept my child and I together when the likelihood was high that we weren't going to be. He encouraged me and kept my spirits high when I saw no hope. I hired this attorney for felony 2 case and liked him from the beginning because he is no-nonsense. You are NOT getting a used-car-salesmen-like attorney which I despise so much. Instead, AD is direct, knowledgeable, hands-on and shows up on time and looking sharp. This was not an easy case but he used his expertise and skill to work towards the best possible outcome. He took a lot of the stress out of a difficult time and I trusted him 100%. This could have meant 3 to 12 years in prison but he got us a much lesser charge, probation only, no incarceration time.
