I'm originally from Alabama and grew up in Dothan, Alabama where I graduated high school from Dothan High in 1979. After high school, I attended Jacksonville State University where I graduated in 1983 with a degree in Law Enforcement and a minor in English. While attending JSU, I interned with the Calhoun County District Attorney's Office in Anniston, Alabama. After graduating, I married Diane Morgan who graduated with me. We moved to Texas where I accepted a job as a police officer with the Mesquite Police Department and my wife as a R.N. with Baylor University of Medical Center. At Mesquite P.D. I served as a patrol officer, a member of the SWAT team, and was a detective in the Criminal Investigations my last 3 years. I left Mesquite P.D. in 1989 to attend law school at South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas where I graduated in 1991. While there, I was on the Dean's List several semesters and recieved the American Jurisprudence Award for having the highest grade in my class in Criminal Procedure. While there, I interned at the Calhoun County District Attorney's Office. After law school, I worked for the Dallas County District Attorney's Office where I prosecuted all types of cases from DWI to Murder. I've been in private practice concentrating primarily on DWI defense and criminal defense. I've been interviewed several times by the media, both locally and nationally. I have lectured frequently to other attorneys on multiple subjects including jury selection, cross examination, and DWI blood testing. The last 3 years I have been voted in the top 5 of Dallas County DWI attorneys as recognized by my peers. I'm a member of the Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association, and a founding member DUI Defense Lawyer's Association. I am Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Less than 10 percent of lawyers in Texas are board certified in their area, and only approximately 842 are board certified in Criminal Law. I have been married since 1983 and I have 2 daughters, one a junior at the University of Texas and the other a senior at the First Baptist Academy in Dallas. In my spare time, I enjoy the outdoors fishing and hunting and playing with all my rescue pets, 3 dogs, 2 Labrador Retrievers and 1 Blue Heeler. Judges, prosecutors, and other attorneys frequently refer me clients because of my reputation.

John Cook represented me on my DWI case. He was able to help me during this stressful life event. It was stress free process for me due to his many years of of experience. An attorney you can trust. 10 out of 10 recommended.

I used John Cook to defend me on a DWI charge. My long time professional career would have been over if John had not taken my case. He got my DWI reduced to a lesser charge. He was easy to contact when I had questions and kept me up to date and informed about my case.

Definitely a great lawyer;... Would highly recommend him to anyone with out double thinking it
"I can't say enough good things about John. First, his depth of experience gives him a huge advantage in court. A former police officer and prosecutor, he can instantly call out BS when he sees it. He's one of the most capable lawyers I know. Second, there's nobody who puts more genuine care and effort into a client's cases. John immediately gets juries on his side. He's skilled at exposing weakness on the stand. He's one lawyer I'd always stop and watch if I saw him in trial just to try to learn a few new things. Great great lawyer!"
"A super tough lawyer with a heart of gold! I worked with John on a jury trial that ended up with a directed verdict in favor of our client. Case results were so fantastic that the case received acclaim across the United States, Europe, and Mexico! Everyone is so proud to known this great lawyer. The best without question! Cameron Gray, Attorney"
"John Cook is in the top tier of DUI lawyers in Texas as well as in the entire country. I was introduced to him by another well know DUI lawyer and since getting to know John he continues to amaze me with his courtroom and jury picking abilities. You can't go wrong hiring this man."
"John Cook is a great warrior for those facing charges in Texas. He is a top-notch DWI attorney who can expose the weaknesses in any officer's testimony. While the DFW area is fortunate to have such a good attorney in this area, he will travel wherever he is called to defend his clients."
"I endorse this lawyer. John Cook used one of my ALR transcripts to conduct the most grueling cross-examination that I have ever witnessed in a DWI trial, performing a “textbook demonstration” of a technique known as “looping”, which I still discuss at seminars to this day. It amounted to a “drawing and quartering” of a particularly deserving officer who seemed to testify according to the adage that the jury will favor the witness who provides the best entertainment, regardless of the truth. John showed that ALR transcripts can head-off testimony that consists largely of “DWI’s Greatest Hits”. John has taught the art of cross-examination at our DWI Defense Project Seminar. As a former police officer, he knows all of their tricks."
"John Cook is brilliant; his middle name is Milton, like Milton Friedman, the most brilliant economist America ever produced; or John Milton, the guy who wrote Paradise Lost. Thus, it is probably not a coincidence that John Cook minored in English. But it is his practical experience as a police officer for many years, depriving people of their civil liberties, and as a county prosecutor, depriving citizens of their freedom, that gave John Cook that edge and education. Once he moved from the Dark Side to the cause of the Republic, fighting for truth and justice for those in north Texas wise enough to choose him as their counsel, John Cook applied his experience working for those in government who seek to deprive us of our Constitutional rights and our God given natural rights to fight to restore those rights to those among us who have fallen afoul of government agents. Put another way, John Cook knows his stuff and achieves great results because he is a master of the legal trade."
"I met John in 2013 in court, and observed John's tenacious ability in trial. I left the courtroom and went back to the office and put John's # in my contact list because John Cook is a winner that cares about is clients. I strongly endorse this lawyer."
"John is one of the best DWI defense attorneys in Texas. He is the guy that the police and judges call when they get arrested. I have referred several clients to him over the years including a family member."
"I endorse this lawyer. I first met John when I was a police officer in Mesquite, Texas. He was a mentor then and has continued to be a mentor today. I have contacted him on a number of issues related to dwi in Texas and have referred a number of people to him. My clients have always been pleased with the service he provided."
