Jake is hands down the best attorney in Austin!!

I have been in the court system for 3 years and worked with several attorneys. I have never had an attorney so dedicated to fighting for me and my children. From custody issues to child support enforcement - Jake has worked tirelessly on my behalf. He is truly committed to his clients and his passion... and work ethic are unparalleled. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing legal council. My children and I would be lost without him.

Fair, Honest, and Straight Forward Attorney

My husband and I have spent a fortune with multiple attorneys in the last year or so dealing with our ex's, from my ex's filing an appeal over unreimbursed medical to his ex taking us to court every chance she can. I have to say "Jake" Gilbreath was the best. He is fair, honest, straight forward a...nd always kept me informed. He did everything he said he was going to do and I feel like he did a step more. I never felt ignored or that my case wasn't a priority like did with other attorneys I'd worked with. I'd use him again in a heartbeat and mostly likely will need to. I'd recommend him to anyone of my friends and family. You really can not do wrong with hiring him to represent you.

A Bright Guardian Angel

I was introduced to Jake through another guardian angel that God put on my path. My previous lawyer was not doing a very good job and I felt she was not fighting for me enough. I could feel and tell she did not take my case to her heart. Money was running out very fast and temporary order was not e...ven entered yet. I needed child support and I was also worried money would be gone soon and eventually she would just take the money and drop the case. Although she was not doing much the opposite side was even worse to make the divorce keep on going, they wouldn't cooperate with her, much less make sure the drug test was done on time and child support paid. I had to pay her to do the draft for the temporary order so it could be entered and child support be enforced and that was something the opposite side was ordered by the judge to do but for their convenience never did until Jake came to the picture. When I shopped around I chose Jake and had him dismiss her for me. I was one of these people that believed the more experience the better. She had over 25 years of experience but did not fight like Jake did, not even close. The amount of work done when Jake took my case was tremendously ridiculous for the amount I had paid already but that does not mean I did not appreciate her effort and work. God bless her for the good intentions. At first I was unsure about Jake. He is so young. But hey that was the right and the best choice I made and I don't regret for a second. Don't understimate this young attorney he DOES know the law and he will fight for you. He is so dedicated. Jake has a great heart, is very calm but he can be agressive in court when it is necessary. He DID so much for me and my little one. I know in my heart he did cared for my case and he worked real hard to protect us. He got out of my divorce the best of my interest and the best for my son. A master piece!! He is a genious. He is very very good at responding emails. He won't blow you off. What I like the most in his professional manners is that the fact he would explain everything as many times as I needed to understand no matter how ignorant I am when it comes down to law and legal terms. If your case has nasty ingredients like mine had. Abuse of all levels, drug addiction, domestic violence, cheating, sex addiction,.... I would recommend Jake in a heart beat. He understands domestic violence and the dynamic of it very well. He knows how to deal with the opposite side when there is drug abuse involved and the safety of your child. He is very good in deposition he will catch lies and contradictions very fast. He will build your case the best way it can be done. He won't waste his time, your time or EVEN your money. Trust me he saved me tons of money that I do not even have. He made sure I spent only on necessary legal tools like the deposition that strongly helped my case. He advised me about all my options during the divorce so I could be aware and make an informed decision. This was not offered to me before with my previous lawyer. Jake got a lot of my respect just for that. If I had to do this again and I hope I don't. I would choose Jake for sure. If it wasn't for him this divorce would be still dragging to this year 2011. My divorce was final on the anniversary of the last assault 12/20/2010. Exactly a year after my ex decided to raise his hand to me one more time and I decided that was the last time he would ever do this to me. This divorce means a healing process, a closure for myself,a sense of peace, a new start and hope of a promissing future ahead for Ryan and I. Thank you, Jake from the bottom of my heart for everything you done for us. God bless you.

Child support issue

My ex-husband hired this law firm and they are representing him. While others may have had positive experiences, my experience was frustrating. This law firm is representing my ex-husband who had an existing child support order but did not make payments, requiring me to pursue enforcement thr...ough the court. On the day of the hearing, just before the judge entered, my ex paid the full amount owed online through the OAG system. By that point, I had already incurred approximately $3,000 in legal fees to enforce a clear court-ordered obligation. Given that my ex paid child support minutes before the judge walked into the court room, she asked what the purpose of the hearing was and my ex- husband’s attorney said it was to discuss the legal fees associated with with the child support enforcement. If my ex would’ve paid child support, we wouldn’t have needed this hearing and thus a discussion over legal fees wouldn’t have been needed. It is disappointing that the matter was not resolved earlier by his attorney at this law firm as the hearing ultimately served NO purpose. From my perspective, the only party who appeared to benefit from this process was the law firm.

Unresponsive and Neglectful Attorney

I hired James "Jake" Gilbreath to assist me with a child support matter. At the outset of the matter, he communicated with by email and would (slowly) respond to my questions. We needed a court hearing to obtain a modification in my situation. It took Jake over 6 months to set up the very basic h...earing, and that was with many requests for updates on the status on my part. These status requests were either ignored or responded to by his paralegal with "I'll let you know what I hear." When the hearing date finally arrived, the judge decided to discuss the matter informally with the attorneys and said she would hear the matter on a formal basis in six months. That was 5 months ago. Since that time, all of my attempts to contact Jake and/or his legal assistant have gone completely unanswered. Neither one will return my telephone calls, email messages, messages left with the office receptionist, or letters sent by certified mail. I believe the small matter was not lucrative enough for Jake to spend any additional time on it, so he apparently decided to simply stop working on my case. He has not communicated to me, however, that he has ceased to be my attorney. He has also not responded to my written requests for my file so that I could hire someone else to complete the work. It is an entirely unprofessional situation. I would never recommend using Jake Gilbreath for any family law matter or for any other legal purpose. You will not get prompt attention to your matter and you may get ignored entirely.

I am very sorry this client had this experience. I disagree with most of what is written here, except for the comment about setting up a hearing. This client was set for a hearing, and unfortunately my father passed the day before the hearing was scheduled. The client was promptly informed, and we had reset the hearing. I do apologize that that happened, and I know it can often be frustrating when there are delays in cases. I am afraid a lot of what written is very inaccurate, but I absolutely understand this client's right to express dissatisfaction. This particular client filed a complaint with the bar. The complaint was dismissed. I wish this client did not feel the way she did, but I will take her comments, even those I disagree with, and use them to become a better lawyer for other clients. If this client wishes to contact me to discuss, she is of course more than welcome to.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?

  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
