I am a founding partner with Broxterman Alicks McFarlane specializing in high conflict cases, non-traditional families (including same-sex couples), international and Hague cases, parenting time and decision-making disputes, and cases involving complex financial issues. I became a lawyer after clerking for the Honorable James C. Klein in Boulder County District Court, an experience which was invaluable to my development as an attorney. I have also worked on cases with complex financial issues including trusts, venture capital and pre-IPO investments, pensions, retirement and stock accounts, and buyouts of business ownership interests. Before law school, I worked as a legal assistant in the Antitrust Department of the international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom assisting with large-scale mergers being investigated by the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, and the European Commission. During law school, I worked for the international trade law firm of Neville Peterson and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, both located in Washington, D.C.

I hired Heather Broxterman due to an unfortunate situation. My wife had moved out and taken our young daughter with her. After a few weeks it became apparent my wife was not going to allow me to see our daughter. It was a very helpless and enotional experience. After contacting Heather I knew immediately that she was extremely professional and knowledgeable on my situation. She clearly explained my rights and the process that was needed for me to be able to have parenting time with our daughter. But more importantly she listened to everything about my particular issues. I was not just "another client". She was invested in my divorce case and her performance reflected it. With my wife making the process as difficult as possible, Heather knew exactly what to do and when to do it. However, she always explained the situation to me and allowed me to make the decision. Her paralegals were always prompt to respond to my questions and were helpful throughout the process. Divorce is an extremely difficult situation for everyone involved. But having someone as talented, assertive, and professional as Mrs. Broxterman in your corner helps immensely. When our court date came she did excellent and got me exactly what I requested, and what was fair. I have her to thank for finally being able to be with my daughter. I will be recommending her services to everyone I know, and if you are in a difficult separation I would highly recommend you contact her sooner than later!

Heather and her team were able to expedite the dismissal of the family law case that was unnecessary and had no legal basis, but was clearly an attempt to disrupt our family life. Heather's knowledge of family law and the best way to expedite the matter was essential in this dismissal and we are very grateful that we were able to conclude this matter quickly. Heather was mindful of our budget and worked efficiently in order to be frugal and we are sure we hired the right lawyer!! This is the second time Heather has represented us, and we are grateful to have her as our counsel, and if we ever require representation again, we will be knocking on her door again!

Hiring Ms. Broxterman to represent me during my difficult divorce has been the smartest decision I ever made. After a six month struggle with no temporary maintenance from my soon to be ex-wife, Ms. Broxterman appeared with me in court to fight for what was fair. She handled herself with confidence and poise, presenting my case truthfully and honestly. To say it was an epic battle against a shady and vicious opposing counsel is an understatement. Not only did Ms. Broxterman convince the judge to rule in my favor, but we were awarded everything we asked for and everything I deserved. I have never felt such joyous relief! I know Ms. Broxterman truly has only my best interest at heart. She is nothing like the majority of attorneys who only take a case to line their own pockets. She took my case to help me and to fight for what is fair and right. I am so grateful Ms. Broxterman is on my side and not my wife's because she is a force to be reckoned with! Heather Broxterman is an expert in family law. She efficiently navigated the challenges of my case with integrity and care. In my experience finding an advocate to help navigate the challenges that come with a contested parental responsibility case is no small task given what is at stake. It is a terrifying time and I couldn't imagine a better professional to help keep a steady focus through the most turbulent of times. Heather was always available throughout my case and prepared in court. Her ability to decipher my goals and provide direction and focus to help me hone in on the most important tasks and attitudes to attain them could only come from a deep compassion and desire to help. She always had resources to pull from to get things moving in a positive direction. Heather Broxterman and Margot were my lawyers for a divorce that had multiple motions. During my case their professional and timely interaction put me at ease in a very difficult time. Heather was great to work with! I met with a few lawyers and she by far was the most personable. Above all I trusted, and she proved, she cared about what was best for my child. She was not driven by making money from my case, she wanted a good result. She also listened to all my input and allowed me to organize my facts, which was so important to my A type personality. If you are looking for a lawyer in a situation where a compromise should be easy to find, Heather is the one!

My experience working with Heather Broxterman and BAM Family Law was nothing short of exceptional! I was referred to this practice by an acquaintance who raved about them. My case was seeking, as an alienated parent, a fair custody arrangement with an incredibly challenging co-parent. I am so thankful for the referral as it was likely the saving grace to the entire case. I ended up in the BAM office after working with and hitting a wall with another lawyer first. I found myself 5 months and nearly $22,000 into litigation and it seemed as though we were headed for total disaster. The first attorney was argumentative, fairly out of touch, overly expensive, and presented a very bleak outcome as if I didn't have a shot at a victory. Suffice it to say, I needed and deserved a better option, the stakes were just too high. I met with Heather Broxterman and Margot Alicks of BAM Family Law as well as with a different law firm that came highly recommended. The choice to hire Heather was crystal clear. Heather, Margot, their respective paralegals, and the rest of the staff there works seamlessly together. The synergy of this team was very impressive. In fact, in trial as well as during other times throughout litigation this team took a very dynamic duo type approach. Almost a “good cop / bad cop” type of strategy that covered all bases and was quite effective. My case was solid and it was obvious that the missing link was having the right representation. With trial just around the corner the transition in representation was smooth to this Firm’s credit. The team took over, was very efficient, communicative, fair with billing, and an absolute pleasure to work with. No settlement could be reached with the other side, trial was messy, and there was even a ridiculous appeal after the initial ruling. In total the litigation went on for the better part of a year. I liken this experience to trudging through mud. Despite the challenges our outcome was excellent! I basically got exactly what I had petitioned the court for on all levels. I can't imagine a life without my daughter or for a sweet child to be fatherless for no good reason. That was, however, a possible outcome and I am eternally grateful that I found Heather Broxterman and her fantastic team! I highly recommend Heather to anyone needing a great family law attorney! I had brought Heather a unique divorce case in May of 2014, as my case involved a same-sex Civil Union and started in the midst of the same-sex marriage law changes in Colorado (and eventually, the Supreme Court). In my first consultation, Heather carefully listened to my situation and was immediately able to explain what kind of case we had, what statues we fell under and explained the best possible way to proceed with the case. Not only was she knowledgeable about family law in general, but she had the most up to date information regarding same-sex relationships and rights - and she knew how to use that information effectively. My case expanded from a same-sex dissolution case to a juvenile maternity case (we had to prove that I was a legal parent to my child). From day one, Heather never changed course in what we were trying to accomplish and always used the law to her advantage. We won the maternity case, and eventually had a very fair ruling in the dissolution case (no one really "wins" in a divorce). I can honestly say that the successful outcome was because of her dedication to my case (I always felt like a priority), her knowledge of the law, and her passion for fairness. I would recommend Heather, her team, and Gutterman Griffiths to anyone who is going through a family crisis and needs legal help. Furthermore, I wouldn't look anywhere else if you're involved in a same-sex case. Although there has been progress in regards to same-sex marriage, there are still so many loopholes that need to be worked through, and Heather knows how to do that.
